Look, I'm not saying that JM is a bad guitarist, but a big part of having a solo carreer as guitarist is being able to write good songs. all his songs have pretty much the same thought behind the lyrics, just as millions of other songs have that same thought. If you look at Jimi Hendrix for instance, there's allot more difference in the subjects of his songs.

Well, I've listened to these songs, and I have to say I am somewhat surprised. You can truly see that JM has done some work to disguise the true meaning of some of the songs, and makes you believe he means the exact opposite. War of my live however was a misfit, since I couldn't find any deeper meaning, but that could be me. But after all, I still think that he isn't any good in writing lyrics. His chose of words is poor, which leaves his total lyrical work there too.

The thing about Mayer that people don't realize is he can play with the best in terms of just outright shredding on guitar. But, he himself has said on multiple occasions he doesn't want to do that and he doesn't get satisfaction from that anymore. At this point in his life he likes the little nuances and feel of playing and leaving some tricks left in his bag.

Here are my thoughts:

1) The note does seem rather out of place. Also, he does sort of chuckle when he makes mistakes (YES, even John Mayer makes mistakes; don't get me wrong, he's still my favorite musician). For evidence of this, check out "John Mayer - The Story of The Black One (2/2)" and listen from 6:35-6:45ish. Finally, at the end of the video you can hear John say "That was a little..."; maybe he was going to say rough? Sloppy?

2) However, we have to remember that this is a man who took No Such Thing off of the setlist for Where The Light Is simply because the band slipped up in some places. Given that information, it's hard to believe that he would personally upload a video with a mistake in it.

3) Maybe he did hit the note unintentionally, but after listening to it thought it sounded unique and actually fit? I'm not sure...those are three possible theories. Feel free to weigh in further.

@puchalaka Looks like it appears about 0:28 into the video... And he definitely has it inside his hand. I have heard somewhere that it is in his palm, resting between the bent fingers. I am practicing the switching between plucking and using a pick. The fingerplucking with the pick in your palm is not that hard actually. It's the actual transition that is difficult to make sound natural :)

@willraz Not to rip on your line 6, but if you want that type of tone, you're going to need a decent tube amp, at the least. He is playing through a top of the line two rock custom amp. I had a line 6 for about a month that I bought from Guitar Center and I couldn't stand it, not warm at all, bland sounding. Pick yourself up a Fender Blues Jr., or something similar, and that should get you started down the right road. Crank up that reverb, and then work on your touch.

I have never heard anyone play guitar with this much feel, this good tone, the subtle nuances of every note. I have listened to SRV, Clapton, hendrix, even to newer guitarists like Derek Trucks and Joe Bonamassa. The list is long, and there are a lot of guitarists who can play more consistently solid than JM, or faster than JM, but JM at his best is absolutely as good as it gets.
