  • This lesson is so brilliant. I LOVE IT.

  • You just got right to it! Awesome! Didn't have to wade through minutes of chit chat.

  • Very cool! Thanks for sharing. You covered alot of ground in 6 minutes.

  • Anyone tell you you look like stephen king?

  • supercool! I'm not in a level where i can use this (very beginner) but it was really fun to watch and hope i'll be able to put it to good use somewhen in my musical "career' :o)

  • great!

  • I was lucky enough to actually have "private lessons" with Mr. Rolly Brown back in the 70's. We practiced White Crane Kung Fu together and I would help him with WCKF . Rolly would tell me that just learning tab is not learning the guitar, but I just wanted to be able to play some of the stuff he did..I was stupid for not taking advantage of this knowledgable, talented, dedicated guitar player..I am now retired and have the time to really learn the guitar and these vids are all anyone needs!!

  • I'm not a jazzguitarist but nevertheless I loved this lesson. I've learnd something!

  • very nice sir..

  • kool

  • Wow, so straightforward. all killer, no filler. Thanks a lot for that.

  • Sweet Chords Dude

  • He makes it look simple because he is a real musician, there are lots of us who appreciate this level of understanding and will spend happy hours soaking in this brilliant video of approximately 6 mins. I am looking forward to having a go, Love Major 7th chords

  • Fine lesson and a cool guitar as well

    Thanks so much for sharing.

    Steveo

  • you are wonderful!!! thanks.

  • I'm just wondering but do u think you can have like a music theory class? Like maybe once every week or two you can post something new? Because that would be really great =) if you don't mind that's all ha

  • I'm Glad that I found you Mr. Rolly Brown, because this is BRILLIANT STUFF!!!

  • this video is exactly what my old guitar teacher taught me, but I forgot so this is amazing

  • I LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!

    But I have a question... :)

    What makes the term (Position)?

    5th

    8th

    10th etc?

Is it the fret that the root falls on?

    I really don't understand..

    But I want too!! :)

Thenk you Rolly Brown!!! You're a Genious Teacher!!!

  • @DavidDriftwood FIRST FINGER ON THE FIRST FRET = IST POS. FIRST FINGER ON 5TH FRET =5TH POS. ETC

  • I loved this video. Its hard to find explanations for the chords people show you but this does a great job and definetely opens the door to a better chord vocab. 5-stars

  • you sir, are the shite

  • this is not 6mins. i want my money back!

  • your check is in the mail.

  • @djangokeli Haha this video you made is simply amazing man! I love you brother! Seriously though... much thanks for this video!

  • It would help greatly if you used a low angle front light to fill in the shadows under your fretboard fingers...anything would be OK like a bare bulb table lamp on the floor or a portable flourescent, etc. The detail gets lost with just the overhead light and the rosewood fingerboard. But great stuff otherwise.

  • I was lucky to have Rolly as a teacher twice at the Swannanoa Gathering guitar week, and he's really the best teacher I've ever had in any subject or setting. Pretty sure he does private lessons either online with a webcam or by video disc/file swapping. Thanks again, Rolly! Superb contribution to guitar pedagogy.

  • Rolly Brown - thanks 240 times! BTW, I have an ole Gibson LG-00 ca 1937 that has precisely the same sound as the one

your'e using here...great little axes, no?

  • Hey Rolly. I was wondering (or anyone) I have a hard time muting the strings that aren't supposed to be played. Can anyone explain that to me??

  • Usually it's easier to mute the strings than to not mute them. Just relax your left hand a bit more than usual.

  • hey thanks a lot this video helped me a lot let me know when your other video is done please. I'm ready for it.

  • you gotta book on this? amazing!

  • Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. This video is such an eye opener for me. Thanks Rolly

  • hey! please can i am in windsor, ontario. MY bIG favour is that can i meet the guy in this video :(.. i am tired of just playing my basic chords(a,d,e,c,f,g,am,) please!!!

  • I started using the salvador 4 Chord Scale book for along time, I also studied with him for a couple of yrs way before his passing. I started getting bored with the book I would forget most of The many pages I would practice, So, I started a system of my own similar to what you are showing And I would do alot of my own Chord Inversions from Top,Middle,Bottom, add 3rd Flt 3rd, ETC. I found it a great way to remember chords. Now you've inspired me alot, Thanks for The Great Vid! Great Lesson.

  • Thanks a million for the VERY helpful video!! a quick question.. where is this "cueing line" on you tube? I'd love to be able to go back to the stop I stopped the video..

    Thanks!

    Shah

  • Hey, It's me, Rolly! I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you for the kind words that you've written regarding this and the other 6 instructional videos I have on Youtube. It's gratifying to know that so many people have watched, and hopefully learned, from these videos! Thanks again, and keep on pickin'!

    best,

    Rolly Brown

  • awesome!!! good job ura fucking einstien

  • beautiful guitar...!

    Thank you... good lesson.

  • Straight up killer vid, thanks

  • No nonsense video, nice.

  • cool as hell

  • It's so... effortless!

Absolutely AMAZING lesson, thanks a ton.

  • Nice lesson, but i think that some chord diagrams inserted in the video will really help everybody out.

  • Thats really cool man :)

-you need to do a massive fast super amazing jazz melody just to show off

  • top job mister

  • wow super helpful...although i think i have to go back and watch it a couple times :) 5 stars

  • You the man Rolly Brown! You are a genius

  • that was awesome. thank you thank you thank you

  • Thanks so much for making this video! This opens up so many new possibilities for me as a guitarist.

