@bohun28 Thanks for seeing my ancestors (ottomans) as ugly monster-ish freaks and giant stupidheads... I applaud your humanity. What you say completely reverses in this present era's events aganist you though, ironic.
Ok, first of all don't be so sensitive, I did not mean that the Ottomans were reminiscent of Orcs or monsters or anything of the sort. This scene is reminiscent of the Battle of Vienna, and this is what I meant, because you have a larger, overwhelming, army besieging a city that seems to have no hope of salvation and that army is defeated (at Vienna entirely, and in the movie partially defeated) by a massive and powerful cavalry charge, which saves the day at the last minute.
I would not be too quick to talk about humanity if we are talking about present day human rights in Turkey and many other Muslim nations I hasten to add. Nor is it unheard of for Muslims to celebrate the defeat of their enemies, in the past as well as in this day and age.
As for the events of the present era and how it reverses what I say, I'm unsure of what you mean, because it is America which is the aggressor against Islam? But also extreme Islam that was the aggressor against US
Way to leave a level 500 mage there when you have a wonderful chance to at least harm him instead if going away just to get stabbed by a hobbit then finished by a nearly weaker chick...
I don't know the exact source, but the king's pre-battle harangue is partly derived from an ancient Scandinavian source. As a Vietnam veteran, I would like to remind my young readers that war is not like this, unless it's the Civil War or WWII. The little pointless wars the USA has been addicted to in my life time -- in those you're wasting your life. Having said that, I admit that this scene brings tears to my eyes every time. We all want to do something great, even at the risk of our lives.
Why the hobbits in the films shown are actually so weak? In the books, but they are not. As they take back their land, even all alone. Real stupid ey. and then leave out so many scenes in the books. Just like Harry Potter. Can we now compare, of course not but is so. Well, the film is nevertheless become great. I like most Eomer. He is so hot;-)
I love the battle for Minas Tirith scenes, however whenever I re-watch this movie and the parts about Denethor burning Faramir alive come im just like "k cool, lets get back to the battle now" XD
Peter Jackson was right to nerf the fight. Had the Witch King and Gandalf really locked blades, I would not be surprised if the cinema exploded from sheer epicness overload.
@ohmandamp that would make me cum and had orgasms haha... but we had balrog fight so gandalf doesnt owe anything.... it was cool for eowyn (dernhelm) to kill the witch king "i am no man" so.... remember to kill witch kings you should wait for a girl to do the job.
Your missing some key points, at the time of the battle at weathertop the Witch King was a Wraith!! Before the battle of Gondor the Witch King was returned to FLESH and his full power restored.
The Witch King was no joke, much of the magic of Gandalf came from Arnor. A country distroyed by Angmar the nation of the Witch King. With the aid of his mount the battle would of most likely ended in the Witch King's victory.
@ThatAngryGuy First off Gandalf came from Aman not Arnor. He along with Saruman, Rhodegast, and the blue wizards were sent by Manwe the chief Vala to oppose Sauron. They were given instructions not to oppose him directly but that the peoples of ME were to bring him down. The wizards were limited to giving encouragement and wisdom. Secondly he is an angelic being like Sauron and the Balrog. NOT human like Harry potter. If the Balrog , could not overcome Gandalf the Grey the WK was no match for
@51Jakester I never said Gandalf came from Arnor, I said his most powerful magic did. As he states when he faces the balrog.
"I am a servent of the sacred fire, wielder of the flame of Arnor, you shall not pass!"
Gandolf was a maiar an ancient soul that became Valar once in flesh. Once in flesh they had no more power then a Númenórean and any extra power they had was due to the magic they learned in Middle-Earth. Balrogs were not beings of unmatchable power as Tuor( a numenoren) killed 5.
