I like the original better, too. Not that there's anything wrong with this version, I like jazz, I just personally don't much care for when the orchestras get too "nightclubby-brassy-blasty". I'll stick with my original 1955 RCA 78.
This version seems very laid-back. Softer, jazzier, and somewhat lackluster (compared to the original recording). The earlier RCA cut is forceful and dynamic, driving, almost like a Broadway show arrangenment. Her vocal here on this one is timid, less energetic, more akin to schmaltzy "club music".
I love Marty Paiche's work..he did a beautiful album with Ann Margret-one of her first.
However, I think Jaye needed Hugo Winterhalter's driving arrangements...especially on this song..Winterhalter almost has a counter melody going with his arrangement.
I think both arrangements are top notch, but would have preferred Marty's arrangement on a cover version with another vocalist.
It's interesting to compare the two versions. I had never heard this one before now, but am very familiar with the original. The tempo on this one is definitely slower, and it is definitely more "jazzy" with Ms. Morgan singing in a mellower tone than on the first recording.
Jaye P. is terrific. This song is on Sepia Records upcoming album (Sept. 2009) -- "Lets Fall in Love with Jaye P. Morgan." ... Looks like it's gonna be a great album of Jaye P.'s music. THANKS for posting this song -- one of my all-time favs.
I was completely unaware of the CD release your referencing.. looked it up on amazon and I have to say I'm pleased with the selections. Many of the tracks included have not seen the light of day since their initial release! I have posted several of the selections from my own collection. Thanks for keeping me in the loop!
Sometime in the 1980s on a Music of Your Life radio station I heard this song for the first time about 30 years after its original release and found it to be just so beautiful. Easily her best work. Thanks for posting it, but the original is so much better and well worth listening to if you can find it.
Thanks so much for commenting. The original recording JP did in 1955 is readily available/remastered on CD, and you're right it is easily one of her best works. However I disagree about the original being better. I think both versions are superb in their own way.

@mdffyx I'm with you, mdffyx. That original was head and shoulders above this version.

Pity the RCA version isn't as evident here.

I like it! The Marty Paich arrangement is to brass what Hugo Winterhalter's was to strings.
