I just read "Horse Soldiers" about the Special Forces guys who led the way with the Northern Alliance against the Taliban. It seems in quite a few instances dusty, woozy atmospheric conditions simply made it impossible for their laser designators to work properly. Does it sometimes get just too smoky and dusty to get much use out of the beam?

In this instance, the pilot was firing unguided weapons on a laser spot that he could see in his NVG's rather than unleashing a homing hellfire, right?

Excuse the total noob question but can someone explain what the gunner sees when the laser is used to spot like that? Does he see the entire ray tracing to the target, or just what it is pointed at?

The pilot sees exactly what you see here on this video. The spotter can choose from several techniques. He can "rope" the target which would be like a lasso or he could "snake"the target which is like a figure eight. Also friendly positions are usually marked with an IR strobe as to prevent the pilot from thinking the lazer is pointing toward the friendlies as opposed to away from them.

if you have FLIR or a set of NVGs then yes, you can see it. it emits a beam of infrared light, the chopper sees it and attacks where they shine the spotlight. most iraqis dont have night vision capabilities so they have no idea theyre being target until its too late. friendlies are marked by blinking IR strobes to keep air support from attacking them accidently as well.