@ThatAngryGuy Read the book. It is Anor. This refers back to the Simarillion at the beginning of the Valenquenta, Iluvatar's creative act is is refered to as " Secret fire". Earlier it is referred to as "Flame Imperishable". The direct quote from the book is"I am a servant of the Secret Fire,wielder of the flame of Anor."There is much meaning to this statement but I have little space to go into all of it.
Gandald the White's staff didn't get broken in the book, and he even drew Glamdring, his sword, who's power is supposed to be equal to that of the sword of of the Witch King, one of several book mess ups in the film.
@lastEvergreen When in Wraith form the ringwraith's were nearly blind, they relied greatly on their mounts to see the world around them. If you could overcome their fear aura's they spread you could easily drive them back. As there already "undead" they are nearly impossible to kill however. Before the battle of gondor Sauron restored the Witch King to Flesh, when alive the Witch King was one of the most powerful sorcerers on middle earth. As he shows weilding two weapons no one man could lift.
in this witch king debate i think you have to look at the ring its said a lot of times the enemies power grows with the power of the ring you have to assume the witch kings power grows considerably from weathertop to this scene
forget Vader. The Witch King is the COOLEST BadAss ever. And they did a magnificient job on the costume and the Helmet. Long Love the Nasgul. Loyal Servents to the Dark Lord.
@Mockingbird5150 Lol. I'd love to see the Witch king try and stop a stardesroyer or do the same swordtrick with a lightsaber. Vader is and will always be the coolest villain ever. And i say that as a LOTR-geek.
You fools....you have to remember that the Witch-King of Carn-Dum is The King of the Nine Riders, HE is the ONE who has bringed Arnor, Osgiliath and Minas Ithil to complete destruction...He is also a socerer and a warrior of old which has the most powerful ring of power from those given to men ....His power is deadly...In the book Tolkien says that when Grond smashed the gate of Minas Tirith, it was not yet destroyed...The witch king's magic is the one who has breaked it
All of you are just overthinking it... Eowyn killed the Witch-King just because she isn't a man. The Witch-King was a bit distracted by getting stabbed to kill Eowyn, plus it was a cursed Barrow-Blade that he probably had cursed during Angmar's campaign... So, really, that's just about all there is to it.
Eowyn where about to die, but Munti stabbed the witch king, and it was Aragon who defeated 5 nazgul at weathertop, not Gandalf. But i agree with you, its lol that Eowyn cud just stab him to death with a normal sword.
What the hell ? I watched all the "uncut" blue ray versions of the movies, and I did not see this scene ?! They told me that it was uncut ! Bastards ! :(
it wasn't just Eowny..in the books also the movie it wa because of Pippin stabbing him with the sword in the knee breaking his imortaility..the blade he was given by Tom. So it wasn't just Eowny..it was her and Pippin..a Women and a halfling..neither one a man..however..in Middle Earth they are the race of MEN even if they are female..With out Pippin breaking the spell Eowin would have failed.
it was gil-galad who said once to the witchking, that no man would kill him, but the witchking interpret this as no one can kill him and not a women comes and owns the shit out of him
orcs were like; - i gonna have a good retirement cuz orcs gonna rule oftr w blow shit out of gondor (horn of the rohirrim blows and orcs look at army of rohan) - damnd there goes my retirement
@jerpao13 He was born in Minas Tirith,Thengel stayed there because his father was an unpleasant man apparently... i don't know how i'd react to seeing my birthplace in flames and surrounded by monsters :D
Why didn't just lighted the shit out of him with that magic he performed when all the Nazguls were flying aftter the survivors of Osgiliath and Gandalf drew them back??
Because the Nazguls greatest strength is the fear it brings towards their enemies. As may've seen its scared the living daylight outta Pippin. Gandalf also knows the Witch King isnt something to play with. As he also is 1200 years old.
