  • what is your rear end gear ratio ?

  • no air cleaners, i did that too in the 80s.

  • @440sac yeah, the engine paid with some pretty good score marks on the cylinder walls

  • why didnt u use ur trans brake in the 80s???????

  • @pontiacman3 cuz I didn't have a trans brake

  • With racing wat should my gear ratio be 1st to 6th gear should the gears be closer or further away from one another

  • ya my buddy Brian Reali had that broown 68 camaro from rancho knew himm brian has a blue 67 camaro now...bad ass runs 10s he's going to take it out tonight Wed 7/13 he was a rancho guy he knew matt choate he was a little younger than us.he's jus a kid 44yrs old haha...

  • man i forgot all about that maverick ...he was a wednesday night regular in the 80s at sac

  • yeah, he was a Kid from Rancho. Don't know his name, he was a bit younger than myself. He was buddies with Dave Corbett and Troy Parker, who were from a younger crop of Rancho hot rodders.

  • Someone should invite GreenPeace to one of these events, just to see their faces. lol!

  • Nice! My uncle's car has about 1000 hp and runs about 8.90 - 9.20 sec 1/4 mile :)

  • @xEarlX10 That's cool, what kind of car and engine?

  • @ueverdream 68' Firebird same as yours its almost the same color too :)

  • @xEarlX10 Was it a street driven car?

  • This is a great video thanks for sharing. Makes me want to watch Two Lane Blacktop.

  • fucking OLD SCHOOL AWESOME

  • love that green

  • wonder where that car is at now

  • thats fucking flying for back in 1987

  • had a 67 400 myself, shit where'd it go .. Fast 'bird there !

  • funny how the first run of the day is usually the best...... good work, looks like fun!!

  • nice runs, nice video.

  • wow i jus remember seeing that maverick @2.24 used to see that dude all over reminds me of a fiends race car jeff butlers Orange Peel 2 fuck im getting old

  • Great video, thanks for sharing

  • Damn, that thing RIPS!

  • WOW,, love seeing old videos,,, back then the Race fuel was probably cheaper than 87 octane today, lol,,,, nice video man,,, 1987? i bet that Video camera weighs a TON! lol

  • thumbs up for f-bodies

at 2:40 what was the other car?

  • @chopedandsectioned It was a Chevy V8 powered Opel GT trailered race car running in the 9s

  • @ueverdream is this an original Verdoro Green color? And whats the engine? Very nice car

  • hahaha... so u seem like a type of guy that would work extremely hard all week in that year and drag race all weekend haha

  • dam.. year i was born..now i have a chevy nova with a 383 hah

  • you was wery lucky boy in 17 years

  • what were your rpm shifts

  • @TheJakechevelle Shifts were made at 5500 RPM. The engine loved to be shifted at that RPM. Shifting at any higher RPM would not produce any better performance.

It would go through the traps at 6700 RPM with 4.56 gears or 6200 with 4.10 gears (122-124 MPH)

  • all throttle no bottle! Oh Yeah!

  • Man, Those were the days. SuperShops was in full swing and just about every-one I knew was still on the muscle high.................I've still got some old jetboat footage from '75 my dad shoot on our 8mm reel-to-reel WITH SOUND at a local lake(back when they still permitted it)..........I'll try to get it up as soon as I figure it out..............

  • reminds me of my 67 Carmaro, just a go no show kind of car

  • I think I remember this car, did you ever take it out to elcentro rd? if so that was one of the quickest cars out there!

  • that was ungodly fast for 1987!

  • all about pontiac baby!!!!!!!

  • so are you goin to do a update video of the firebird

  • bet that was a fun handful on street tires

  • @turfguy87

    yes, too much fun!

  • what converter are you runnin

  • what stall coverter were you runnin

  • @TheJakechevelle

The converter was an 11" 3000 stall - nothing special.

It would stall to a max of 3000rpm as advertised.

  • >>>That car is a monster! And the video is amazing. I actually love the old quality of the film. Adds a lot to the feel of it all. Great vid.

  • @joncoppola28 :

Thanks for the nice comments. The video was taken with a huge camcorder I rented from U-Haul. The camera was HUGE...it was hooked via some cables to a unit the size of a brief case that you had to tote along with you as you shot the video.

  • @ueverdream I remember cel phones being as big as a loaf of bread when they first came out!

  • Love this 'raw' as fk vid, 23 years ago,10s,excellant,burnout,staging all wrong, sticking out rears, its all so wrong while being so fkn right, man I miss times like this. Twats with all the modern shit struggle to run 10s here in UK. Well done for posting this up

  • @gemandbrad

Thanks, I really miss those days too.

  • Your friend posted a slower time, but please tell me he beat that Opel (or whatever it was).

Just wanted to give you an update. I picked up a 9 inch rear end with disk brakes. I'm going to put my tax return money towards pistons and cam shaft. I just have to decide on which ones. I've got 96 heads and stock crank/rods.

