Yes, that is Stephen King reading his own story. The short story "1408" is in the book "Everything's Eventual - 14 Dark Tales." There's a preface to the story. Apparently "1408" began as a writing style example for King's book "On Writing." He wrote four pages and liked the story so much, he completed it. I enjoyed the film but it was hard to tell reality from mental breakdown.
My husband and I listened to this while we were driving cross country on our honeymoon in 2001. Story creeped me out then and it creeps me out now. Stephen King doing the voice of the phone gives me chills still. Great story. Much better than the movie (although I thought the movie was decent, but Sam Jackson wasn't who I pictured as the manager at all).
@FKatzenjammer Maybe this is a little late.. but i agree. I listened to this in a car with my mom and I found it equally scary. Also, Cell is pretty crazy.
@essexboy240 I like thr movie a lot but I agree the book is much better. You know the movie adaptions of books are always WAY different then the books but I tend to like both.
@essexboy240 I thought the film was pretty good and is the reason why I'm listening to this. But the old cliche of books are better than film adaptations instantly spring to mind: King is so descriptive in his writing, you can almost smell New York whilst listening to this.