I always hated peter jackson for the way they made this scene. Gandalf should of owned the witch king no contest. How can aragon chase him away with a torch and gandalf get owned?? the nine riders are afraid of fire and are weak against it and seeing as how gandalf has the ring of fire he should of wiped him :)
Not exactly. In the books Gandalf was wary of confronting the Witch King because he didn't know if he was more powerful than him or not. Since Sauron has been gaining power, so has his servants. Gandalf said himself that he didn't know which one of them would win, but it turned out he didn't have to because Merry killed him (Eowyn too, I guess.)
@Eird Gandalf defeated what 5 Nazgul at weathertop, in fotr, has died and returned with more power then when he was Gandalf the grey and cannot defeat a wraith whose chief power was fear. By logic of the movies Eowyn is greater than Witch King who is greater than Gandlalf who is greater than the Balrog who is greater than Aragorn ("Swords are no more use here"). So really the Fellowship should have stopped in Rohan and picked up Eowyn.
:p possibly. The movies kind of screwed up at this part because the only way Eowyn was able to kill the Witch King was because Merry had stabbed him with a knife of Westernesse which he got in the barrow downs, which was made specifically to fight the Witch King. In the movies however, Merry wields a normal sword. So really, in the movie universe, the only reason the Witch King was so feared is because no one ever thought of running up behind him and stabbing him in the back :p
If Merry were wielding a "normal sword" it would be as tall as him. You seem to have forgotten that he's a hobbit and therefore a knife would be sword-sized for him.
I wasn't talking about sword size. I meant the knife he had in the book had spells on it that were designed to fight the witch king, whereas the short sword he got in Rohan didn't. I didn't mean he had a normal sword as in the size was the same.
@arielhentai08 TY, PJ wanted to show the increase in the WK's strength. So I think a better scene would have a group of soldiers accompanying Gandalf and when The WK casts his spell(?) the soldiers and Pippen are cast down and their spears shattered but Gandalf remains horsed and when the Wk draws his sword Gandalf draws his. The soldiers and Pippin get up to rush the Wk but draw back at the fell beasts roar. Then the horns of the Rohirrim.
@51Jakester Again, I'm with ya. How can them even think of putting Gandalf's image like that, come on there's no matach. And some people are still thinking about Gandalf vs. Dumbledore...
@MultiKillerBot This is the problem, are we talking about PJ's version or what was in the book? Sadly PJ's version has become "The Lord of the Rings" to many. First off No one entered past the Main Gate after it was broken cept the Witch King and he left upon hearing the Rohirrim. Tolkien hints in his books the Gondoran soldiers were each equal to 10 orcs, Remember they are descendants of Tolkien's Atlanteans. For example Elendil was 7' tall, Aragorn 6.5 ' tall not the shrimps we see here.
@51Jakester MMM , yes that was a problem , but then again , P.J , made an elite orc horde , in the books yes the Gondorians picked them off easily ,but in the movie he made the orcs stronger then the urukhai , and called them uberorc and wore armor similar to the easterlings . Remember Gondor in the movie only had 5,000 troops because they didnt get the 2,000 from the belfalas .
@51Jakester Also the siege started way too early in the movie , in the book the siege starts at midnight or almost in the movie like 6 hours earlier . And remeber Gondor was in a state of decline and only the ithileen rengers and the Tower Guard were of numenorean descent .
@sammygee17 No one is denying Eowyns role. It is the WK's overpowering of Gandalf. Again Gandalf defeated 5 Nazgul (including the WK) at weathertop and has returned after his death defeating the Balrog even more stronger.
At least these 6000 suns of bitches can say that, even though they only spent a morsel of time on middle earth, they didnt just sit at home jerking off and let evil take over the world.
@MrGilles1990, generally speaking you are right, but not if you are outflanking an army that is busy besieging a city, then it's actually very lethal!!
I've never seen this scene before, and have to say it beats all the others in its disappointment. In the book, the Witch-King rides into Minas Tirith after Grond breaks the gate, and all flee before him save Gandalf, who defies him - as opposed to here where Gandalf seems to be worsted.
what is going on? In the book, Gandalf is going to meet the Witch King, but something happens and they end up not fighting. No way could Witch King destroy his staff, much less beat him.
