I seriously spent a very long time looking for this movie's title! My uncle used to have a vhs copy of it when i was younger, and i remember just a small piece of it. I tried google-ing it, but i didn't know any specific detail to it; other than knowing that the case is black with red, and the title starting with "the". Hours on the internet browsing for it. I was on IMDb "Earliest Horror Titles", got to #5630, and there it was! Can't wait to see it once more!
Cronenberg is a amazing director im going to watch this next. If you enjoy films like this i have a facebook page called "the good horror film guide" where i have a load of full film links and reviews of great and not so great horror films all aided and embetted by the mighty "sarcasometer".
This is my favorite Cronenberg film, simply because of all the films he's made, this is his most personal. You can just sense the bitterness and frustration Cronenberg was feeling during the course and events of his life around the making of the movie (he was engaging in a very nasty custody battle with his ex-wife at the time and had to practically kidnap his daughter just to spend any time with her).
This isn't just about body horror.... it's about familial breakdown :(
The Brood (1979) C-90m BOMB "Samantha Eggar eats her own afterbirth while midget clones beat grandparents and lovely young schoolteachers to death with mallets. It's a big, wide, wonderful world we live in, isn't it?"
I have not seen the movie, but the way he wrote that review always stuck in my mind. What's he's saying I think is that scenes like that are so repulsive and unnecessary that whatever other merits the movie might have are totally irrelevant.
@danning1 well she didn't actually eat her baby... she cleaned it with her tongue (so she just licked it). He must've seen the cut version. He must've been angry at it cause it's so dark. It's like saying that Requiem for a dream or Oldboy are bad. But once you realise that the movie actually got to you like that, that's when you know it was well made
After nearly a month since I wrote that comment (and totally forgot about it), I remember that I was actually drunk that night. (Probably mixed David Cronenberg with other directors like Wes Craven or something). My fault!!
If the text wouldn't have been displayed and the guy would have stopped talking, saying the fucking cheesiest lines to amp up the movie, this would have been a much better trailer.
I picked this movie up at a flea market expecting it to be a mildly entertaining b-movie. Wow was I wrong. This is one of the most unnerving horror films that I have ever watched.
@28335 Tell me what is it about i'm need to know and here's another movie you need t check out it's called the Pit came out in 1981 real good horror flick I saw this movie when I was like 8 or 9.
Cronenberg's best movie, completely original and bizarre idea. EST from hell. Tragically, it went over the heads of most critics at the time. Ebert's review was unkind and very unfair.
If you are like I was, exploring old scary movies for a forgotten classic, AVOID this movie like the Plague! I found it slow-moving, boring, pointless, off-kilter, and torturous. The opening is dull. The characters never develop into interesting people. Every line is deadpan, except for the screams & shouted curses, which seem improvised. I can't imagine why it was ever filmed If you liked this, you probably enjoy sitting in a dark closet, waiting for someone to open the door.
Saw this for the first time last night and found it genuinely disturbing and sickening... and I have seen some nasty movies!!! Reed is great and the concept is real, though we have it taken to the extreme, as is expected with the Cronenberg calling card. Not for everyone but I got the point.
hahaha the trailer doesn't make sense xD ... wow! now the trailers are most specifics or the narrator tells more about the moviet xD ... i've never seen this movie but i'd like to watch it ---

@XGiAnCoX That's how trailers were back then. They'd always show the title, more scenes, the title, more scenes, the title, over and over again until the mind boggleth.

But this trailer makes it look like a B-grade horror flick. I hope to see this movie soon but it's so less known that it's hard to find, at least here in India.
This movie is amazing, I had no idea. Great plot idea, excellent acting (Reed & Eggar) and intelligent telling. And one of the most haunting scores I've heard.
Nola Carveth (Samatha Eggar) is producing deformed kids through her pent up rage and whenever she gets upset the deformed children go and kill who ever she's mad at. the movie also deals with a thing called psychoplasma. these patients are being subjected to this kind of therapy which causes tumors to form. it's a good movie. keeps you on the edge of your seat.
This is probably in my top ten of all time horror movies. Cronenberg just sometimes has a bad habit of talking over our heads at times. He did that in The Brood a lot and I think it is the only fault with the movie
This is my favorite Cronenberg movie of all, but this trailer didn't do it justice. The 'psycho-plasmics' plotline is brilliant; they should have tried to work that in. Still, it's a must-see classic, and we'll probably never see horror films with this kind of intelligence again. And that includes the inevitable remake.

Thanks for reiterating that this film isn't as dumb as it looks on this trailer. I have read about it a few places and it sounded very innovative.

It's also FUCKING SCARY.

One of my favourite Cronenberg movies. I agree with JonChristopher999, this trailer doesn't do the film justice. It makes it look cheesy.

This is an amazing intelligent horror film. No doubt, this was an inspiration for Aphex Twin's 'Come To Daddy' music video.

yeah. if that's true, this film should be recongnised as something that inspired possibly the scariest music video ever.

Well, the trailer sure makes it look scary. Because they keep telling us "This movie is scary."

this trailer is pretty cheesy, doesn't really do the movie justice. This movie certainly isn't one of the scarier horror movies out there.

yeah, that scene of samantha eggar liking one of her babies is fucking disturbing
that movie has the look of any other 70's movies but it was miles ahead of the rest
as usual croneberg take the horror genre to new levels
