Physically attacking the NYPD would not succeed in making them less violent toward protesters -- quite the opposite would occur. And in so doing, the retired marine very well could have gotten himself killed. You may enjoy daydreaming about an action movie-type scenario and outcome, but the Occupy movements draw strength from their non-violence. If they were otherwise, they would have been quashed the moment they began, and hardly anyone would have heard of them.

Yeah--I know. But there really is no "vestigial area" to our bodies--no place where we can shoot and it'd be safe. The foot would be a better idea, but 1) it's easier to miss 2) it's easier for someone to fight through a foot-wound. But yeah--I wasn't meaning to say that shooting someone in the leg would be "safe," just "safer."

I stand neutral. You make some good points, but even though he didn't stop some of the bad things the cops did, speaking out is still more honorable than walking away. At least he did something, even though he could have done a lot more. And being in uniform while doing it put him at risk of violating the UCMJ depending on interpretations of allowed political involvement. As a veteran, he would also be charged far stricter than a civilian if he had assaulted the cops (maybe that deterred him).

Sorry man, but the point of the occupation is to do it in a non violent way even if being harmed by authorities. This brave Marine was in the right all along and said what needed to be said to these cops who did look nervous around him and didn't have any room to speak on behalf of their guilt.