But regardless of who would win, how was Peter Jackson going to account in the rest of the film for Gandalf's lack of staff? They cut this bit but in the following bits he has a staff. Was he just going to have staffless Gandalf for the rest of the film?
oh right. still, what's going on in this clip? why on Earth are they suggesting the Nazgul leader is more powerful than Gandalf? And how do they get around the fact they cut this out - does he not have his staff later on in the film?
Also the author should have made Gandalf do more fancy stuff. All he does in the whole trilogy is make his wand-staff thingy glow. I wanted to see fireball, lightning strike, wizard blast, and you know really graphical fancy things.
Try to read the introduction of the LOTR. There was an entry there regarding the role of "magic" in the story. Tolkien made it a part of the story, an important element, but not it's crux. Magic here is more subtle, not the kind you see in kiddie stuffs.
@nutroot your critisisms of tolkien prove that you fail! Gandalf is capable of doing 'magic' if you call it that, but thats not why he was sent to middle-earth. the istari (gandalf, saruman, the 2 blue wizards and the other whos name escapes me) all were sent to fight sauron, but not to become leaders. the idea was that the istari would educatate the men of the west so they would be able to control middle earth when the elves depart. only gandalf stayed to this cause whilst the others didnt
@jacobsharps All I said was, I wanted to see Gandalf do fancy things. I never actually criticized about the book. Just my personal opinion, to which I'm sure many people agree!!
@jacobsharps i never got to read the 1rst book wich i know is stupide,i reda all of them (the hobbit,the sima something,LOTR 2,3 ) who are the 2 blue wizards? if you dont mind answering as a pm plz
Gandalf is a Maia. There were the Valar which were the Primary gods of Aman, they were under Iluvatar, the main god/creator of MiddleEarth, etc. The Maia were 2nd to the Valar; their purpose was to assist the Valar. Sauron was one of them but was currupted by the Valar Melkor. Although the WK was human, by becoming a Wraith inhereted Maia-like traits of power but somewhat lesser. Since the WK is the primary Nazgul, he also was involved w/ dark sorcery thus making him equal to Gandalf in power.
Ah not really, despite the immense power that he has acquired from Sauron, he still doesn't compare to the Resurrected Gandalf. When gandalf was "sent back" he has significantly increased in power, a real Maia will always be more powerful than any corrupted wraith.
lol from 4:30 to 4:43 the orcs were like "OH SHIT WE'RE FUCKED"

spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,

Why didn't just lighted the shit out of him with that magic he performed when all the Nazguls were flying aftter the survivors of Osgiliath and Gandalf drew them back??
Deancho 1 year ago
@Deancho
Because the Nazguls greatest strength is the fear it brings towards their enemies. As may've seen its scared the living daylight outta Pippin. Gandalf also knows the Witch King isnt something to play with. As he also is 1200 years old.

But that would mess up the story...
Kanig94 1 year ago
I always hated peter jackson for the way they made this scene. Gandalf should of owned the witch king no contest. How can aragon chase him away with a torch and gandalf get owned?? the nine riders are afraid of fire and are weak against it and seeing as how gandalf has the ring of fire he should of wiped him :)

@Morrigan1487 Lol Gandalf could easily wipe that ghost out of existance. This was just a fault of the moviemakers. Gandalf would kick his ass.
jamesx6x 1 year ago
@jamesx6x
Eird 1 year ago
@Eird Gandalf defeated what 5 Nazgul at weathertop, in fotr, has died and returned with more power then when he was Gandalf the grey and cannot defeat a wraith whose chief power was fear. By logic of the movies Eowyn is greater than Witch King who is greater than Gandlalf who is greater than the Balrog who is greater than Aragorn ("Swords are no more use here"). So really the Fellowship should have stopped in Rohan and picked up Eowyn.
