He didn't die in real life, his character just died on the show. This was after he had an operation. Apparently his heart stopped for 3 minutes, but, the doctors brought him back and that's why he says, 'only the good die young, which makes perfect sense', meaning he doesn't think of himself as really good, but, then he dies at the end of the episode, which is poetic because he really was good.
