It's a sign of loyalty to the creed, yes, but also the only way to use the old hidden blade. Altair will eventually come out with a mmodified system at some point, while reorganising the order.

There for in AC2 when Leanardo jokes about chopping of ezios finger he already knows you done need to because ezio gave him the codex page which was constructed by Altair which tells you how to build the new hidden blade design. :) Owned.

It was also a neccessity due to the design of the Hidden Blade prior to Altair becoming Grand Master. As seen in the codex, he talks about how he now see's the need for Assassin's to use poison, and for the cutting of the ring finger to be no longer needed etc. So from then on the blade design was changed so that the removal of the ring finger was not necessary,

@Instantgib2 Barely. I have the first game, this plays at the beginning but with different music, and a very very slight difference in scene placement. What you should have done was use clips from the Revelations trailers videos and mixed them in. Then it might deserve to have Revelations in the name. I'm not trying to be mean, but I know it says Altair remake, I just think it would be better if it had that. But thats just my opinion.
