Denis O'Dell has a very fond and poignant memory of the "Hey Jude" promo video. Said he, "You can see my young son standing behind Ringo in the 'Hey Jude' clip. He died of cancer the following week, but he was so happy at that moment."
(Cushley J, et. al., "The Beatles: 10 Years That Shook the World," Mojo Press, 2004)
The Beatles had a way of making people feel that way, didn't they?
@mlucifersam choose which version is not that I like 2 (the David Frost had already seen enough):
versions that I like are: the PV version and the version of the Smothers Brothers Show that it passed from other points of view and record other people who are not the same as David Frost's show are scenes ... I love, from the minute 3:28
can not be that for 3 TV shows, Paul McCartney used the same clothes and the same grimaces! ......
but still difficult for me to choose one of two versions = S
can you imagine what those people must feel today? i mean all the crowd, 40 years later with youtube, they can show this video and say to their children and grand children "look, it's me there around the greatest band ever singing the legendary hey jude with them " :) how would you feel? they're lucky
the PV version is the best in my opinion, you can see paul's emotion, his beautiful eyes and the great moment between him and john 2:04-2:18
also the scream in this version are the best especially when he yelled "take a load of annie" also the funny old man at the end :) the emotion in this one is incredible, look at ringo at 4:14 and paul's singing "yeah yeah yeah" is amazing at 4:49 so PV version win :)
@xxChiQuiTitaxx73 yes indeed! agree with you. notice also in this version as Paul grimaces when he misses covering words "your shoulder" revealing vocal recording they are singing over live... (2:46)
@xxChiQuiTitaxx73 also I think the lovely moment at 2:04 you refer to has to do with the recording they are singing over and whether they can hear it, perhaps that it is leaking and they are hearing it, and not to worry about it... John seems to indicate to Paul something about hearing it, or is not worrying about hearing it. It looks like that anyway...
@giles422 i forgot to mention goerge incredible beauty at 5:22 and 5:35 john's great move at 5:10 and his lovely smile 6:23 and paul's miming so great at 5:25 so cute and his fantastic scream "yeaaaaaaaah" at 6:28 :) ringo's smile and joy 5:02
and to finish this great shot at 7:11 from the crowd around them :) well actuall ther's so many things to say, it's a moving moment and a great song in history, the PV version is in my heart :)
The lady in the white pants suit and the short, Mia Farrow haircut next to Paul always cracks me up. She looks completely drunk and her clapping and singing is completely out of synch with everyone else's.
@GizziesGirl2 Hey, I'm a totally straight guy, but I am very much with you on this here....... I think this is one of the most (if not THE most) sexy looking Paul vids from his time in The Beatles, on one of his best EVER songs !
Brilliant Youtube video mlucifer - EXCELLENT JOB !! Thank You.
The promo film was filmed in 12 takes, but the 4 videos are from the same day, place, year, etc.; Only different angles and takes were used on the video, and the singing was live (in some combined with the vocal of the studio take), others the instruments are also live, etc. These are 4 variations of the promo of Hey Jude with live vocals, combined in some with live instruments, or the actual studio take voices or instruments.
They are singing live! The musicians union would not allow miming of the song.Go figure? They instrumental tracks are pre-recorded. The main singing is live.
@mlucifersam very true, for almost all the Beatles TV appearences or promos, they filmed themsleves ahead of time and sent it to Tv stations, it would be impossible or time consuming to always travel around the world to every tv show who wanted them
2 takes of the band miming and Paul singing over the original vocal. Wonder if it was the first or second one that the short haired red headed girl slipped while trying to get up next to Paul and the dude helped her up.
@mrfreakyinastar LOL at your joke but actuelly I think it's 4 takes of lyp-syncing right? He's not performing the song 4 different times i think? Idk I could be wrong
Er, no one MADE me watch it - I was curious to see what it looked like and (it seems) had the audacity to view it. Thats all. Sorry about that.
I left a comment which youtube allows (good or bad) as long as it isn't offensive - something to do with freedom of speech and being entitled to an opinion but I may be wrong...
Incidentally, HIWAX (great guy by the way) emailed to say he's not planning any more in the near future so no need for me to stock up on the Paracetomol...
Thank you for your trouble of putting up these different versions of the recording of the song. You did great. Also, seeing many people being so close to the Beatles (and filming) is a rarity. Just standing so close to a Beatle is a great gift. Those who were there during filming of this event (who are still here) must have unforgettable memories they will always cherish.
All the verisons, except for the Anthology version, is original. The PV version is the one that we know best; The David Frost version i a completely different take from the PV version; and the Smothers Brothers version is no different from the PV version until it gets to 4:46.