    John

  • damn, thats just badass.

  • @xJ3R3M14Hx

    Thanks....those were some fun days.

  • i love this video! nice car by the way

  • wheres the car at now

  • in the garage...

  • sweet

  • are you goin to make new video of you're firebird

  • You've got me seriously considering building my 455 for my coupe instead of my 400. Sometimes I click on this video and listen to the audio while paying my bills on-line. Now if I could just get my butt out to the garage to work on my car! Take care,

    John

  • Go for the 455 John.

Does listening to a 550 horsepower Pontiac engine make paying bills a more pleasant experience?

  • I guess it sort of numbs the pain a bit! I'll research a bit on what internals to use to build the 455. I may be asking for some guidance in the future.

  • i like the set up on as far as tires go what did u have

  • thats bad i just baught one for a 1000 dollars im restoring. im builing a 406 sbc to put in it

  • That's cool...more power to ya...but I wish you were putting a Pontiac engine in it.

It's just that the engine is the character of the car. They make lots of good stuff for pontiac mills these days... Is it a race sbc or a warmed up street engine?

Anyways, let us know how it runs.

  • @ueverdream its gonna be race 630 lift soilid roller cam tunnel ram msd ignition bowtie heads 205 valves 12.5:1 compression

  • nice car man

    i've got a '80 T/A pace car...i might post some vids

  • @chevypower406 noooooooooooooooooo dont put a chevy engine in a pontiac!!!!! your taking the soul out of the car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @humantestdummy not really cuz i have the origanal 350 engine and tranny that still runs like a raped ape i can put back in it

  • love the dry hops to test traction-I miss those; no one ever does them anymore. They just roll up to the line & stage....

  • Yeah, dry-hops were fun. To me, the most exciting part of a pass in a drag car is the launch, so besides testing for traction, dry hops added more of that launch thrill to each pass. I believe they were deemed unnecessary as they did not enhance traction for the actual launch on a pass, largely being considered unnecessary extra wear and tear.

  • i love firebird 400 (1968)

  • Nasty I love it

  • best year ever...hint.. year i was born : )

  • thats mighty fine boy.

  • heh heh heh heh, i love the way she sits. tonight were going a town over to try and find some bird food for my friends 78 with a 400 horse 455 4 speed, i have a camaro in mind heh heh

  • Now thats true pontiac power

  • damn, 10.80s on a N/A street driven car in 1987..not bad at all, i must say i never really was a huge 1st gen firebird fan, but this one looks cool, i hope if you still own it still looks and performs as it does in this video, gotta love those crager s/s rims..i wish they would come back in style..

  • they never went out!

a true muscle car from the 60's or 70's

sported either cragers, or original rally sport wheels. You can keep your 17inch nigger wheels.

  • The engine is the same except bigger cam (637/660 int/exh lift w/.050 duration of 275/289 [312/322 adv]) more exhaust port work on the factory cast iron #48 heads, different tunnel ram (Wenzler 1) and different headers. Will still run Cragar SS, but 10" wide rear tires instead 11.5s to clean up the look a bit. Thanks for the nice comment on the performance; it should perform as well as it did and hopefully a little better with the cam, port work, induction and header changes.

  • My dad has a 68 bird aswell, he was wondering what tire size the slicks were-that you were running on the track? thanks

  • The slicks were 11.5 x 29.5 Firestone wrinkle-wall type mounted on zero-offset (centered) 15 x 10 rims. There was room to move the tires inward another 1.5" with the right offset rim, which would have got rid of the unsightly tire hanging out look.

  • Thanks for the quick response-love the car (sounds amazing)

Keep me posted about the restoration :)

  • nice i love pontiacs too check my video out i got a 455 bored 60 over with a nice cam and some butler ported 6x heads !!

  • I've got a 455 I'm going to put in my '67 Firebird. I love this video and watch it every few weeks.

  • that thing sounds bad ass man does it stil have a pontiac ?

  • Thanks - it will always have a Pontiac engine as long as I own it.

  • i never said i was fast its more of a street rod for shows. and yes it does one hell of a burn out!

  • Fancy that! I never claimed to be a burnout guru, as my car was more of a fast street car, and the burnouts were just a means to that end.

Perhaps you should learn how to make your car fast first. Hint - as you make your car faster; your burnout capability becomes greater. In other words, a 10 second car can do bigger and better burnout than a 14 second car can, that is; if that's what you're into.

  • HAHA learn to do a burn out first!

  • I think what is important is that: my car, a street driven car, ran 10 second 1/4 mile ETs at 124 MPH in 1987, without the aid of any type of power-adder.

Have you ever made a ¼ mile pass down a drag strip with your Cougar? If so, the last thing I would care about is what kind of burnouts you do, and would mainly be interested in its ¼ mile performance; i.e., ET and MPH.

So how fast is your Cougar? Or do you just want to tell me about the neato-keen burnouts it can do.

