  • Great arrangement of a great song with the great Frankie Laine. See how many times "great" appeared in the sentence? Add -- great post, too. :)

  • Stoned in the late '60s i found this lp in my dad's collection. i thought it was so corny looking i put it on for a laugh. well for over 40yrs. i can say rockin' is one of my fav records ever. frankie is my favorite saloon singer. never get tired of his take on these tunes...:0)

  • "I guess you don't have what I asked for! This is not ' Dance Gypsy, dance gypsy, laugh and romance gypsy. Cry gypsy, Fly gypsy, break every rule?"

  • @Grifiki Naturally this is not "Dance Gypsy, Dance. Which by the way the name of the song is "FLAMENCO" not

Dance Gypsy Dance which is part of the words in the song. Take another look I have it on You Tube

  • A sensational version of a sensational song! Makes you want to fall in love over and over again every time you listen to it!

  • This song came out not long before I was born. My mother told me she chose my name because of this song. I bought it off of iTunes and will now share it on facebook for my family and friends. Thanks for posting this, both the singer and song are fabulous!

  • @ShereeBix I have heard from many people that this is the song they fell in love too. Most are people even older than I am who fell in love way back wth the orginal in 1947 but I've also heard from some who were Teens in 1957 and discovered this version. I think it's great anytime.

  • The YT vid of him doing this song at age 92 is amazing. What a one of a kind voice!

  • @seymourbbest Yes his voice was still strong at 92 but I thought the way they dressed him up in that Dam Pink Outfit and hat was a discrace. I don't know what they were thinking puting him on display like that. His health had deterated a lot over the last few years of his life, I had seen him on his 89th birthday and he looked good for his age. I know he wanted to perform and did a great job doing so, It's that dam Pink suite they dressed him up end I object to.

  • @markalson1938 He had recently had a stroke before that performance (which would ultimately be his final swan song, his last performance ever). That's why he needed assistance walking out to the microphone, and his voice wasn't as strong as it once was (but hey, he was 92 friggin' years old! Give the guy a break!), but bless his heart for coming out of retirement to give us that one last magnificent performance before saying goodbye.

  • You could tell by the reaction and emotion on his face how humbled and appreciative he was at the response and ovation the audience gave him. He felt truly blessed.

  • Such a sensuous voice

  • This was my Mom & Dad's song, 63 years ago today they danced to this song at there

wedding. It was there first dance as husband & wife!!! I know that are up there dancing to it now!!!!

  • @waynsgirl3156 I have got many e-mails from fans who say that they fell in love to music of Frankie Laine. He seemed to have a effect on anyone who heard him sing. Not many could make that statement.

  • Beautiful!

  • I've been a fan of Frankie Laine for 60 years but somehow lost touch with him. My recent reaquaintance with him has been so nostalgic and has brought back many many fond and indeed teary memories. Frankie you were and still are the greatest.

  • Oh.my.goodness ... to hear that magnificent voice brings tears to my eyes! My brothers and I loved Frankie Laine! Other generations don't know what they have missed. No one could deliver a song like Frankie Laine! Thanks for posting this!!!

  • Many thanks for this! Frankie was the BEST...and sadly the garbage out today, does not hold a candle to what was music of the 50's...the last decade for music greats...LONG LIVE the sound of FRANKIE LANE!

  • Awesome for giving a full explanation regarding this not being his original hit version. So many folks post various re-records and mislead new fans. For me, Laine's original recording is best, but I am glad to have heard this and glad that you were so diligent in educating the unfamilar. Excellent.

  • I dreamt about this song for weeks and couldn't figure out the singer. I just figured it out this morning when I woke up at 5 AM. Thanks for posting this. Memories....that's what this song brings back.

  • Frankies signature song, but everything hid did had his own unique style. He was the featured singer at our high school prom, we went around all day trying to imitate him. 10 Stars...............

  • @joeasmythe A lot of people tried to imitate Frankie but no one could and they never will he was a one of a kind

and we will never see another one.

  • Ask any one over seventy and i can bet my bottom dollar they all knew of him and remember is songs , he was the real Mr Rhythm.

  • I haven't heard much of Frankie Laine but i believe I am now a fan. Thank you for posting this.

  • @ariesviolent I checked your age and it's no wonder that you hadn't heard much about Frankie Laine. He was a star singer in the late forties through the sixties right up there with Crosby, Como, Sinatra, or Cole. But after his hit making days were over the media radio stations seemed to forget him. The new singers couldn't match his style so

they acted like he never existed. But his true fans have always remembered him, welcome to the club.

  • @markalson1938 Actually, that's where I'm surprised. I was raised by my grandparents to the sounds of Crosby, Como, and Sinatra. Some how Frankie Laine must have slipped by or I never took notice. Either way, thank you. I've been listening to Mr. Laine non stop since hearing this song.

  • After finding him on you tube I went right over to Amazon and ordered 3 of the great mans cds. Labelled as one of the belters, described as a rhythm and blues singer with jazz and country and western overtones, That's my Desire being his first hit record, (gold). I also belief this to be the best version and his finest recording, ever

  • Love Frankied Lane !!!

  • Happy Birthday Juliaflo

  • I am so proud to share my birthday with Mr. Laine.

  • Great song and Frankie you the best. Now you are singing

for the angel's rest in peace.

  • What a unique voice and what wonderful songs. Hope they go on forever

  • What a sensational voice! And hearing him sing at 92 years old, still having a voice is absolutely amazing!

  • Damn, what a singer! Wasn't it great that we had him into his '90's?

Here's some personal trivia: Around 1950, FL was hurting financially. Perry Como gave him a significant amount of money with the provision that FL never pay it back. Classy guys!

