I am 23 years old and this is one of his songs that calmed me when I was a baby, now I am using it for my children. This is a timeless classic. George Winston Radio on Pandora works wonders for my children.
i'm a metal head, im really into the heavy stuff with lots of moshing, which is why my friends were surprised to find out that i LOVE this album. but who couldn't? its soo amazing. the intro is especially haunting, it brings me back to my youth when autumn was a time of no worries, and games. thank you george winston for making this amazing piece :)
This song is as beautiful as... well... ARRRGGGHHH!!! ITS SO BEAUTIFUL I CANT COMPARE IT TO ANYTHING!! (sigh) JB's voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard compared to this. (HA! I compared it to something!!)
Someone once said; "You discipline your kid, or I will"... I just kept screaming and crying, and Dad ended up beating that guy up pretty bad... I was just a kid, and it was kinda scary for me to see that, yet... Dad, you Rock!
This reminds me of the time I got lost in the woods at dark withouth a flashlight. For a while, I thought I would be spending a creepy, sleepless night in the woods, but then I found the highway.
Oh but the title fits. The descending note riffs at the beginning really remind of a forest on an overcast morning with its thick, old tree trunks and crazy webs of branches that create a mysterious canopy over way above you. He does a fantastic job evoking images of his titles with the melodies.
I met George Winston about 15 years ago while I was working at Wake Forest University. It was at about 4:00 in the morning. What a nice guy. God bless you, George.
This tune makes me think of people past. Regrets. Hollow feeling in the middle of the night when all the world is asleep. Walking down leaf-strewn trails with old girlfriends.
Chill night wind. Clear autumn days and writing on paper. Boots taken off near a creek. Her kiss left on my cheek. Ohhhhhhhh.
This song makes you belive your in the woods of autum watching the orange and red leaves just fall to the ground, when i listen to this song i can even feel the autum air hit my face. Very sweet.
I think I heard this in the early 90s and went out and bought as many of his albums as I could find. Now I can listen on YouTube! Isn't it great? His music is divine...
first heard this in 1988. it still sounds as beautiful today as it did then. GW is like the wind, the rain and the very trees his music evokes--timeless and spiritual.
A masterpiece ... by a master. Oh yeah, to assist with some of these comments, Mr. George Winston is NOT dead, nor has been for several years. ;) In fact, he's currently touring, and can be seen at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in NYC on Dec. 1, 2009!
George Winston is proof that you don't need complicated and technical pieces to sound beautiful. It's the simplest of melodies that can impact us in a big way.
Too bad he's dead. Complicated pieces are also very good, but I'm just saying that you don't have to have them. Some musicians think the only way to be a "good" musician is to play the hardest and fastest you can, which I think is stupid.
You're right and I totally agree with you. Recently I've been taking a break from honing my technical skill and playing some old favorites of mine which are very beautiful :) (longing from GW being one of them)
@sobefobik Yeah. Say that now, try to play them XD
But that does have truth to it, for someone who spends a life at this, who could play the most complex songs in the world, he writes such simple (relatively) songs with emotion in them. Real emotion.
@guesswho8908 I agree, this is not a simple piece. I've been playing it on the piano since 1986. The bridge was the hardest part to master. I knew I'd gotten it down right when my parter walked in the house and thought I was playing the CD only to realize that it was me at the keyboard.
This album is a must play for me in the fall. Especially when I am able to roam Skyline Drive in Virginia It brings back the two magical autumns I spent as 5th and 6th grader in Virginia in 1971-72 when the world was young and things were much, much simpler.
Back in 83, my mom, childhood friend and I were traveling back from vacation in her camper truck. I was resting the tape player on my lap because her old truck only had an AM radio installed. It was dark outside, windy and raining fairly hard. We were traveling along PCH hwy in So-Cal and this somber song was playing perfectly to the scene just outside the wind shield. Over 25 years later when I heard this song once again, I think of her now since her passing and am thankful.
This is esquisite piano playing... George is so passionate and articulate in his delivery; musicality at its best for sure! :) So hauntingly beautiful... evokes pictures and movement so freely...

There is a graceful beauty to George Winston. Less is more. Perfection is hard to argue with.
