While Stephen Fry doesn't have the musical ability of Viv, he did absorb the comedic wit. When I hear Stephen Fry make an opinion, I hear Vivian Stanshall.
A terrific programme! God, do I miss Viv... The man was a genius; uniquely gifted and incredibly funny. There will never be another Vivian Stanshall. God bless the ginger geezer...
For me as a child in America Viv stole the show when we finally got to see "Magical Mystery Tour". Even the campy stuff from "Do Not Adjust Your Set" is funny as hell, and miles ahead of its time. Thank you, Viv, on whatever cloud you're playing one of your many stringed instruments...
Viv had the talent of every comedian and writer you know, ever Seinfeld, every Woody Allen, every George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Lenny Bruce, Chris Rock... every talent you've ever experienced -- all that and then some! He was misunderstood in his lifetime because he was operating at a comic and intellectual level far above them, and even above today's usual fare.
Very very very few Viv Stanshall's. The term "Great British eccentric" is overused. Here is man whose talent and intelligence completely overwhelmed the times he lived in, and would completely overwhelm any age.

So if his dad had been nice to him there'd never have been any art?

Genius... absolute genius... if only Viv were still here.
(Spotted in the band: Danny Thompson on double-bass, and ex-Bonzo Rodney Slater on bass sax.)

His comic timing was great. That part where he smiles and says "most people's names are shut-up, as I'm sure you know" made me laugh hysterically.

Viv existed on a plane few will ever touch.
