  • Damn! I bet you were still sore on your 27th birthday.

  • well thats one way to get a hernia

  • Dammit Jeff, now I am gonna have to have Adam get us back into heavier DL afterwatching this. Was that him countingin the background?

  • @JTLomo Yeah man. That was Adam sitting in the door step and counting. You guys should get after the pulls again. You don't have to wear yourself out with a ton of pulls close to your max, either. Just build up the frequency and improve your groove with some lighter weights, and make progressive increases when you can. Adam will tell you - he made some decent improvements the summer we were pulling low reps 3-4x per week at ~60-70% (something like a 50 lb gain on his 1RM inside 3 months)

  • Well done. Good strength on low bw. I was tempted to say that this was 15+7+4, and the title should reflet it, but then I realized that you just did a total of 26 reps with my 1RM DL, so I rather keep my mouth shut and congratulate you! :) Also, a 1RM of 300kg at such a low bw is very good. I asume you're natural too, so more respect to you!

  • Amazing stuff! What's your current 1RM? I've pulled 270kg raw at 79kg bw, but I guess I only could've done five or six with 235.

  • @KimBeckGundersen My PR 1RM is 300 kg raw (done all the way back in January, 2008); I did that at 76.5 kg bodyweight. I work very hard to improve my low-rep strength, but by nature, I am much better at feats of strength endurance than those requiring explosive or top end strength. I'm no closer to my goal of 318 kg / 700 lbs than I was 3 years ago, but if I switched training goals, I think I could probably hit 275 kg x 10-15 with my current 1RM.

  • thats is seroius raw strength. Good endurance also!! well done man

  • Christ, you have one gigantic rib cage.

  • thats the most impressive Deadlift vid ive ever seen..that was not only a 3X bw dead the form is just impeccible and for so many flawless reps. my hat is off to you you are an inspiration Jeff..

    Respect ,

    James

  • @frillylizzard Thank you! I appreciate the compliment. If you have not seen them, I'm fairly partial to Konstantin Konstantinovs training videos, myself.

  • What the flying fuck, damn thats some great work.

  • impressive...and the results are evident. I take it you're into powerlifting, not competitive bodybuilding? Regardless, good to see someone right here in MD making these kinds of accomplishments...whew!!

  • amazing!

  • Gets a little repetitive after the first one.

  • Sick lift! Your build is perfect for deadlifts, long arms, short legs huh?

    Anyway amazing strenght!

  • yes! I think it is a youtube best by far! I have never seen anything even remotly close to this. That was AWSOME!!! Great job. Would you give us some advice like, top 5 things to increase your deadlift. That would be very helpful!

  • @qlkgg7 My top 5:

    1) Be patient. You can continue to improve your deadlift for a long time if you train progressively, cycle back, and avoid injuries.

    2) Practice technique. Frequently drilling technique with a light/no weight can really help. Foot placement and breathing can make a big difference.

    3) Train your weaknesses. As you correct weaknesses, your optimal technique may change, also; identify new weaknesses and adjust accordingly.

    4) Patience! It's really that important.

    5) Pull hard.

  • yo jeff you have any experiance with Haltings and rack pulls? my coach thinks I should sub DL's and alternate those as the heavy pull for the week...

  • @fataslin I've messed around with both training techniques in the past, but found them to be very ineffective. They just didn't help me where I needed it. Your mileage may vary, however. I know folks with different strengths/biomechanics who've gotten great training effect from partial lifts and I know other folks who swear by halted lifts for technical improvement. Is there are a reason your coach is asking you to make the substitution? Is it for just one week, or more? Context is everything.

  • @pantslessJeff Hey, thanks for replying. He thinks a week is too short for me to recover from. I'm up to 210kg's, been stuck on it for the past 4 weeks... Tried it again today and failed horribly, only got 3 reps, after getting all 5 last week, but I was taking too longer breaks between reps for me to pass myself. Started adding first in 5kg increments until about 195kg and then in 2.5's until I've stalled at 210, its my first stall. I'm 6'1 and 230lbs about 20%BF. He wants me to permanantly sub

  • Good job! What do you think of the deadlift as an overall body developer? Has it made you strong all over? Some have called it the "King of all Exercises".....what do you think?