  • fuck no he didnt the cougar wouldnt even ,make it to the track hahahaha

nice, i have the 48 ra3 heads but i believe there 72cc heads not 69

mine hade great compression it was 60 over now i am going with a stroker kit, same heads

  • Is that Baylands?

I used to do bracket nights on Wednesdays there.

    Sweet bird bro. I've a 68 vert.

  • i love firebrid very much and my brother had firebrid 1987

  • this is a great video man! this is the time and reason i still drive these cars. nice shit dude. best vid ive seen of some really cool days.

  • Inspirational. Love it, especially the street stuff. Im putting together a 461 Pontiac powered 68 Firebird with 5 speed here in England, things like this keep me going.

  • nice video awesome to see a car running these times especially in 1987!!!!!! and it has a pontiac in itttttttttttttttttt!!!!!!!!!!1

  • Awesome - 455 Pontiac power .

  • Hey the Big N lils rocked I miss that look as I always saw old muscle like yours back when I was a kid back in the 80's especially on either Cragar S/S rims or Aluminum slotted mags. I hope you put some at least old school style mags on it and it have a lil meat on the back still :-)

  • Are you gonna redo her like she was in this vid? I hope like hell its not getting shaved door handles and 18's and a billet steering wheel. kick ass vid btw your bird is truly bad ass!

  • Thanks. No 18's for me; I'm going for 20's.....lol...just kidding.

The main difference when it hits the road again will be no more big tires hanging out of the rear fenders.

  • dude very nice car

  • sweet car... that is my other dream car... i love stangs and firebirds...

  • I was off by .020" it's actually .070"

  • that was a nice '76 u passed at the beginning. love the bird, but sounds like she's in need of a rebuild (at idle anyway). something doesnt sound right.

  • At the time of the video, the engine was less than two months old and probably had less than 50 street miles

What you are hearing at an idle are the Holley 660 center-squirter carburetors for race-only tunnel-ram applications; not designed or calibrated for optimum idling capabilities.

  • Nice Firebird! I've been going to Sac since the early 80's. Post some new video when the car is restored.

  • Thanks - will do if the day ever comes.

What part of town did you live in back in those days?

  • Damn i rember those days i lived a 1 1/2 from sac raceway worked and raced there in the 80s me dave smith belveder bob b reali wow that brings back some memories course i almost always never drove my car home capped up

  • What kind of car did you race?

    I know Belvedere Bob.

    How about these steet warriors:

Do you remember Matt Choate and his green 72 Nova?

Or how about Tim Tolman and his Red 68 Firebird

  • i had a 63 plymouth savoy matter of fact i bought bobzigato's old 63 i hung with david smith and brian reali he had a brown 68 camaro ran 11's i also had a blue duster 11's we raced alot out at elcentro too remember the bak n blk primerd black gto/ lemans that dude was fast ya everybody knew tolman

  • lol - when describing the back-n-black GTO you should always include: "home stereo speakers on roof blaring AC/DC" -- yeah That was Mac Machoro; another one of my Pontiac associates.

Tim tolman and Matt Choate were my good friends. Tim went to the "dark side" and put a BBC in his Firebird...lol

  • dude i wasnt gonna say nuthin about the ac/dc but you called it that shit was funny yea a friend of mine James Dann had a blk lemans w/flames sbc duel 4s i bought a pro gas chassis 68 camaro from sam foster and put a bb mopar in it so....

  • wow - bb mopar in 68 Camaro...talk about the darkside...you gotta be like the Darth Vader of the Mopar world to do that..lol

You ever see belvedere Bob anymore?...Kevin Houser still sees him...you know Kevin?

  • naw i haven't seen bob in years what did Kevin drive? i knew alot of guys by their cars you lived 5 miles from the track huh? you must have lived in rosemont

  • Kevin's heyday was a bit earlier than mine as he is even older than I at 48.

Kevin is a Mopar guy, and used to have a very nice red 440 GTX 4spd/dana 60 car - ran a best of 11.64 with a tunnel ram setup he borrowed from Bob.

Currently he has a very clean root-beer colored Super-Bee that runs 13s

At the time of the video (1987) I lived in Lincoln Village very near the intersection of Bradshaw and Lincoln Village I grew up in Rancho Cordova so all of my racing buddies were from Rancho

  • awesome!

  • That is hauling ass back in '87 for a street car.

  • Inspiring video, I visit it all the time...

  • nothing ever sounded better :D Bad ass firebird.

  • one of the best 1st gens ive ever seen

  • freaking kickass

  • I'd like to put a Dana 60 in my bird, but I'll be lucky to afford to get it running, much less beefed up! What transmission were you running? What changes are you making in the resto and how close are you to finishing? I'm building a 455 backed by a Turbo 400. Awesome car!

  • what track is this ??

  • Sacramento Raceway

  • the big indian did pretty good

  • Thanks - It was fun - I miss those days

  • holy moly that is fast!
