Okay many people think teaching kids at school Minecraft is useless, but it can actually be the opposite. Say you were a social studies teacher that's teaching about France, you could build Paris to show children what it looks like without pictures, or you could make them do it as a school project. Minecraft can be productive if you use it in school. In fact, I'm thinking of building a small part of Afghanistan for my school to show what environment people in Afghanistan have to live in.
@oTheGriMReaPeR Minecraft is creative, it can teach you a lot about life lessons you just have to find them out and teach them to your children. I will actually teach my children how to play games.
I understand what you are doing. I know how people are saying that this isn't productive, but we must remember that these children are not in high school... They are in second grade. This is not trying to teach them math and whatnot. It is trying to teach them to work together and be polite. With the proper Redstone engineering he could make a pretty decent puzzle too. Well done Joel. You have my full support and I hope your efforts succeed!
@KohNahMee No, math is not useless, because you wont know how to use a calculator, unless you know what each sign, symbol, and equation work. And there are lots of equations that cant be done on a calculator.
And saying that English is useless... Thats about the most illogical thing I have ever heard.
@pretzelking85 It's LAN. Aka, only those computers are wired to it manually. If you want a MinecraftTeachr server, go to the site. No, you won't be using the same map as classes, but it is the teacher's server.
Just watch. In two weeks these kids will be so pro, that they will be figuring out how to make clocks using redstone, or even how to break the game itself.
Hey, I was thinking about asking my computer teacher this year about using minecraft. What I want to know is exactly how do you have minecraft on every computer? Do you have to buy it for each one?
cool teaching through minecraft ..i like it (SUB) all the students will focus on it cuz its a game but not killing games its about living in forest,deserts,etc.. COOL!
i wish i could have played videogames in 2nd grade... then again, i don't think legend of zelda or super mario 64 would have been productive towards learning. :)
my brother is in grade 4 and he is pretty much a expert at minecraft, i showed him these videos and he says he wants to go to this school and kick grade 2 ass.
Oh man, imagine those kids growing up some day, watching these videos and being all like "oh my god, my childhood". I know for sure I'd be pretty pleased.
Also, using Minecraft as a teaching basis is a pretty nifty idea, quite interesting to reflect on all the different things you can actually teach kids with a sandbox legoesque game like this; with some little tweaks, MC sure can be really pedagogically valuable. Oh, and kudos for being such a good teacher.
@progmetalfan1 he's teaching mostly how to play, because the game does not yet have a fullfledged tutorial. :P plus, second graders do not always have the "smarts" to go to minecraft wiki and work things out on their own. this is a great thing he's doing. and a major positive boost to parents views on games.
It must be good to know that when these kids grow up, you will be remembered as their favourite teacher of all time. I think it would be impossible to leave your classes with any thought but that.
This is a great idea. I'd like to suggest that you rethink how you present the gender assignments. My daughter very clearly and very early identified as a boy, not a girl, and she would have been VERY uncomfortable with the expectation that she play as a girl. Kids should be allowed to have the choice to play any gender they like.
That said, I HATE that my Minecraft character sounds like a man.
@t0xicl0gic You know it's funny. I almost always announce it differently. I usually say "If you want to appear as a girl, sit at an even number.... etc." But for some reason I didn't in the video. And in practice, the kids are usually much more interested in sitting next to their friends. They usually don't even think about the gender.
@t0xicl0gic there was a really early The Shaft episode where Notch said He will add the different gender sounds (I also want language changes so all the stuff can be in dutch or swedish or french)
@t0xicl0gic well you can edit the files to add female sounds... but you'll need to do get some/make some sound files in order to do so... either way depending on your daughters age and if she's the artistic type, you should find a world map thats just flat lands (you can find a lot of them around) and a mod that lets you spawn materials (there are quiet a few of them) i found its a fun way to play a game and be artistic
Could you video more of your gameplay/teaching session, I really like to see those kids mindlessly play and create something in Minecraft. (I'm not a pedo)
I find it amusing watching a group of kids trying to comprehend the world of Minecraft.
@smashbi121 That wouldn't work right. Actually, that may be about accurate (depending on your age). An accurate wish: "I wish that I was in second grade right now".
Minecraft is fun enough when I'm older, but if EVERYthing in it was amazing to me, instead of just the ultra-complex stuff? That would be awesome. I may not be a teacher, but these videos have decided for me: I'm showing teaching my niece to play Minecraft. I'll wait a few years first, let her get used to walking IRL before WASD. :D
This proves there should be left-handed keyboards... are there, man I'm a idiot!
