With respect, it doesn't sound as though Garfield knows about the dozens of successful independent local news sites around the country that are proving there's a hunger for quality, in-depth local news now that local papers are disappearing, and an accompanying market for local advertising.

WTF? Hyperlocal "experiments" haven't been able to sustain themselves? Somebody needs to do some research.
Also, in any market, the winner will be those who execute.
