I really liked Routh as Supes though, I thought his acting was spot on to Reeve, especially the voices, which was his objective. He also looks like Superman in my opinion. A younger Superman, but, he is one of the few people who can wear the suit and look great rather than stupid, which is what makes the difference.

I agree with you. Something else that bothered me about this Superman is when he was basically stalking Lois Lane. Abusing his powers to eavesdrop on Lois was just plain creepy. The Superman I grew up on would NEVER do something like that.

@ajv453 well he got stabbed by that kryptonite shard (stabbed)... and the island had kryptonite inside it but the kryptonite was not in direct contact with him. and the plane was hard to stop bcos there were people inside the plane so he could not just blow it up or anything... he needed to balance it properly and bring it to a stop slowly to keep every1 safe but the plane kept breaking apart. use ur head...
Its not that Superman Returns is a bad movie...its that it was such a missed opportunity. It was a retread of the 1st 2 Superman films. Everyone loves Christopher Reeve as Superman...but we have to update the franchise for this generation which is a generation that doesnt really believe in heroes anymore. Lois Lane should always be played by a Canadian chick, the guy who wrote superman was Canadian and Lois Lane was his girlfriend and she is played by a Canadian girl almost all the time so I think that they made a mistake in this movie by not having her being played by a Canadian, and everything else, but for me that was the biggest mistake in this movie, the second one was making the movie.

Of course he should have gotten a lead suit on as well, but that would require brains.

I dunno. Why would she have to die? It's not like she's giving birth to an ogre. Kryptonians are still the same size, etc. as humans. The kid won't even have any powers until exposed to the yellow sun's rays, so we're clear on that.

Superman Returns was a dull, joyless film that didn't really do anything with the character that made it worth watching. The action was uninspired and mostly lifted from the first film, and the story pretty much wrote the franchise into a corner that can only be escaped with a reboot. I'm glad Chris Nolan is gonna clean house on this franchise though, because it's way overdue.
Eric, based on your review I went out and purchased "superman 2 The Richard Donner Cut"...Man I was enthralled at how the story of this movie panned out and the effort it took to get it on the screen ...with that said, Richard Donner Cut is Stiil NOT a Richard Donner Cut because it still has some of the Lester footage cut in it...suffice to say thank you, because the scenes with Marlon Brando are perfection.

I loved "Superman Returns" but I agree with many of your criticisms.
I hated Superman 2,3 and 4, and I don't care if "Superman didn't fight anyone." Why is everything about fighting? I like this movie because it shows that being Superman is a bit lonely and emotionally draining. Plus , it DOES indeed have action.

The Donner cut ended with him turning back time like in Superman 1. Because Superman 1 and 2 were one story they shot for both films. And then when 1 was being rushed out they used the turn the world back ending. Now if Donner had been aloud to finish the movie the ending woudl have been different. But because he was booted off the film the Donner cut keeps the orignal ending which is the same as the first movies ending.
I didn't think Lois was that bad, she had the perfect look (everytime I draw Lois I use Bosoworth for reference) but her acting was quite bad. Still I think she wasn't as bad as Katie Holmes in Batman Begins. I didn't like the costume due to the fact like many people, I thought it was too dark to the point where it might as well be Bizarro's costume, the plastic tiny S shield, and the neck line.
Ya that chick who played Louis was pretty awful and that chrome dome of a head kinda turned me off, Plus I never really Lex in the movies I don't think He should be a hands on type of guy.
I loved it at first. Hell this film got me into comics. However as I started watching the Donner films and reading the comics, I realized how much Superman was out of character and so much wasted potential. We waited almost 20 years to not see an epic with Superman dealing with Darkseid or Brainiac but just a poor rehash of the first film? However I still love the cinematography, the music, and flying scene with Lois.
They need to give us a epic battle against Doomsday or Darkside but after we get his history by Brainiac and fight him without looking like a transformer graphic

I dunno. Why would she have to die? It's not like she's giving birth to an ogre. Kryptonians are still the same size, etc. as humans. The kid won't even have any powers until exposed to the yellow sun's rays, so we're clear on that.