  • @khalsasikh Deadlifts are great and definitely let me maintain a pretty high level of overall strength & development, even if I'm not doing any other training. I'm not sure I'd go quite so far as to call them the "King of all Exercises" though. I think for most people, the full squat or a properly performed clean & jerk can equal or surpass the deadlift as a standalone.

I watched your video swinging the meels--very cool. I'm kind of a hack with them, but I really like heavy clubs.

  • @pantslessJeff Thanks for the response. How often do you deadlift heavy? Can I do it 2 or 3 times a week without overtraining. Some sources say only once a week, but I don't really believe that. What is your opinion?

  • @khalsasikh I can't deadlift "heavy" all that often; I usually don't pull over 80% more than once every 7-8 days. Keep in mind that I'm not a very large person, and my 1RM is 300kg, so 80% is still a substantial amount of strain on my structure. By contrast, back when my 1RM was ~500, I could pull at 90% 3x per week with no ill-effect. Really, you just have to be sensitive to your body's training response and do what works for you.

  • @pantslessJeff Good point..........my 1RM right now is probably about just over 400 pounds. I have only been deadlifting about 2 weeks. I weigh about 200, so I guess I could build myself up more and lift several times a week until my poundages increase significantly. I use the double overhand grip to prevent bicep tears and to keep the poundages relatively low. Thanks for all the advice. I hope you reach all your goals.

  • Crazy Jeff, that's bloody incredible!

  • @ewanmethane Thanks Rob! Guys like you keep making YouTube stronger, and I'm just trying to keep up.

  • Awesome!

  • Amazing lift dude. Thanks a lot for making me feel like a weak fat piece of s##t. Off to the gym to go deadlift and then cry some.

  • I want your babies

  • Jesus! And here I was being proud of 465 @ 165. What's your 1RM?

  • @frootlups I've pulled 660 @ 168. That was back in early 2008. I've been chasing 700 ever since; the hips, legs, lower back, grip, and neck are there, but my upper back and upper chest still need to get stronger to support the weight without injury.

465 @ 165 is very good. I remember the first time I pulled 462 @ ~155-157; I was very proud. It was just as tough as the first time I pulled 500, 600, or 660 (just less painful, and it required less recovery).

  • @pantslessJeff That's interesting to hear. You're less than 140 pounds away from a WR... think you've got it in you? I find it strange how much the deadlift doesn't correspond to 1RM calculations (much less so than other lifts).

How long did it take you to get to where you are? I started out with 225x5 exactly a year ago, and was doing 275x5 by the end of July '09. Essentially doubled in a year.

  • @frootlups Honestly, at this point an inch is a mile. Kutchner's 793 seems insurmountable--it'd be a 20% increase! That's not to say I'm not gunning for an 800 pull, but if I have anything close to that in me, I'll be as surprised as anyone. I would take 700 for the time being. My repping ability (on all lifts) is far better than my 1RM ability though; that's just the way I've always been. In a parallel universe, I'd probably pull 600x20 before I make 700x1 in this one.

  • @pantslessJeff Rick Gaugler's 714 raw world-record at 165 is something I'd be shooting for if I were you. You realize you're only 54 pounds away...? Less than ten percent. Quite a first-time pull, too. My back would've rounded, but I had virtually no muscle mass when I started lifting.

  • @frootlups Forgot to add: I've been lifting for 11 years, 3 months. I started deadlifting 10 years, 10 months ago. I trap-bar deadlifted 335 @ 120 the first time I ever pulled. I didn't think anything of it; I just wanted to do shrugs with the same weight as the "strong" kids in my high school and I had to stand up with it first. I was already doing lots of bodyweight jump squats/partner pick-up drills/pull-ups for wrestling at that point, though.

  • how tall are you?.. just out of curiosity sense i'm practically the same weight and this is blowing my mind.

  • @goofy775 I'm 5'6 3/8" <-- Us short guys have to keep track of the change.

  • lol I thought my video of 315x15 was good. BRB, killing myself