It was a different 'take' - Michael Lindsay-Hogg filmed twelve takes of this video on September 4, 1968, until Paul eventually decided that it was enough. The final, PV version is made up of many different takes. The Anthology version has previously unreleased footage, apart from the other versions.
If only you could buy a ticket back through time. It looks like it would have been a blast standing there singing and clapping along with the greatest band in history. If such a ticket could be bought, I wonder what someone would pay for it?
Or how about a ticket back to see Hendrix at Monterey? Or the Doors at the Whiskey? Elvis on Sullivan? I wonder how many that were fortunate enough to be there at those times appreciated the fact that they were witnessing history.
If you could go back to any moment in Beatles history-what moment would you choose? 1) The Quarrymen at the Church Fete 2) The Beatles at the Kaiserkeller in Hamburg 3) Beatles at the Cavern 4) Beatles at the Royal Command Performance 5) Beatles on Ed Sullivan 6) Filming A Hard Day's Night 7) At Shea Stadium 8) Filming All You Need Is Love 9) Filming Hey Jude 10) Fliming Give Peace a Chance 11) Let It Be rooftop concert 12) Recording Free As A Bird I think I'd choose the Kaiserkeller in Hambg.
So whats the deal here? Why is there 4 different versions of this with the 4 of them in the same clothes and practically the same position they sit in for all 4 of them?
A great one for the trainspotters like me! Appreciated seeing all the edits viewed together. In Lewisohn's Complete Beatles Chronicle, it is deduced that there were at least three takes taped; with this A:B:C:D comparison, it's clear, especially during the audience shots.
Pity that they're all NTSC: PAL was in use by then, but only on BBC2 and this was on LWT/ITV, remaining B&W until Nov. '69: on Anthology, George sounded dismayed when Frost told him it was not going out in colour (in the UK).
Fantastic! Truly excellent! Thank you, Mlucifersam, for understanding art and taking the the time & care to put this together. I especially like the fact you didn't junkt this video up with super-imposed logos or any other type of advertising.
♥♪♥♪Hey Jude is probably the most amazing song in my life. I've never heard such wonderful melody of Paul's voice, and the instrumentation is phenomenal. Just watching 4 different versions of this song is just 4 times the amazement! ♪♥♪♥
Fantastic job! Absolutely fantastic! I love the Anthology version best. I like the way everybody was rushing behind Paul and his facial expression at the end, "better, better, better...Ahhhh"
It was really great. Nothing better then the Beatles other then the Beatles X's four
the David Frost version is a different take, and probably that was assembled first, and then they realized it wasn't very good (the crowd comes in before the big climax of the first half??), so they changed it for the Smothers Bros. it looks like they took that version and tweaked it for Anthology, which they did with many of the videos for that show.
my question is -- what is the "PV" version? what does PV stand for?
The promo vid. was also the one that people remembered seeing, the most, for many years afterwards until the anthology series in 1995. (At least I did, because I didn't get to see either the David Frost or Smothers Brothers version until I saw on youtube).
OMG! I knew it! I thought I was the only one that noticed this, I never knew there was a video about it. I had 2 videos of Hey Jude on my iPod because one was High Quality and the other one was not high quality. I noticed in the begging of the videos, Paul was smiling and in the other one he wasn't. Can someone explain to me why they are different, was it all one video with different camera shots or did they play this song more than once, but if they did how did they get the same people in it?
If you take a closer look not all the same people are in it for the audience participation parts (the only 5 I'm sure are the same is the woman in the white dress standing next to Paul, the kid w/ the glasses standing next to Ringo, the blonde chick to immediate right of George and the black guy who is standing {although in 2 of vids. he starts out sitting} to the left of John. Yes, it had to be refilmed. & in Smothers Brothers version there is a bobby (Brit cop) that's not in any of others.
Why are there different versions? They look almost the same. And Paul is not shouting the same thing as you can hear in some of them. How did you do the audio?
I have to comment how I LOVE the 4 screen idea as it shows how different videos or airing show different angles or clips than others, when others could care less, except for those of us who notice small things like that. I LOVE IT!! PERFECT. Some are RARE angles and so on...yet its something hard to find.
I feel sorry for that woman wearing white at 3:30 in the lower right version who looks like she got pulled up by her armpits onto the stage.

I have to comment how I LOVE the 4 screen idea as it shows how different videos or airing show different angles or clips than others, when others could care less, except for those of us who notice small things like that. I LOVE IT!! PERFECT. Some are RARE angles and so on...yet its something hard to find.
