It looks like the second runway is still under construction, which would make this video nearly a decade old. I was there in August 1999, and British Airways still operated Boeing 747s from Manchester at that time.

Manchester Airport has only this week lost ALL long haul flights by British Airways and BMI has also pulled the plug on ALL long haul flights in the same week! This was in addition to recording a record 10% drop in passengers from the previous year!
Manchester like it's grotty little airport is in serious terminal decline!
Its a very nice airport...but over the years it has got s little quit in some terminals and it has 3 terminals and 2 runways a bit big for a airport in northen england!
They say land long so you can vacate the runaway Faster than landing at the end of the runaway and taxing to the exit point they want you to get off the runway asap for the bigger jets to land
you want to try landing on the glideslope at 70kias on a 3 mile runway when the taxi turnoff to the parking area is 2/3 of the way down the runway and you have an A330 behind you on a 5 mile final!
Reminds me of my days learning to fly at a big airport. You always get the hurry up from controllers at big airports. The jets are barrelling in at 160 knots while you bimble along at 60. BTW bluenose, a stall warning just at touchdown is considered a good thing. %0 foot off the ground, a bad thing! And Prescott, he were high because he were asked to land long! Sheesh! All these Microsoft pilots!
This is a very funny video. I liked your commentary throughout. I thought if you were on the runway then it is "yours" and no-one else can land. Pity you get the hurry up from controllers just because your small.
very nice video i like the fact you have the ATC in the video. Nice landing althought judging by the white lights at the side of the runway you were too high but you had loads of runway so who cares i'm not going to be one of these gits who critisise everything.
nice landing and yes i do remember the flight simulator chalenge on the krypton factor it was great.
You alyways come in high on a visual approach in a light aircraft compared to the 3 degrees glide slope of the PAPI's otherwise you are low and slow for a long time, Not good if the donkey stops! Also he was asked to Land Long.
Just before the Touch Down the Stall Warner should Sound it sounds about 5 Knots above the stall and the audible signal is what tells you your about to lose a lot of lift and hence flop on the the runway At that phase of the landing you are not looking at your Airspeed Indicator.
A Stall in a PA38 is something you don't want to do, They don't call them TerrorHawks for nothing!
I'm about to start training for my PPL in September, so it's really interesting to hear the radio traffic - it provides much more of an insight than the ones without it. It sounds complicated mind :P
it means land long eg land in the middle of the runaway so he can vacate quicker so the big beast air planes can land 747ect if he landed at the end of the runaway it would take longer to vacate
Thanks for the comeback. I had a feeling that was what it meant but just wanted to check. Excellent to hear all the voice comms too. Really enjoyed this vid.
This was actually done very easily - a cheap lav mic was inserted into the passenger's headphones (ie mine), then this mic was connected to the camera. Thus the internal headset feed and the radio output were recorded.
hey is it not your intention to touchdown on the numbers at Manchester? I learned to fly in the states...on that same aircraft too. I was taught to aim to touch down just at or past the runway threshold.
Not at Manchester, No. You have to vacate the runway as quickly as possible as the next 747 is only minutes behind. You'll she that I'm off the runway very soon after tuchdown at the correct exit for the NEA apron.
It is Manchester Airport, the two runways run parallel to one another, the reason why he's high on final is to vacate the runway as quickly as possible for the other aircraft in sequence on the ILS. It's good to watch small aircraft land at manchester, makes a change to seeing a constant flow of jets!
This is defenitley MAN/EGCC, as you can hear it being said numerous times by both ATC and the pilot.
mole646 yes he is high, but at the request of the Air Traffic Controller. By moving the intended TDZ or aiming point down the runway by flying higher on approach the pilot cuts his taxi time vacating the runway.
This is especially important with a faster aircraft approaching behind it. The overall distance of the runway is 3048m, so I think the pilot had a bit to spare...
Incorrect. Several issues show that its clearly MAN - runway 24R (now 23R) doesn't exist at LGW. The pilot calls up with 'Manchester Tower'. MAN TWRs frequency is 118.620 - GND is 121.850. The NEA exists at MAN, not LGW.
You can tell thats its MAN just from looking at it! The parallel runways aren't directly next to each other - 23L starts further west that 23R so it's not totally clear in the video.

*Oh look theres manchester airport* Noo well it is where were landing - if the main building said london gatwick then i think they turned left at the wrong cloud :P
They were passed (note that this is unusual) to Final Director on 121.350 (their job is to guide aircraft to the ILS/approach when busy), then to the aerodrome controller (Tower) on 118.625.
very nice landing, nice approuch aswell, at birmingham most if not all visitor aircraft like PA38's, cessna's, and citations are told to land long, i guess air traffic want then off the runway as soon as possible,, that must be nerve rackin knowing theres a boeing 777 4 miles behind you lol
G-BWNR is now G-LFSM at LPL flyingschool. I'm training for my PPL at Liverpool and I've flown G-SM once or twice. Quite a nice kite i think you'll agree :)
Does it still have the "clockwork" radio, as described by Ed as being out of the TARDIS? I always thought that it worked better that the "digital" one above it which is why I used it.

Dear All,
I have some question about psychology:
*why do we love flying and being in the sky?
*Why do we relate flying with our full potentials and with our successes?
*Why do we use the phases "take off" and "fly high" as a kind of adjectives to describe our success of our hard working?
*Why do we used the word "runway" as a expression of optimistic future of a person/ a team?
*Why do we relate aviation with freedom?
THANK YOU IN ADVANCE for your creative ideas and brainstorm.

They were passed (note that this is unusual) to Final Director on 121.350 (their job is to guide aircraft to the ILS/approach when busy), then to the aerodrome controller (Tower) on 118.625.

very nice landing, nice approuch aswell, at birmingham most if not all visitor aircraft like PA38's, cessna's, and citations are told to land long, i guess air traffic want then off the runway as soon as possible,, that must be nerve rackin knowing theres a boeing 777 4 miles behind you lol
great landing
5 stars

G-BWNR is now G-LFSM at LPL flyingschool. I'm training for my PPL at Liverpool and I've flown G-SM once or twice. Quite a nice kite i think you'll agree :)

Does it still have the "clockwork" radio, as described by Ed as being out of the TARDIS? I always thought that it worked better that the "digital" one above it which is why I used it.

Your passenger - "whats that noise" *looks nervous* :D hehe
Very high approach however overall good landing :)

The height is deliberate. GA is asked to land long so they can vacate the runway quickly at the right point. That's the taxiway I turned down.

If it's any consolation, my first ever landing was about as good as that... at Woodford.
