supercool! I'm not in a level where i can use this (very beginner) but it was really fun to watch and hope i'll be able to put it to good use somewhen in my musical "career' :o)
I was lucky enough to actually have "private lessons" with Mr. Rolly Brown back in the 70's. We practiced White Crane Kung Fu together and I would help him with WCKF . Rolly would tell me that just learning tab is not learning the guitar, but I just wanted to be able to play some of the stuff he did..I was stupid for not taking advantage of this knowledgable, talented, dedicated guitar player..I am now retired and have the time to really learn the guitar and these vids are all anyone needs!!
He makes it look simple because he is a real musician, there are lots of us who appreciate this level of understanding and will spend happy hours soaking in this brilliant video of approximately 6 mins. I am looking forward to having a go, Love Major 7th chords
I'm just wondering but do u think you can have like a music theory class? Like maybe once every week or two you can post something new? Because that would be really great =) if you don't mind that's all ha
I loved this video. Its hard to find explanations for the chords people show you but this does a great job and definetely opens the door to a better chord vocab. 5-stars
It would help greatly if you used a low angle front light to fill in the shadows under your fretboard fingers...anything would be OK like a bare bulb table lamp on the floor or a portable flourescent, etc. The detail gets lost with just the overhead light and the rosewood fingerboard. But great stuff otherwise.
I was lucky to have Rolly as a teacher twice at the Swannanoa Gathering guitar week, and he's really the best teacher I've ever had in any subject or setting. Pretty sure he does private lessons either online with a webcam or by video disc/file swapping. Thanks again, Rolly! Superb contribution to guitar pedagogy.
hey! please can i am in windsor, ontario. MY bIG favour is that can i meet the guy in this video :(.. i am tired of just playing my basic chords(a,d,e,c,f,g,am,) please!!!
I started using the salvador 4 Chord Scale book for along time, I also studied with him for a couple of yrs way before his passing. I started getting bored with the book I would forget most of The many pages I would practice, So, I started a system of my own similar to what you are showing And I would do alot of my own Chord Inversions from Top,Middle,Bottom, add 3rd Flt 3rd, ETC. I found it a great way to remember chords. Now you've inspired me alot, Thanks for The Great Vid! Great Lesson.
Thanks a million for the VERY helpful video!! a quick question.. where is this "cueing line" on you tube? I'd love to be able to go back to the stop I stopped the video..
Hey, It's me, Rolly! I just wanted to take a minute to thank all of you for the kind words that you've written regarding this and the other 6 instructional videos I have on Youtube. It's gratifying to know that so many people have watched, and hopefully learned, from these videos! Thanks again, and keep on pickin'!
That's why I suggest using the "pause" button. The video is, of course, not for rank beginners, but for folks who are ready to start exploring the whole fingerboard. Other than that, it's only as fast as you make it. If it's appropriate, have your students practice just the C7 chords daily for a month or two before moving on to the other chord families.
I'm going to send students to this oustanding exposition and demonstration of primary jazz guitar chords. Great work and thank you for your generosity and knowledge posting this..
This video is concise yet full of substance. Uncomplicated and easy to learn. Precise and clear to students like me. You are an excellent teacher of music. I wish to have a professor like you. More power.
Thank you very much, it is very easy to understand and to apply because you demonstrate it so slowly and surely...now i can show more things in my gigs...^_^...please give us more tips(jazz licks)for that chords you demonstrate.
This is one of the most useful teaching videos (guitar) that I have seen on YouTube. What a great contribution you have made here. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
There's a lot of info here in a small amount of time. Use the pause button, and the timeline control at the bottom of your Youtube viewer. Take small bites. Start by just learning the 4 C7 chords for awhile. Then, when you're comfortable, move on.
I think you'll find that most things on guitar are not "hard"...Things just take TIME....
you could have made it 480 chords if you would have mentioned putting the notes on the low E to the high E. that would double the amount of chords in like two seconds. Good job none the less. Is there a lesson about alt chords any where i would be interested in seeing that.
Hey, Rolly speaking here. Just want to thank all who have watched, commented, and subscribed. My life got complicated recently, so I haven't had time for more vids, but I'll be back soon with more music, more instructionals!
awesome stuff dude....IM bass player , and picking up guitar also.. so its nice to actually see better ways to move em. sometimes its annoying trying to build your own chords .. and again awesome

Usually it's easier to mute the strings than to not mute them. Just relax your left hand a bit more than usual.

A Cmaj6 has exactly the same notes as an Am7: C E G A and A C E G. Knowing this makes it all a little easier.

Ah, you noticed!!

In addition, the Cmin6 position is identical to Am7b5, which becomes immensely important later, but you can only show so much stuff in 6 minutes! ;^)