I can't believe that Singer screwed this up so badly. Also, why why WHY did they give him a magenta cape, boots etc.????!!!! Why is Louis a burned out feminabitch? Why is superman full of Marvel-like self doubt? Louis Lane is a terrible character in this. I was soooo disappointed with this film! I agree with you that he would never just leave or have premarital sex with Louis. He's supposed to be an American Christ figure, not a Zeus figure. Give us Superman, not Post-Modern Man.

Superman Returns was a dull, joyless film that didn't really do anything with the character that made it worth watching. The action was uninspired and mostly lifted from the first film, and the story pretty much wrote the franchise into a corner that can only be escaped with a reboot. I'm glad Chris Nolan is gonna clean house on this franchise though, because it's way overdue.

Eric, based on your review I went out and purchased "superman 2 The Richard Donner Cut"...Man I was enthralled at how the story of this movie panned out and the effort it took to get it on the screen ...with that said, Richard Donner Cut is Stiil NOT a Richard Donner Cut because it still has some of the Lester footage cut in it...suffice to say thank you, because the scenes with Marlon Brando are perfection.

I loved "Superman Returns" but I agree with many of your criticisms.
I hated Superman 2,3 and 4, and I don't care if "Superman didn't fight anyone." Why is everything about fighting? I like this movie because it shows that being Superman is a bit lonely and emotionally draining. Plus , it DOES indeed have action.

I agree with most of your review. Not a huge fan of the costume though. You are right with the casting.
My biggest gripe was the kid. What was Singer thinking? Superman simply doesn't have kids! WHY give him one? Just to rip off Jor-El from Superman 1?
The Donner days are over! The only thing i'd keep from the original is William's score. It's a good thing they are gonna reboot this. Superman needs more time in the oven.

I would actually love to see a superman film that doesn't have Lex Luthor. I am tired of Lex Luthor. I don't care who they decide just not Lex. I think they should do Doomsday because he actually killed Superman and that would be great knowing that this character is a real threat to Superman.

I saw this in cinema's and didn't like it too much. the only thing i liked was Kevin Spacy. and i think that was the only reason i wanted to see it. a i went with a friend who only wanted to see it because the light aircraft that Cyclops man drives is actually owned and was stunt driven by my friend's Uncle. but anyway, i didn't like it much. by the way, when are you posting the review of Brubaker Captain America: Omnibus?

The Donner cut ended with him turning back time like in Superman 1. Because Superman 1 and 2 were one story they shot for both films. And then when 1 was being rushed out they used the turn the world back ending. Now if Donner had been aloud to finish the movie the ending woudl have been different. But because he was booted off the film the Donner cut keeps the orignal ending which is the same as the first movies ending.

I didn't think Lois was that bad, she had the perfect look (everytime I draw Lois I use Bosoworth for reference) but her acting was quite bad. Still I think she wasn't as bad as Katie Holmes in Batman Begins. I didn't like the costume due to the fact like many people, I thought it was too dark to the point where it might as well be Bizarro's costume, the plastic tiny S shield, and the neck line.

I loved it at first. Hell this film got me into comics. However as I started watching the Donner films and reading the comics, I realized how much Superman was out of character and so much wasted potential. We waited almost 20 years to not see an epic with Superman dealing with Darkseid or Brainiac but just a poor rehash of the first film? However I still love the cinematography, the music, and flying scene with Lois.

I did not like this, at all. First, I'm not a big fan of Superman, and to be honest, I really don't like Superman. I find him boring, and highly overrated.
Now, with that said, I very much enjoyed the first 2 films, and I hope that when they reboot the franchise, they use darker villians. I want, Brainiac, or Doomsday, or Metallo. Just anyone besides Lex Luthor.