  • Your time frame is a little wrong. Perry loaned Frankie money several times in the early forties

when Frankie was really down and out. They had been friends since the late thirties. In 1947 When Frankie hit it big with "That's My Desire" his first royalty check was for $36,000. A big sum in those days. Frankie owed his friends a total of $8,000. He paid everyone back but for Perry who would not take it. But it was a running joke the rest of their lives.

    hit it big

  • I now remember the story. Do you know if FL was a gambler?

PC was probably the cleanest performer who ever lived. I believe he was married for 70 years.

  • I guess I have read almost every thing ever written on Frankie and I have met Frankie several

times, once in Vegas. I have never heard anyone say that Frankie had a gambling problem. I'm sure that while playing Vegas he put some money in the slots but who dosn't.

He was married to his first wife, Nan Grey, for 43 years. He married late in life at the age of 37 in 1950 and it lasted till her death on her 75th birthday in 1993.

He married his 2d wife Marcia in the late 90's..

  • You are a font of information. I thrive on trivia so feel free to share such data with me at any time.

Here's something for you: Bob Hope and Bing Crosby did not like one another per Jerry Lewis who was a mutual friend. Hope's son, Tony, was on my intramural basketball team at Georgetown in the early '60's. He was so not taken with his wealth and he dressed like a waif.

  • This is the first I ever heard that Bob and Bing didn't like each other. They were suppose to have been best friends since the thirties. How could they have made those "Road" movies in the

forties or apear several times on each others TV shows in the fifties? It wasn't because eather of them needed the money.

  • thanx for the info on a truely wonderful singer and entertainer,"that's my desire" is probably my favourite track from a huge repatoire.although i have just turned 50yrs old i never tire of listening to that rich voice. and i also agree with you that this arrangement is without doubt the best.

  • @markalson1938 Just read the comment about FL being a "gambler". As a young man in the 40's my father ran a "gambling establishment" . After he married my mother, he got into a more legal occupation (smile). He was a man of integrity and principle and loved gambling...didn't mean he was bad. So I agree with you. It appears that frankieheartsful enjoys putting out negative things on people...that aren't true.

  • @edb081904 The only thing I ever heard that Frankie Gambled on was Golf. He won a large Pot on a new Comer named of Jean Littler in 1956. He even mentined this in one of his Gambling songs he recorded in the early 60's. Mabe this album is why some people think he was a gambler.

  • Frankie sang this at his last ever appearance at the age of 92,there will never be any better performer, god bless you Frankie

  • pure luxury listen him********

  • frankie laine was my favourite singer of all makimg memories was what he was all about, my wife & i fell in love listening to him, my wife eunice died 2 years ago & this song breaks my heart

  • II'm sorry if this song brings up sad memories of a lost love. I know many couples fell in love to this song it was the ultimate love song.

  • Love this man! My favorite singer of all time! Saw him in person on stage and will never forget it! Thanks for sharing!

  • One of the greatest of all time, for a rarer softer version try Sammy Kaye's Don Cornell version.

  • Herb Jeffries, Frankie Laine, Kay Armen all shared this in common, performing well into their years -- and sounding good! For some reason, though, this doesn't sound like the version I'm most familiar with.

  • It's not the version that was the big hit. That one was recorded in 1946 . This is from his 1957 album "Rockin' " with Paul Weston's Orchestra behind him. I think this version is the best, but that's just me.

If you hear frankie on his "Wheels" CD which he made well into his eighties you can hear he still has it. He may not have been able to hit the high notes he once did, but who at that age could.

  • Thanks! I knew something wasn't there. The 1946 version still is my pick. This great one was pretty good with the jazz genre, which I'm sure you know. Laine will always be one of my favorites.

  • It's just a matter a taste, if you are a Jazz Lover then you would prefer the older version. But like me if you prefer the big band arrangements of Paul Weston then the 1957 is more to your liking. I like them all even the 1958 and the 1970 recordings. But this is my favorite.

  • Primeira gravação,da década de 1940, deste estupendo cantor norte americano, descendente de italianos. É simplesmente fantástica. Faz um grande bem ouví-la.

  • I agree with you I think this is the best arrangement of this song as well.....Thanks for sharing

  • No this version is not the Single that was done in

1958. I have that version on YouTube also. Frankie tried to do for "Desire" what Tommy Edwards did for "It's All In The Game" They gave it a more modern arrangment with a choris and everything. It didn't work.

  • Thanks for posting...but I'm with you...it didn't work...

  • Columbia released "That's My Desire" as a single in February '59....probably this take.

  • Fantastic. Superb. Fabulous.

  • I recently saw a movie with Mr. Laine (and Billy Daniels). This led me to read both of their bios on Wikipedia, and ignited my interest in the song (My Desire) that "started it all" for him. My sincere thanks to you Markalson1938 for making my "research" complete. It was and is indeed a fine rendition.

  • You have to be careful about what you read on Wilkipedia. It's full of mistakes. It said that Nan Grey was Frankie's second wife when she was his first. But most of the story on Frankie was

    accurate.

  • I agree with you about Wikipedia. I have contested some of their stuff and they made changes (upon proof of my "source"). I am glad though, that even with all their faults, they gave me some (immediate) insight into Mr. Laine, and that after reading the hype about that one song, you had kindly posted it. Thanks again.

  • i named my first daughter sheri because it was my husbands favorite song

  • That is a nice name for a daughter, Did you ever hear the recording Frankie made in 1950 titled

    "Cheri, I Love You" ?

  • This is a good version, though I have to say that James Brown version of this song from the album "Soul on Top" is incredible. You should check it out

  • NICE NICE VERSION!

  • Mark, thanks again for bringing these classics to us, you are much appreciated/Alan UK

  • Guys!!! If you don't score with this as background, you NEVER will

  • The ultimate version.

    Incredible!

    Magnificent!
