  • I have heard every single thing you brought up with my dog, I especially like 1:27, that one happens so often with the vest she has that says DO NOT PET all over it. Thank you for being you.

  • thank you for showing others what so many of us hear every single time we are out in public with our SD. As many also know if you don't have the yellow dog with either the yellow or green cape on them it is even more comments that we deal with.

  • @itswhip you obviously don't understand what a service dog is... A service dog isn't to please the public, it's considered, under law, to be medical equipment. You have no idea how frustrating it is to go out every time and have your dog cooed at and/or get negative reactions/comments. It's not fun being singled out by people and accused... When our dog is medical aid. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if people started baby talking wheelchairs and oxygen tanks.

  • I had my service dog with me at a Renaissance Faire that happened the last weekend of January. The Ren Faire doesn't allow pets. She is a Psychiatric Service Dog, and is a Cairn Terrier Mix. Because she is only a foot tall, she doesn't look like a typical "physical disability" dog. I was walking her when a woman literally grabbed hold of her and started petting her. She saw the vest and said, "I thought it said, "Adopt me!" Is she up for adoption?" Both side patches read, "I Am A Service Dog"

  • My wife, a blind guide dog user, always gets the remark: "Oh. But you dont look blind", whenever she is questioned about her guide. To which she replies: "Really? Just what does "blind" look like anyway? I've never seen it."

So far, she has not gotten a satisfactory answer.

  • awesome

  • all so true! great video! I love it when people read the do not pet me sign OUTLoud WHILE they are petting my dog. Silly people, if only they knew how silly they looked!

  • Could not thumbs-up this hard enough! I've heard almost every one of these.

    My favorite response:

    Q) Is she a seeing eye dog?

    A) No, she's a hearing assistance dog.

    Q) You can hear just fine though.

    A) Well, she can read lips.

  • You forgot my favorite: "Is that a drug sniffing dog!?"

  • Great video. Before my dogs, I had a difficult time in crowds, shopping, driving, and I have a medical problem. My SDs dogs have watched my back and let me know when people are getting close. They have saved me from possible accidents from high speed driving. My dogs react to that. w/dogs people bother me, keep me. Please admire my dog from a distance. My ole Girl was beautiful. The new Boy is handsome. We are still trainig. Leave him alone. Read his cape.

  • I just posted this on my service dog blog - thanks! It makes a difference! People are really annoying sometimes... and the people that follow you around because they know they can't interact, but want to see what the dog is doing!!!!

  • Good stuff. I really dug this video!! :)

  • ive never seen a service dog anywhere in public, though i wouldnt think i would be bothered by it. but what would I say... most likely nothing..

then again if it were the girl on the video i'd definitely say something to annoy her. seems anything would

  • @itswhip not saying anything is definitely a good decision. and have you not read through the other comments? ALL of us get annoyed by these questions. we hear them again, and again, and again... but thanks for trying to invalidate my feelings and act as though i'm an over-reactive girl. oh, wait, does that seem over-reactive of me?

  • @mobeckrug You can't blame everyone. A lot of people may be ignorant to the paradigm, and curiosity is only human nature. Perhaps you could be the one to educate someone if you love what you are doing so much. A video educating people would be much more productive than what you've done here.

This one person is actually mad that someone asked where to get a dog harness? That speaks enough for the tone of the commentators.

  • @itswhip this video IS educating people...or at the very least laying the groundwork. it isn't my job to tell people how problematic these comments are that i'm repeating in this video. it is exhausting and frustrating to hear them all day every day. most days i'm just trying to walk without feeling dizzy and disoriented, and instead i get stopped by people only to hear rude and insensitive comments. the onus of education should never be a burden placed upon marginalized groups.

  • @mobeckrug its not educating as much as it is whining, or to the ones involved might see it as, "venting." If the purpose of this was to indeed educate, perhaps a less abrasive way would help serve your cause a bit more effectively. The girl in the video just comes across as mean and intolerable and thats all I get from it. Sensitivity is a 2-way street, no?

  • @itswhip so...you clearly don't get the whole sociological concept of parodying microaggressions and the 'shit ___ people say' concept as a whole. pity, you're missing out on a great medium. as to the two-way street, that is only something someone in a privileged position would say. every day i get hit by a fucking bus on that two way street, so, no, not gonna go there.

  • @itswhip Just wait until you're disabled yourself (because if you live long enough, you will acquire a disability), then come back and call it whining after you're stopped 20 times when you're on a 5 minute shopping trip to get milk and it turns into a 30 minute trip just to stop and answer questions.

  • @itswhip if you did want to read more, check this out: meloukhia (dot) net/2011/05/access_is_a_twofold_issue (dot) html ...i think it captures the way many of us sd handlers feel about accessibility. i wish i could agree that ignorance lets people off the hook, but that just isn't the case when it's our lives that are being affected each and every day by said ignorance.

  • "Where can I get one of those service dog harnesses for my dog?!" is the WORST. Especially when they have an untrained, yappy, nippy, peeing in the store misfit of a dog.

