I have a lot of Asian friends...and not just Asian Americans. I have friends in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong. And they have made plenty of comments to make me think that they are uncomfortable with their looks. I think what really set it off was the fact that they spent a summer with me in the US and they could see how different they were from everyone else. A lot of Asians are doing it for a more Modern look or "westernized" look.. It might not be all Asians but there are A LOT.

I am half korean and I have double lids but it is really small so makeup is really hard but I rather have monolid. I try different ways to wear my makeup so I can look like I have monolids. Monolids is so beautiful to me.

Um, an Asian double eyelid is different than the eyelids of black and white people.
A large percentage of Asians naturally have a double eyelid- it's considered desirable, which is why other Asians want it.
If a white person is born with a huge nose, does getting a nose job mean they're trying to look more Asian? Why do people automatically assume that anytime an Asian person changes their appearance, it's to look more "black" or "white"?

@cerablu and a large percentage of asians..especially American ones feel that if they get this surgery they will fit in with everyone else. Mostly becuase a lot of them came up in most white or non asian neighborhoods and people made fun of them....this is more of an issue within the asian community becuase a lot of asian people feel that getting this surgery is only so you can appear to look more western. What does getting a nose job have to do with looking more asian?

Anyway, getting a nose job is to looking more Asian, as getting double eyelid surgery is to looking white: irrelevant.
Plus, you're obviously not Asian, so how would you know? Anytime an Asian friend makes some disparaging remark about her looks, our response to one other is always, "at least you're not a white girl!" Basically, the eyelid surgery is to look PRETTIER, not white.

I have a lot of Asian friends...and not just Asian Americans. I have friends in Taiwan, Japan, Korea, China and Hong Kong. And they have made plenty of comments to make me think that they are uncomfortable with their looks. I think what really set it off was the fact that they spent a summer with me in the US and they could see how different they were from everyone else. A lot of Asians are doing it for a more Modern look or "westernized" look.. It might not be all Asians but there are A LOT.

and i understand you're frustration about the eye makeup too. when i put on eye shadow it never looks that great...

I am half korean and I have double lids but it is really small so makeup is really hard but I rather have monolid. I try different ways to wear my makeup so I can look like I have monolids. Monolids is so beautiful to me.

This wasn't said to be mean, but why not be proud of it and put an end to chasing down whatever has become popular among the mainstream? Why not at least attempt to get the mainstream to look up to you instead?
I also highly doubt that half of all Asians have that specific trait. I realize that many Filipino's have it, but unless I'm mistaken they are a mixed group. Then there are many Chinese who are mixed with Russians also.

ThyTbird, I have a question for you, and all Asians that want double eyelid surgeries for something as silly as make-up.
That question is something that you may really want to give some thought to.
Why not value the things that make you all look so unique? Why imitate what you see those with the double eyelid as opposed to truly embracing your eyelids and creating your own make-up styles. Why not be courageous and pursue something that would make others want to look like you instead?

Besides, many Japanese at least say caucasians have "big noses, larger fatter bodies(hips, butt), since many go for the small "Kawaii look". ;] and I guess some don't like freckles, on whites that do have them, or the "abnormal" caucasion face shape.... ;]

Many Japanese, especially from northern japan have light skin, as most of Japan's climate is similar to many parts of Europe...
Hair and eye color in anime characters has nothing to do with their race, but rather as an accesory for the character's personality. No one has eyes as big as anime, and blacks, and many others have big eyes as well! The big eyes, just make the emotions more shown, and make characters look alot "cuter". Sorry for going into anime, but I had to make that connection,

The Japanese admire and idolize Europeans for their melanin lacking features. I've heard so many admit it that it's undeniable.
It's kind of sad because there was once a point in history when Asians were actually proud of the things that made them different from Europeans and actually thought they were repulsive.
So so sad that they've fallen into the subordinate position of worshipers.

I hate people, both whites and non whites, that say Asians want to be white just because of the double eyelid preference, and then some even go as far as caliming the japanese want to be white because of anime! 1st of all, The anime characters have the japanese small nose, small mouth, round wide face, small pointy chin, no eyebrow bridge i believe you call it, and many japanese are actually born with the double eye lid, and usually have bigger eyes then for say, the chinese or koreans...

To change one's appearance to 'fit in' the dominant culture is basic self hate form just the intention to feel socially accepted and elevated. It reinforces stereotypes that 'white beauty' is better than 'asian beauty'. The same way before black is beauty movement came along to against white standard of beauty. Its basic colonial mentality.

well i'm sorry to burst your bubble but i never denied my heritage. i may be half white but i'm still eating rice & currently proud to be in asia with my family. i only said i mingle with white men because white men approach me.
i'm open to dating different ethnicities because i'm open-minded. i like personalities, i've met a few asian men who i would love to date.
afterall i AM an american, so why can't i date an american without being assumed i'm "betraying" or "denying" my heritage?

when you date a person from another race, you are basically saying a big FUCK YOU to the opposite sex of their own race. It sends them the message of "You're not good enough, that's why I prefer these types of people over you."
Whenever you race mix, you effectively end your family bloodline. All races have different genes. By race mixing, you can potentially destroy your family lineage by mudding up your genes for further generations.
That's why fathers of all races hate it.

Biologically speaking, genetics studies show that heterogenety is prefered by natural selection. Mingling gives genetic diversity and therefore increase fitness in the genetic pool. That tells why humans tend to have distaste in homogeneous traits.

'Mingling' by the way is only good for non-white races, since by diluting their genes with the whites, they are bettering themselves.
For whites, 'mingling' with non-white races is a step down since any child born from a non-white is not actually part of the white race.
That's why Africans are so obsessed with chasing our white women. It's their innate desire to 'breed' out their black genes and whiten up a bit, thus be more socially accepted.

QUESTION!!: i got a question, :P. both of my parents have natural double eyelids but somehow me and my brother are both monolids. my parents say that i'll get double eyelids soon when i grow up, but my brother didn't and his sixteen. im worried that i'll stay a monolid forever. :P not really a question tho
