Top comments SOUND nice, but it wasn't all love and prosperity during this time. How were the Vietnam Veterans treated upon their return to the U.S.? Men who were TOLD by the goverment by DRAFT that they were going to WAR. You spit on them and called them animals. Way to LOVE!
I love the tone on the chorus. A UK group String Driven Thing had a similar sound albeit many years later.I think I did have this record. It was a serious message but pop sound. Reach Out in the Darkness:sounds like an awesome idea. I was only 7 or 8 and had no idea what they were singing about then.
The first thing that I noticed is that the song seems to play along in a highly pre determined manner based on the prevailing music of the time. We'd like to think that things were much better in the past or will be in the future but that's purely subjective experience. The message is is stark contrast to the horrors that were going on in Vietnam. There is still a unreality to it. If anything it seems to be a feel good escape from it all.
@EngrossingEnigma First I commend you on a thoughtful post. The song builds on what was the jargon and musical river of the day as any song in any era. The message was a common theme in response to the peace love and civil rights movements of the youth in North America Other songs would address the war and it's effects. Ones that evoke Vietnam for me are Galveston by Glen Campbell, Sky Pilot the Animals and Paint it Black - the Rolling Stones. I hope this gives you food for thought.
@WLP1024usarmy Well, in my opinion, we had a quality of life back then. Things started to head south from 1971 to date. The biggest cancer we are faced with today is simple..it's called "GREED". Enough is just not enough for most people! I want what he has, because I don't have it! Money is fine as long as you control it, however when you let money control you, that is the fuel that propels the cancer in todays world. The sad part! Noboby has come forward to remove the cancer! Is this a lie?
@Bacmaster The GREED of Entitlement. Worse than that, the GREED of the politics that created the Age of Entitlement. Holy Sh!t! We survived The Cultural Revolution, The ME Generation, Generation X, and The Millennium; only to be brought down by "The Age Of Entitlement"!
I am proud to look back and say I was there (most of the time! ;-} ). At the end of the day, come home from WORK and feel like I accomplished something and made a difference for myself. And it didn't kill me!
All music has a message. This song, circa 1968 gives a message of hope. For those who were not there or not yet born...this was the message of an entire generation/ culture at that time. Now the message of contemporary music is one of hopelessness and anger and irresponsibility. So much has been lost. So much!
@valleyofgalon Sadly, you are 100% correct. I recall almost every song did have a message. Love, respect, manners, morals, communication, racial harmony etc...This was the glue that bound us together as a people during tough times in the 1960's. We had hope to change things for the better back then.
Yes...so much has been lost. Too much! Thank you for your comment.
@Bacmaster Was born in 1964 and i do realize the loss of wholsomeness that the world lacks. The 1965 - 1970 run of music clearly the best. I like the early and mid 80's because it was my time, but nothing compares to the sounds of when i was little.
@valleyofgalon Definitely. Lyrics were much more positive back then than they are now. Too much to explain why but music is an influence in people's lives whether they realize it or not. Especially their mental states.
@valleyofgalon You are so correct. I was born after the era had passed (1975) but I still feel it in my heart and soul. This music moved a whole generation, and for some of us, whether we were actually there or not, it will be 1968 forever. Peace and love to you, my friend.
@valleyofgalon God, what wonderful memories of a much better time in our lives! Thank you so much! We still carry the hope, love and happiness in our hearts and beings. That is the most important thing. It is different than younger people today. They have no excuses either. We went through the civil rights movements, riots, assassinations and we still came out of it stronger with love & peace.
CLASSIC DANCE TRACK! WONDERFUL WHEN KRUSH DID LET'S GET TOGETHER (SO GROOVY NOW) IN '92. REMARKABLE THIS SONG WENT TOP 10 IN 1968, BECAUSE LIKE EVEN DANCING IN THE STREETS IT WAS CONSIDERED SUBVERSIVE BECAUSE OF IT'S MESSAGE! 2 COPIES OF THE ORIGINAL MONO 7" AND YOU'VE GOT AN EXTENDED DANCE MIX RELEVANT TO TODAY! THIS SONG RULES VINYL TOO! DAVEDJ
Wow ! This IS the spirit of the '60's/early'70's, much so!
Let's replace Jip-Hop with Motown and the wonderfully articulate and UPLIFTING words and tunes that spoke of our shared human experience ! Stop 'gangsta' rap, and get positive ! We're all human, and have the need for, and capacity to love !!
And I must say, there seems a bit much cynicism, lament, blaming and calls to give up and give in to (ANARCHY ! ! )
@redfoxskater Don't know how to 'cat-a-gorize' it, but a good tune with a powereful and positive message from the '60's that this generation may find profit in it's heed.
This was one of the first records that I bought for my car record player in my sixty eight Mustang. Record players were out and eight tracks were coming of age....but I couldn't resist buying it at Micky Shores down on Woodward. Not too many people my age had ever seen a car record player.

@LedWilde You're so right! Back then, the message was intended to bring people together.
Today they are separated by hate, violence, greed and tragic events. Tell me, what is positive
in todays world? Close your eyes, what do you see? There's your answer...
Peace be with you and God help us