  • Oh my God yes!!! I've heard all of this BS!!! Thanks for the video. It's especially strange when people point & say, "Oh look! A seeing eye dog!" & here I am clearly reading ingredients on a product in my hand. Or, "You can't bring a dog in here!" when she has "SERVICE DOG" CLEARLY emblazoned on her harness! I don't even bother to tell people she's a psychiatric service dog anymore, I just say she's Medical alert and response dog so I don't have to go through the 3rd degree with every stranger.

  • I never understood why people bark at dogs in general, not just service dogs although that is the worst, but people do it to any dog. I mean seriously what are they trying to do? It seems the people who are scared are more likely to do this. Then if the dog ignores them they bark louder.

  • My stepson's father's side of the family was absolutely against us getting a service dog for our sons. My "favorite" argument against it was that he would "attract too much attention in school" and it "wouldn't be fair to his classmates". I've never wanted to smack someone in the head quite as much before in my life as I did at that moment. I don't see his classmates having to deal with diabetes every day... where's the fairness in that????

  • HAHAHAHA so true!!! Great video!! Some you forgot....I didn't know xxxx (breed of dog) could be a service dog?? What is WRONG with you?? I wish my children behaved like that? Can you train THEM? Where can I rent one of those? Will he bite me? He looks SAD! Get that THING away from me! OH he scared me!! Can I pet him? Thats MEAN! Where do I buy one of those vests I want to bring MY dog with me! Isn't it sad to give them away?? mom, look its a DOG!!! why is there a dog in here??
  • @manyinone1 I hear that first question ALL the time. "I didn't know poodles could be a service dog??"

  • @daytonagirl400 Me too.

  • Great job and love the video. :)

  • I try to be tolerant and respond to ignorance with kindness--it's just my way, and how I was raised. But there are times I do not have the energy to educate, and during those times, I'll hand out a brochure outlining service dog etiquette and also some pictures and information on how my dog assists me. Great video! Kudos!

  • @shiningeyes3 and that was for the comment from stillupandorange, can that be erased or deleted?

  • @shiningeyes3 I deleted it for you. I appreciate your support, and I am sorry that someone said something so ignorant about your daughter. <3

  • Thank you to both :0) You are quite the talk in my circle, but in a good way, so true, right on the spot, given with grace, wisdom and humor. Good job, well done. :0)

  • The people that dont like this video are the ones that say it. And you know what, if people say we should educate them, well maybe they should start being considerate to us. Maybe they should think about how many people per day ask us the things their asking us. And, also, those things are very rude to say to someone who has a disability.

  • @Ilovescrubs99 yes! my thoughts exactly. yes, it would be nice to be able to educate everyone in theory, but when i'm trying keep my balance during a dizzy spell and can barely stay conscious some days, it should NOT be my job to educate anyone. ever.

  • Permission to show this at a public SD presentation for our SD Etiquette section. All attribution will be given. Rebecca (.) Fouts @ gmail (.) com (delete spaces and parenthesis.

  • @RFouts0 Yes, of course you may!

  • Found this gem in my inbox:

@StillUpandOrange has sent you a message:

Hey I have a service dog, and I just want you to know that you don't have to be a twat. You are giving everyone who needs a service dog a bad name. So please for the sake of all people that have service dogs and are unable to go about normal life without one. Lighten up. If someone asks, simply educate them. Don't be such a fucking cunt. Well hope you take the advice.

  • @little0sp00n People are saying we should not be rude, when they are the rude ones. I liked this video. its true and those things are very inconsiderate. Anyways, thats just one persons opinion. I liked the video.

  • @little0sp00n ha, lovely. someone needs to get past their internalized ableism and understand that it isn't the burden of the oppressed to educate the privileged. i think the misogynistic language in the post is my fave. hahahahaa so, so sad

  • @mobeckrug It was sent to me in a private message, but the way i see it is if you're going to say something that rude, unnecessary, ableist, and misogynistic, you're damn straight i'm gonna call you out on it in the public sphere. if that person was so proud enough to call me a "cunt" for no reason, they should be able to do it without hiding.

  • I'm deaf, would like this video cc so I know what I'm happily ignoring.. most of the time. I still get the petaholics, people who want to let their dogs molest mine, people yelling at me, people asking dumb questions... I guess actually, I'm not evading ENOUGH dumbness. But we have educating to do, too.

  • @ASLsoFine i'm so, so sorry i don't have this captioned or listed in the description. i'll get right on that. gahh, what an awful thing to forget! thank you so, so much for checking me on my hearing privilege.

  • @ASLsoFine- I'm very sorry we forgot to include some sort of transcription to begin with. I don't know how to add subtitles, but I have added a transcription of the dialogue to the Info section.

  • When someone says "You don't look disabled." I reply, "Why thank you! And you don't look like a moron!" Then I continue on my merry.

  • @Unegawaya1972 Haha, I love that response.

