When John Prescott announced that the annual Royal Tournament would be scrapped to save money, he could hardly contain his excitement. He also promised that Labour would bring in a more toned-down military show that was less strident, less nationalistic, and with a more international flavour. They were to prove true to their word. It was called the war In Iraq.
Funny how the government (the Labour party specifically) came into power the first thing they did was axe anything with Royal in it and yet for the past 14 years our entrusted MP's have been fleecing the nation for everything its got not to mention selling us out to those European worms on the mainland!!!
First time this was brought to mind was a documentary by Ian Wooldridge "The Wooldridge View" if I am right. Ever since then I would go to Earls Court to watch those guys perform in that spectacular race. Watching it now here brings back great memories of good times. Fantastic stuff. Great post, thank you
Hey barbiegirl...it's not respect for our troops that needs reviving, they have the country's full respect for what they are doing, it's the government thatt have lost the trust and respect of the british public, it's them that are dumping on our troops, I should know, I've just finished 23 years in the forces...I agree that Earls Court and the Tournament should be revived, the best recruiting opportunity ever.
So the Govt talks about increasing respect for the armed forces, after scraping the Royal Tournament. I remember watching this enthralled as a child- even though i was a girl. It should be revived
I love this race and went many times to see the Gun Carriage race in the 70's 80's as a child, i am really surprised that they decided to scrap this event as what a fantastic tribute it was to the British Armed Forces.
wow i luv how its so co-ordinated must take alot of practice.......Im 21 and am planning on joining up......this makes me want to even more !! I luv the tradition behind the worlds best navy.
Angela Ripon did a documentry for the BBC in 1977 called "Run Gunner Run" showing Devonport in training and also at Earls Court, don't know if it's on dvd though.
I saw this at Earls court in 1997, one of the last before the Royal Tournament was binned.
It was one of the most awesome things I have EVER witnessed. Typical of the government to get rid of probably the best advert for the armed forces. Hats off to all who took part.
Is the field gun race still in existance competitively or is it ust for exhibition purposes. Truly if you get a chance to witness this for real, take it, the video just doesn't do it justice.
