Thanks for the pulp mill and all the other shite you are doing, Peter Garrett, former lead singer of Midnight Oil. Now you are Australia's 'Minister for the Environment' and many once-devoted people have given up on you. Facebook has a group called 'Peter Garrett is Australia's most disappointing man', and 'Peter Garrett is an environmental sell-out!' and I've joined both groups. So many people had faith in you. Sad.
What a song!! The Rage of the punkband they used to be, the Sound of the Rockband they were and the Message of the world citizens they became.. What a stunning combination..
When they came to Kalamazoo, Michigan for a concert Peter seen a young person in the front and basically stopped the show to make sure she had protection for her ears. What a class act.
Peter Garrett of Australia's Labor Party... You alway kinda knew that this guy was going to be a politician as his lyrics were laden with political overtones. Fantastic Band always loved them.
I am so glad to know he does as he says. Several frontmen from bands that took a stand in that time are corporate top execs now, their bands of course among the lousiest by then. That's a disgusting way to compensate artistic failure I reckon.
Not the case with the dearest Midnight Oil. Greetings from Barcelona, Spain.
many years ago, the German punkrock band Die Toten Hosen used this sond (among others) on their "opening the doors" tape. That s the songs that are played when the concert hall doors open for the audience to come in - brings back memories! The refrain is really catchy...:-)
This is my favorite Midnight Oil song by far. Native Americans and African Americans can also empathize with the message of this song to a great degree. "we carry in our hearts the true country and that cannot be stolen , we follow in the steps of our ancestory and that cannot be broken" ....I love that part.
Midnight Oil forever ROCKS! I didn't know the lead vocals actually preaches his own words/music. He's actually a Aussie politician now - well I guess since 2002? I haven't kept in touch with MO I have to admit. More power to Peter G!! Make a difference man!
Well, whoever said that whites treat whites like shit, should be well that most of the textbooks of our country are still written in a Eurocentric point of view( at least they stopped that ludicrous Colombus story). Shouldn't that symbolize how whites disregarded other people?
Awesome, I recently learned of this great band, and the more I listen to them, the more I wish they were from America(I live in the State of New Jersey).
If we don't learn from the exploitation of aboriginal people around the world, we'll be victims ourselves. We're letting multinational corporations and accquiescent governments steal our children's birthright.
If any thing's white on white has been happen for many many years till to this very day so reguardless of what people wish too think the problem still faceing todays society is on a much larger scale.
From studieing and exciteding in My historie lesson's all I can say is I emphasise with every race the roman's n english effect however this is what non white people dont understan.
White has been treating white's like shit hundred's of year's befor they advanced toward those of othere color..
white man understands infact alot of us understand alot more then u relise, And You honestly don't think that atleast a minute of us feel like shit due toot he things were'v done? O.o
Released in late 1986. Went Number One, without this Video. It hadn't been made. By the the time it had been made, The Dead Heart was exiting the Top 10. How many bands these days could claim that? The power of the Oils in the 80's.
i love midnight oil but i cant take them seriously. i mean does peter garret not realise he is white? why does he sing like he's about to vomit? and after like.. 20 years, you'd think he'd find other things to bitch about besides uranium and aborigines, right?
Say you so? My grandfather was taught shame. We don't know our tribe because at the time he was born it was a shameful thing to have Native American ancestry. And yet, except for the "one drop" law I am white, since he was 1/4 Native American. Maybe you need to open your mind some more and see there will be people from all walks who realize what is truly right and act on it.
the true target were Australian Aboriginals not native american indians. (Midnight oil constantly supported aboriginal rights through most of their songs)

I tnink the singer Peter Gareth is a politician now for Australia. I see him on BBC last week.
He is fighting for the environment, but sadly is in a losing battle.
From what I know of his music and politics, he has a strong social conscience and is a good guy who will propbably fail due to idealism.
Sad for him.
