I've travelled all over Europe with my little terrierists in the back of my car. First by ferry over the Channel then all through France and Spain.

I always fly with my cat. He's quiet when he's knocked out from the sedative, but he wakes up about halfway across the country, and he flips around in his carrier awhile unless I hold him in my lap and comfort him. Flight attendants don't like it if you do that though, so I always ask if it's ok to take him to the bathroom, where I usually take him out and hold him (not letting him down so he can dart into some unknown hidey hole; cats would find it if it existed!). Taking BOTH cats this Xmas!

How come they just won't make special sections in certain planes or have smaller planes for people who want to fly with their pets. It will cost more b/c of cleanup etc. but hey I bet people would pay

I'm thinking of moving overseas and I wanted to have my dog in the cabin with me, but after seeing this, I'm getting worried. I know that my dog won't bark or carry on, because she never does that in public, but she would fret and probably wet herself. She'd hate it. But she'd be just as bad WITHOUT me! My fear is that leaving her for 13 hrs in the back of the plane, she won't be treated properly. What can I do? Please give me some advice!

GG, Poor dog/poor passengers. The small ones are allowed with you if small enough to fit the carrier under the seat. I travel with them if driving, but it's difficult because you cannot leave them in a hot car...VERY DANGEROUS. I will NEVER BUY a dog/cat with so many at the pounds waiting to be rescued. BIG earthquake on East Coast...5.9.

I've been looking into this for a while actually because I'm moving pretty far away and have pet rabbits that we need to take with us somehow. Many flights allow cats, dogs, even birds in-cabin. (Rabbits...much harder to find, fyi) But I'm pretty sure the carriers have to remain completely closed so that lady can NOT have her dog out like that. Risking your frightened pet getting loose is what will make more airlines prohibit in-cabin pets. Unfortunately, sometimes in-cabin is best option.

Glozell, I'm not sure if it's changed but they use to put pets in cargo. In 2007, when I traveled from Hawaii to the states, they put my dog in cargo.

I agree it's cruel to take your pet with you for no good reason. But I recently moved cross-country and it would have been more cruel to drive with my two cats. Luckily my cats were silent. That IS the most annoying bark - that would have been awful to put up with, but there really is no good option sometimes.

Most Dogs that are under a weight/size requirement on southwest/ certain other airlines are allowed in the cabin. Anything over that requirement must be checked into cargo in a crate. But lucky for you @glozell1, Southwest only allows dogs/cats in the cabin and doesn't allow any in the cargo bin.

that was a pomeranian, looks over heated. I train my little yorkies the minute they are eating reg. food. Carry them in a dog carrier, dog purse in the house so they don't freak out when they need to go with me. I think its for the little dogs to be in the cab because they can go into hypoglycemic shock easily. Also the vet can give meds to calm the dog down before you go on your trips. That whine would make anyone go insane.

It's not against the law for dogs to ride in the cabin if they are small enough to carry. It depends on the airline company. Big dogs go in the cargo being kept in a cage. That said I agree that it would be annoying as heck with that yipping for 8 hours. And short nosed dogs have a hard time breathing in the cabin. Very selfish of the dog owner and the airline not to think about the other passengers. ( I hate small dogs)

Aw that dog's so cute. I got a pitbull. She's a big loveable baby :) The only issue is that she likes to jump up on the bed with me and just plop down like a rock. There's no getting her off unless you wanna survive the "sad face" she pulls out to guilt you with.

As a puppy raiser for a guide dog organization, this is the stuff that angers me to no end. If your animal is NOT a service animal, it should not be in places that pets are not allowed to go - i.e. seating in an airplane. Granted, it is entirely possible the dog was a service animal. However, even though it is not required by law, many people who use service animals identify them in some way (i.e. vests). People doing stuff like this just make it even harder for service animal users.

@glozell1 The best way would be to avoid traveling with pets if at all possible as prolonged travel can stress pets out very easily. If travel can't be avoided, I would consult with your pet's vet, obedience trainer, etc. for their advice on how to travel with your pet for the most positive experience possible as each animal is different and handles travel differently.

I flew from Ireland to America and sat behind cranky, verbally abusive old people who kept getting out of their seats and yelling at us for kicking them even though we weren't even moving (my sister was even asleep!) But I do think those people should have given their dogs some pills to make them sleep. That's what my aunt had to do and her dog slept the whole time.
