Without addressing that example, he would not have been able to make the point go through as well. Think of it this way: A group of people decided that they were different from another group of people so they labeled them as lower than themselves.

I have never been big on 'classifications'. We can all see with our own eyes our differences and commonalities. I tend to think that the differences we take note of are mostly culture and experience. Skin color is also captivating if you're not used to a tone drastically different than your own. It's our perceptions that make the difference in our interaction; one sees difference and either thinks 'not one of my kind' or 'wow, who is this person'.

Interesting how Olmos, after stating that "race" should never be used goes on to blame the "Caucasian race" for the concept of "race" even emphasizing to make his point. If we're all humans and there is no race than you can't blame conditions on one group (one race). If you can then what's the point? What's the point of saying there is "no race" but anybody with white skin, brown skin etc is typed? What's the point if you're still going to judge and characterize?

@Xelanderthomas It's just a relevant example. There is no perfect way to bring up the issue, but you have to give it some leeway in order for it to be understood. Without addressing that example, he would not have been able to make the point go through as well. Think of it this way: A group of people decided that they were different from another group of people so they labeled them as lower than themselves.

@Bionicraft1 I understand your logic, however I don't agree that that's the only or the best way to handle it. And believe it subconsciously undermines the whole argument imo. The fact is that people of the same color, ethnicity etc do in fact kill each other so with or without the race division - just ask the people of Rwanda. Don't get me wrong, I like Olmos and it's good to see what they are doing. But I think he should be a little more careful in his wording and not fall in. pax

His point was that using the word "race" to describe cultures is stupid. He used it himself probably to emphasize how stupid it was. Of course, he wasn't really blaming a race, because as you said, if there's only one race, the statement makes no sense. He was blaming a culture. I think he's wrong about the time period though, the crusades all predate the date he gave, and they're a great example of exactly what he's talking about.

@Xelanderthomas Note the change in tone while he speaks out the word "race" which is supposed to emphasize the fact that the Caucasian "race" wanted to be distinguished from other people by having a different skin color. Its like saying someone wanted to find a reason to make the term "race" relevant.

A group of Men a long time ago, felt bad enough about themselves to make an exclusive label. Also, when he said race, he exaggerated it. Implying that the term is ad hoc rubbish.

At any you follow my logic or you don't. Again, I like Olmos, always have but we don't have to kiss the ass of our cultural heroes - I just don't agree with that particular way he expressed those ideas. I don't think it's a forward moving or effect as you seem to think.

@Xelanderthomas The guy is an entertainer, adept at driving passion and life into people. He said it that way because it sounds conflicted, and therefore interesting and powerful. Trivia and challenge can make a speech brilliant as opposed to good. The way I said it is boring, and not very entertaining.And whats wrong with the way he said it? You understood the point, and I don't think anyone will misunderstand. Unless you disagree.

@HitomiAyumu look at my site. I'm an entertainer as well. Sometimes over the top. I just don't agree in this particular instance with his approach. In my lowly opinion in the conversation about abolishing the concept of race it would be more powerful to not acknowledge any of our established racial criteria that feed into ( like it or not) a deep rooted pathology that effects all of - no matter what color- we live and define each other by that... that's all. But don't worry, I bow to Olmos.

We are all one people and one RACE, the fact is that over time we spread out across the globe and some peoples skin darkened to adapt to the environment while others skin took a lighter tone, some people grew tall while others shortened.
But past those minute differences we are all still one people, one species and one race.
People who still use those small differences as a means to justify bigotry and violence, they don't deserve to be in OUR race.

Yes, there certainly differences in dogs, different breeds; poodle, german shepard etc, but a dog is dog is a dog...you cannot deny "any" dog it's doghood - you're not going to look at dog and call it a cat because it's different from another dog.

Oddly, it is anthropologically accurate. If you look at the genetic makeup of the populations of all regions of the globe, there are many more similarities than differences. Also, the differences that are seen can be easily explained by migration patterns, etc. What is even more astounding is that there are more profound genetic differences between those classified as belonging to a single 'racr' than there is between 'races'.

@DiVeronica you must not listen very well....his example was taken out of context....his point to use Caucasians using race to differentiate themselves above another ethnic group is well documented in history....I know what my ancestors did and it's nothing to be proud of but that is in the past lets move on. He did indicate that there are different cultures (another way of say ethnicity) and that all those ethnic groups are "human"...so what is your point???

Once again yes there is a race...the human "race" my wife and I also despise the term interracial marriage...I didn't marry a Romulan I married a human being from another culture. I have never been big on 'classifications'. We can all see with our own eyes our differences and commonalities. I tend to think that the differences we take note of are mostly culture and experience. Skin color is also captivating if you're not used to a tone drastically different than your own. It's our perceptions that make the difference in our interaction; one sees difference and either thinks 'not one of my kind' or 'wow, who is this person'.

@GhostToasterr This is true, but skeletal differences would show if one is asian or caucasian. That's why after digging up some long-dead murder victim, anthropologists can try and figure out what race (or whatever the "P.C" term is?) and gender they were.
But on the other hand "Race" and "Culture" are not necesarilly synonymous. I'm just as much a "Pacific Islander" as any Samoan or Tongan or Fijian, by virtue of living on a "Pacific island".
