By the way (if anyone wants to know), Minny was 23-39--7 in 75-76 (not much to celebrate). The team leaving Minny is a prime example of a greedy pig owner not getting want he wanted so he moves the club. Just 6 short years later they won a Coupe-De-Stanley for Dallas. That's sad considering the fans of Minnesota supported the club for 25+ years.
The Stars' green uniforms of this era are almost identical to the current Winnipeg Jets home uniforms. (Save for the colors.) Another thing to note is this is one of the few existing pieces of footage of the Scouts actually playing a game.
Kansas City is a good mid-western town like St. Louis and Chicago. They deserve another shot at the NHL. Sadly, with Betteman being obsessed with the idea of hockey in the desert, on beaches, and in swamps, it's never going to happen in KC again. He can't wait to put a team in Las Vegas. The Scouts never even had an owner. How can a team succeed without a proper owner? I'm not saying there should be expansion, but some of these southern or desert teams with poor attendance could move to KC.
@Mainsail76 May be it's could to be Phoenix? I'm still sad what Quebec lose Nordiques. If Winnipeg have the team now. Need to do the same for Quebec. As for KS I have doubts about Nashville and Colambus future. Even Panthers have't so many popularity. Btw LA Kings never was team with good profit. Today Islanders by my view going to close there. All can happens especially after red line remove.))))
@Mainsail76 I'd like to agree with you but I just cannot. Kansas City at best is a small market town and it just doesn't have a large enough population with the money enough to support a hockey club. It would also have to compete for sports dollars against The Chiefs (there die-hard fans) and The Royals (who havn't been good since the mid 80's). Plus with the proximity to St. Louis, Kansas City would never make it.
Kansas City (not including Topeka, Lawrence, Omaha, Des Moines) 2,035,335
Columbus- 1,836,536
Raleigh NC-1,749,525
Nashville- 1,589,934
Buffalo- 1,203,997
St. Louis- 2,812,896 (comparable only slightly bigger)
There wouldn't be competition with the Chiefs who play once a week for only 16 weeks. There would be zero competition with the Royals since their seasons would barely overlap. St. Louis is on the other side of the state, it's a five hour plus drive between the two.
@Mainsail76 When I say compete with other clubs I mean for sports dollars, not when each frachise plays. For example, if one can afford $300 a year to see a sportsteam, They are more likely going to spend it on The KC Chiefs or Royals than the new hockey club. Hockey has few roots in the direct area and times are challenging even for established clubs in certain markets.
@5inthehole This will be my last post on this subject since I don't want to hijack this comment section on this topic. Since the 1960's, there has been a hockey presence in KC. The only exception to this was in the 80's. Whether CHL, NHL, IHL, or UHL, there has been hockey in the city. That's more than a "few roots." The sports dollar issue is bogus. You assume that a hockey fan is also a football and baseball fan. I've not been to a Chiefs/Royals game in years.
@Mainsail76 It should be your last argument because your on the loosing end. To try to imply that KC in any way has an established hockey presents is ludicrous unless your talking about you and a bunch of your buddies playing at the local rink on a saturday night. In case you forget, The NHL tried it once already with The Scouts-what that last, 3-4 years? A-AA hockey is not NHL hockey...those cost 10-15 bucks to get it. NHL is 60-100 bucks..It will never happen. KC had its chance
@5inthehole To say Kansas City is "at best small market" is a bit strange. Granted, it's not Chicago, and in the world of sports it is considered small market, but to say "at best" makes no sense. KC has NFL, MLB, MLS, a major speedway that host two Nascar events a year, not to mention a CHL franchise, and a Independent League baseball team. Add to that major NCAA programs at Kansas, K-State, and Missouri, and I think this region can more than handle the NHL.
@SRBnaVRB agree the wild is lame name...should go back to the north stars name and uniforms...but I think that Quebec and Hartford deserve their teams back first. Bettman was determined to move all of the so called "small Market" teams to big TV market cities...if he could have he would have moved Calgary and Edmonton as well. I dont like Bettma but In the end he dances to the NHL owners tune...he works for them...and the greedy owners wanted more tv revenue and transfer fees...
I knew Steve Jensen very well when I was younger, I went to his hockey camp in Minnesota for a few consecutive years and he made an effort to be really close to his the campers
What a suck team they were. Ceasur Maniago would have been a good goalie if he wasn't shell shocked his first 5 years. After that he was seeing 3 pucks at once. Tim Young started out looking good but fizzled out. Bill Goldsworthy had 2-3 good years then went bust. The rest were "common" cards in every Topps hockey set. Or shall I say "fillers", those cards you use to make noise in you bike wheels.
Never made it to the Met Center but I heard that it had the best ice in the league. I wish the Stars and the Wild would trade names. When it comes to Minnesota it should be North Stars and nothing else.
@DonkeypunchKSH Cause it costs at least one months salary to drive and park at the Garden. I hope the Islanders don't leave but it ain't looking good.
Tom Reid was a solid defenseman who was forced to retire when he developed a condition that would become known as "gunk'...it was a severe skin reaction to the dye in the uniform...I remember reading in Sports Illustrated that he couldn't sleep in bed because puss and fluid would ooze from his rash and he would become stuck to the blankets and sheets.
watching the NHL in 70's is like watching today in slo-mo...athletes and action soooo much better today...and a hell of a lot less empty seats...to be honest, most sports "golden years" they didn't draw anywhere near what they do today...
Except for the part that hockey has been almost completly destroyed in the last 20years. Im guessing your favorite players were and are guys like peter forsberg, cindy crosby, pavel daysuk, etc etc etc. The passion is what mades those days great, its gone now, the buildings now have no soul.
I don't know about the crowds, but the game was far superior in the old days. Now it's watered down, players are over protected (what's next facemasks?) ... give me a break ... this is REAL HOCKEY
70s hockey wasn't watered down then? Do you think we'll see teams win 60 games while others only win 15 anymore? There were six great teams and the rest either were mediocre or sucked. Parity wasn't the name of the game back then. A lot were expansion but it didn't stop the Sabres or Islanders from excelling so it was a bad excuse.
Being a kid and going to those games at the Old Met..kind of makes me smile...I'm glad I got a chance to go there and see what my dad saw, and what all those people saw for years. What a great team, a great place, and why did they tear it down?

Based on the scoreboard, I'd say this game was Wednesday, January 28, 1976, a 9-3 win in Bloomington for the North Stars. This would of made it Ed Bush's first game as Scouts head coach, a week after Bep Guidolin resigned. The Scouts only won one more game the rest of the season (predictably, against the Capitals).