  • I thought this was very good.

  • this is way to fast for my students

  • That's why I suggest using the "pause" button. The video is, of course, not for rank beginners, but for folks who are ready to start exploring the whole fingerboard. Other than that, it's only as fast as you make it. If it's appropriate, have your students practice just the C7 chords daily for a month or two before moving on to the other chord families.

    Hope this helps.

    Rol

  • I'm going to send students to this oustanding exposition and demonstration of primary jazz guitar chords. Great work and thank you for your generosity and knowledge posting this..

  • great job this may be very usefull to many ppl... I'm allways searchin chords and eventhough I found I new voicing that I'm not used to :P

  • nice!!! us guitarist often forget how important inversions are cause we always focus on root notes!

    thank you

  • fuck me that was good. simple but effective.

  • Thanks for taking the time to make this video !!!

  • Hey!!! really great, fast.Very good teaching!!!!

Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge!

  • This video is concise yet full of substance. Uncomplicated and easy to learn. Precise and clear to students like me. You are an excellent teacher of music. I wish to have a professor like you. More power.

  • great video--fast job! thanks

  • and if you go back to c 7 then take the e and lower to e flat, then BOOM! (hiroshima explosion)

  • he's freaking crazy!

anyway let's see if I can learn that.. thanks for posting! xD

  • imfukkenpossible

  • Wow! This isn't for begginers! I was lost in 20 seconds! Maybe one year I'll understand what he's talking about.

  • Brilliant video, man. Brilliant. I KNOW this is going to help me with my jazz playing.

  • Thank you very much, it is very easy to understand and to apply because you demonstrate it so slowly and surely...now i can show more things in my gigs...^_^...please give us more tips(jazz licks)for that chords you demonstrate.

  • This is one of the most useful teaching videos (guitar) that I have seen on YouTube. What a great contribution you have made here. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

  • Great!!!

  • fucking brilliant!!

  • how much pot do you have to smoke to get in your state of mind?? Congrats...

  • thanks but this is too hard for me to follow

  • There's a lot of info here in a small amount of time. Use the pause button, and the timeline control at the bottom of your Youtube viewer. Take small bites. Start by just learning the 4 C7 chords for awhile. Then, when you're comfortable, move on.

I think you'll find that most things on guitar are not "hard"...Things just take TIME....

    hope this helps,

    Rolly

  • thanks for the advice!

  • Great Job! Helped me a lot! Thank You

  • Thank you Django Keli, for the lesson. I would like to find the 1200 chords video.

  • Thanks.. now I have to rewind, watch, pause and take notes. Sheesh... ;)

  • BRILLIANT! Thanks alot! I love Jazz chords... :-)

  • Thanks! This will help alot! \m/

  • Thank you !

  • Great lesson great content and method ,from a keyboard player , thank you VERY MUCH for you time . you are an awesome teacher and PERSON

  • A Cmaj6 has exactly the same notes as an Am7: C E G A and A C E G. Knowing this makes it all a little easier.

  • Ah, you noticed!!

    :^)

In addition, the Cmin6 position is identical to Am7b5, which becomes immensely important later, but you can only show so much stuff in 6 minutes! ;^)

    Best,

    Rolly

  • you could have made it 480 chords if you would have mentioned putting the notes on the low E to the high E. that would double the amount of chords in like two seconds. Good job none the less. Is there a lesson about alt chords any where i would be interested in seeing that.

  • check my "1200 chords" video for the stringset you mention.

I haven't done one on altered chords yet, but maybe in time...

  • nice one, thanks

  • great lesson!!! make more please:)

  • These are three of the best guitar lesson videos I've found on the internet.

    Rolly, you rock!

  • way cool!!!

  • you are cool;)

  • Outstanding!

  • No offense, this is a good video, but you didn't play rhythm changes, you played "Satin Doll"

  • absolutely amazing video/lesson, thank you so much!

  • nice vid!! thnx for sharing!!!

  • It's like an inverted CAGED sequence..Awesome Rolly..Thanks! Much better than my vids!

  • I like your teaching, it's no bullshit, straight forward showing how to get the learning done and making it easy to visualize and remember...

thanks again, please post more vids

  • Great lesson! Do you teach guitar as a profession? If not you should think about it :D Very clear explanations and examples in these lessons.

  • oh Rolly i think you just made my summer!

    hmm... 4 note voicings......

  • dear rolly you made a wonderful video thanks so much , Oyasumi damien

  • Hey, Rolly speaking here. Just want to thank all who have watched, commented, and subscribed. My life got complicated recently, so I haven't had time for more vids, but I'll be back soon with more music, more instructionals!

  • awesome stuff dude....IM bass player , and picking up guitar also.. so its nice to actually see better ways to move em. sometimes its annoying trying to build your own chords .. and again awesome

  • Very kind of you to post this, thankyou!

  • That was one of the best explanations ever! I know a lot of chords but the inversions were never my strong suit, but they will be now, bro.

    Thanks tons!!!

  • This is an incredible step forward for me. Could you send a written version of the chords?

Beginner Uli in Berlin - Germany

  • your a legend

  • Thankyou. If you get a monute, check Mathew Smith (Padre) and (Rodrigeus). Hope you like it.

  • Very Good explanation. Worked through slowly this would be helpful to anyone!
