Yes! This is a vocalization that vents frustration. Cats do this when they see prey that they know they cannot get. If a cat is outside and stalking its prey, it will not likely do this, unless the bird is out of reach. Always amusing!
@peppercar cats do this when seeing birds. they are probably trying to mimic a birds calls in order to lure the bird to flying near the cat so the cat can capture and eat the bird. animal behavior is governed by evolutionary adaptive principals. birds are primary prey for cats. thus it is likely that along the way they have developed all kinds of complex behavioral ways of trying to capture and kill birds.
My Keilo does the same thing, and when you take to him, he doesnt break his focus. :)
