I dont know much about pagaents but is the winner based on the overall standings? so even if you you do really well in like the interview but you dont do that well in swimsuit or evening gown you might not win?

@pacovalls How in the heck did you come up with that? She received salaries as Miss USA and as Miss Universe. The Miss USA runner up received the remainder of the salary that was left on Miss USA's contract. But Miss USA received all of her salaries for both titles.
la realida de este concurso es que la ganadora (unicamente por la respuesta) era la chica de india, pero era bastante fea, a parte de que era quien entregaba la corona. La chava que ganaria era Canada, pero su respuesta no fue nada acertada. Ante esto no les quedo mas que darle la corona a la simple de USA. Su triunfo fue circunstancial, le dieron la corona porque la canadiense no respondio bien.

India is HORRIBLE!!!! Miss USA is not Miss Universe material: she looks nice but she is not specially beautiful, elegant or smart. Miss Canada, nothing special. Venezuela, El Salvador, Puerto Rico or Trinidad and Tobago were further beautiful than the top 3 delegates.
India is a classic beauty with grea features, and she has a great personality and brains to match, her command over her language is awesome. the ranking was perfect, as chelsi deserved and manpreet was the second best .

miss canada reminds me of how miriam quaimbao miss philippines universe 1999 almost got the crown but choked in the final answer. she definitely almost got it, and the crowd loved her. she got the most applause when called for the one final look.
Lana (Canada) did an adequate job with her final answer. She deserved to be MU because the final answer is taken into account with the swimsuit, evening gown and previous interviews. USA was not exceptional in her interview to justify her triumph and she certainly was not better than Canada in swimsuit and evening gown. India was OVERSCORED!
Miriam was fine but lost her train of thought and Mpule stole her thunder with a well-received and popular response. Her victory was justified.
i luv lana, im canadian myself and wish she had won. her delivery wasn't very good..i wish she had just said education but when she included about taking master's, she had lost it.

I remember watching this pageant and thinking that Manpreet wasn't as pretty as 1994's Miss India/Miss Universe. But as the night went on, Manpreet's dignified intelligence and grace won me over. Even though she wasn't the prettiest of the night, she by far made it up in her answers. Most intelligent Miss U contestant ever.
Totally agree with this comment - she was not conventionally beautiful in the way most MU contestants are, but as the comp progressed, her personality and intelligence shone through and she rose in my estimation. I esp liked the quote about not letting people walk all over you - still use that quote today.

I think Miss Universe doesn't work like Miss World. No country until now has won the crown twice in a row. Brooke won the contest in 1997 after Chelsea in 1995. India was definitely the first choice, but its conditional for Miss Universe contestants that they cannot win if a winner from the country had won the title the previous year.
Miss India was too smart to be standing next to the other two ladies. When it came to substance, Manpreet was in a league of her own and not even Lana's pretty face or Chelsi's articulate pageant patty answers come close in my books. I have a feeling Chelsi's biracial background is what clinched her the crown...after all, the pageant was hosted in South Africa. Seems symbolic.
The pageant was held in Namibia,not South Africa. Also. if y ou listen to the host, Bob Goen, right before the judges vote, he said that te vote takes into account the answer to the final question and the overall impression of the contestant in the competiton that evening and that they were voting based on who they thought would make the best Miss Universe. If they had voted solely on the final question it would have gone to India.
Probably will go down in MU history as one of the worst top 3 ever. Miss Canada seemed very nervous and her answer was not fluid. Miss USA benefited from the weaker competition.

Chelsea was certainly not the most beautiful and there was really not much to choose from among those last 3; not the most eye catching finalists ever in the miss universe - however, the three of them seem very intelligent and articulate, which is representaive of global beauty. Well deserved. The pageant has developed from picking the most beautiful to the most intelligent, the girls are often both, which makes the job of picking 1 the most difficult task without being byassed (or so we hope).
India should have won. Her answer was great and heartily. beside she was the first to answer it and she done it with such grace. She deserves that crown.
Canada may have taken the crown had it not been for her final answer. Anyone else agree?

Canada and Colombia were the best. Clearly the most well-rounded.
Venezuela was gorgeous when she won Miss Venezuela but at MU the styling was off.
Spain and Russia should have been in the Top 10. Take a look at the preliminaries and parade of nations and you will see what I mean.
I have nothing against Chelsie Smith of USA but she should not have won. Cute but not spectacular. Smart but not amazing and intelligent.
India was like a motivational speaker not a MU contestant.

Chelsea was certainly not the most beautiful and there was really not much to choose from among those last 3; not the most eye catching finalists ever in the miss universe - however, the three of them seem very intelligent and articulate, which is representaive of global beauty. Well deserved. The pageant has developed from picking the most beautiful to the most intelligent, the girls are often both, which makes the job of picking 1 the most difficult task without being byassed (or so we hope).

India should have won. Her answer was great and heartily. beside she was the first to answer it and she done it with such grace. She deserves that crown.