  • @Unegawaya1972 I almost peed myself laughing. I get that all the time when parking in a handicap zone. I have lupus, fibro and severe arthritis and sometimes can hardly walk, but they still say it O.o... I will have to remember to do this... I LOVE it!!! Thank you!!

  • @Unegawaya1972

Wow! I have PTSD and I can get away with that. Wonder why I haven't said that to anyone. I usually just ignore the asses or tell them I am a veteran, which is true, and veterans are popular right now as long as there isn't a sale at Walmart. But, my generation of veterans were not popular. I can come up with something fitting for the stupid. Thanks.

  • Thank you!

  • First time i had this happen was last year at a fair.

I was looking at something and I heard a women say.. KIDS go stand with the lady with the DOG and i'll take you pic, it took me a few seconds to realize she was talking about ME!

  • I turned around to find her kids trying to stand next my dog (tucker, owner/trained rough collie), I put him behind me in a sit and said exscuse me what the #$%^&* are you doing?? I am taking a picture she said. I actully said over my dead body. I am a disabled person NOT a damn sideshow attraction, now leave me alone before I go find surcrity... Sometimes you have to be rude back.

  • The only thing she forgot was the BARKERS who walk behind you and bark and meow and make other stupid animal noises thinking the dog is going to respond to them.

  • @kwelyroos71 I did forget that one! there is one little clip with a 'woof' happening at her, but it isn't emphasized enough. thanks!

  • @mobeckrug

i get that alot, by either men or teenage boys. I completely totally embarass the heck out of them.. And its ALWAYS in wal-mart! the last time it happened there was a bunch of people around and I can't remember what i say to the barker but it was perfect and I got applause, the wife of the dude that was doing to barking hugged me and said that was the best thing i could have done!

  • the key is to embarass them and to also tell them if you fall from them doing that, that they can get arrested for it.

  • @kwelyroos71 that is so awesome! good for you, if you can remember what you said, please let me know!

  • oh we can add to that- what kind of dog is that? we've never seen one of THOSE be a service dog. service dogs are labradors and german shepherds, what's THAT? so what's wrong with your kid anyway? what kind of vest is that, we've never seen that color/type before. PAPERS! VEE MUST SEE YOUR PAPERS!

  • @BkAkitas -i get the 'what kind of dog is that' aaaallllll the time. but i got that before she was a sd too, i thought it is just because of how unique she looks. but maybe not! thanks for watching and commenting :D

  • @BkAkitas

I had someone ask if my rough collie was a greyhound with hair in Wal-mart.

I never tell people where I get: vests/patches/ or SD type stuff. I have refered a few people to ruffwear though. if i get asked where i got his boots or where did i get the pack.

Speaking of boots!! WHY is your dog wearing boots? (to the dog) awwww you sweet thing, have to wear those awful things on your poor whittle feet.

    i have heard it all

  • @BkAkitas YES to the papers-demand. Most recently at a hospital, I was stopped by security and they demanded papers. When I emailed the admin, I was told that if I didn't want that to happen in the future, I should see DELTA SOCIETY'S rules for SD's, which includes having vet records upon request. Boy do I have a lot of educating to do. And my first call is to Delta Society to see if they'll write a letter clarifying that they are talking about THERAPY DOGS NOT SD's.

  • I hate the people who talk TO my dog about how he never gets to be a dog.

  • LOL This is SOOO true! We SD handlers hear this stuff allllll the time! Thanks for making this video!

  • LOVE IT!! I think every SD handler has heard these at least once (a week) while out and about. May I have permission to post a link on Kima's FB fanpage? (facebook.com/KimaBearServiceDog) I created the page mainly for inquisitive students at the college where I work. This video puts a humourous spin on the comments we hear all too often. BTW - beautiful SD. What breed is s/he? :-) Charli & Kima

  • @StikFigureChik74 Yes! please share around as much as you'd like! and she is a border collie, catahoula leopard dog mix. thanks!

  • @StikFigureChik74 Of course you may link to this video on Kima's fanpage!

  • @StikFigureChik74 There's another frequently asked question many SD users hear -- at least for me, as I have a beauceron. "What breed is he? Is it a girl, boy? Is he a shepherd/rottie cross? Is he...a Doberman cross? Is he a mutt?" LOL

  • I!LOVE!THIS! Thank you so much. You said it all here.

  • I raised 6 puppies for CCI and heard a lot of these! One man at the car wash walked me over to my car instead of announcing it over the intercom because he thought I was blind.

  • Love this. Have heard all of these statements and have dealt repeatedly with people who feel they can distract/interact with my service dog. I especially enjoy the sense of humor you display in putting this piece together. THANK YOU for taking the time to create this enlightening look at part of life with a service dog.

  • Sounds like the the people I run into on a regular basis.

  • Request permission to use video for educational purposes - send to Info @ ServiceDogsFL . org

  • @ServiceDogsofFlorida, of course you can use this video for educational purposes!
