It's a shame that Alan Simpson, the first speaker, says nothing of substance and spends his entire opening statement making people feel sorry for him. That's not really what this issue needs.

The question on the table is 'Who should pay a little more in or get a little less in order to balance the federal budget?'

The answer is: Americans who have more money than they know what to do with.

Trying to gouge more money out of elderly widows who barely have enough to buy food would be moronic.

If you eliminate said cap, while still holding the current payout schedule, what's there to prevent someone from going to a court and rightfully arguing that since they, during their working years, put $5 million into the federal pension system, while this other person only put $500,000, in the absence of a cap on taxable income, their payout should be drastically higher than the person who only put in $500,000.

Settting the cap at 125000, from what I can tell, was meant to establish a relevant benefits level, to determine the eventual payouts. All incomes taxed at () percentage at () level would be used to determine a payout schedule of ().

The only problem with that would be the question of determining the payout everyone receives moving forward. Last i check, the way that Social Security was supposed to work was that, while one was employed, the federal government would take a fixed percentage of their income so that, in old age, when they weren't working, that income that was taken by the federal government would be then used to subsidize the living of older folks. Basically a federal pension program.