51Jakester 1 year ago 19
@51Jakester
Eird 1 year ago
@Eird
If Merry were wielding a "normal sword" it would be as tall as him. You seem to have forgotten that he's a hobbit and therefore a knife would be sword-sized for him.
Mathemagical55 1 year ago
@Mathemagical55
I wasn't talking about sword size. I meant the knife he had in the book had spells on it that were designed to fight the witch king, whereas the short sword he got in Rohan didn't. I didn't mean he had a normal sword as in the size was the same.
Eird 1 year ago
@51Jakester Good analysis, I'm with ya
arielhentai08 1 year ago
@arielhentai08 TY, PJ wanted to show the increase in the WK's strength. So I think a better scene would have a group of soldiers accompanying Gandalf and when The WK casts his spell(?) the soldiers and Pippen are cast down and their spears shattered but Gandalf remains horsed and when the Wk draws his sword Gandalf draws his. The soldiers and Pippin get up to rush the Wk but draw back at the fell beasts roar. Then the horns of the Rohirrim.
51Jakester 1 year ago
@51Jakester Again, I'm with ya. How can them even think of putting Gandalf's image like that, come on there's no matach. And some people are still thinking about Gandalf vs. Dumbledore...

MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@MultiKillerBot This is the problem, are we talking about PJ's version or what was in the book? Sadly PJ's version has become "The Lord of the Rings" to many. First off No one entered past the Main Gate after it was broken cept the Witch King and he left upon hearing the Rohirrim. Tolkien hints in his books the Gondoran soldiers were each equal to 10 orcs, Remember they are descendants of Tolkien's Atlanteans. For example Elendil was 7' tall, Aragorn 6.5 ' tall not the shrimps we see here.
51Jakester 1 year ago
@51Jakester MMM , yes that was a problem , but then again , P.J , made an elite orc horde , in the books yes the Gondorians picked them off easily ,but in the movie he made the orcs stronger then the urukhai , and called them uberorc and wore armor similar to the easterlings . Remember Gondor in the movie only had 5,000 troops because they didnt get the 2,000 from the belfalas .
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@51Jakester Also the siege started way too early in the movie , in the book the siege starts at midnight or almost in the movie like 6 hours earlier . And remeber Gondor was in a state of decline and only the ithileen rengers and the Tower Guard were of numenorean descent .
MultiKillerBot 1 year ago
@51Jakester
Eowyn could only defeat the with king because Eowyn was a woman. Glorfindel's prophecy was that the witch king would not fall by the hand of man
sammygee17 1 year ago
@sammygee17 No one is denying Eowyns role. It is the WK's overpowering of Gandalf. Again Gandalf defeated 5 Nazgul (including the WK) at weathertop and has returned after his death defeating the Balrog even more stronger.
51Jakester 1 year ago
@51Jakester you have a point, but i dont think its really as simple as that.

thezieg1 1 year ago
@thezieg1 Read the book. Days earlier before Aragorn and the hobbits were there Gandalf battled five of the Nazgul including the Witch King.
51Jakester 1 year ago
Your missing some key points, at the time of the battle at weathertop the Witch King was a Wraith!! Before the battle of Gondor the Witch King was returned to FLESH and his full power restored.
The Witch King was no joke, much of the magic of Gandalf came from Arnor. A country distroyed by Angmar the nation of the Witch King. With the aid of his mount the battle would of most likely ended in the Witch King's victory.

I've never seen this scene before, and have to say it beats all the others in its disappointment. In the book, the Witch-King rides into Minas Tirith after Grond breaks the gate, and all flee before him save Gandalf, who defies him - as opposed to here where Gandalf seems to be worsted.
Campana2222 2 years ago
what is going on? In the book, Gandalf is going to meet the Witch King, but something happens and they end up not fighting. No way could Witch King destroy his staff, much less beat him.
But regardless of who would win, how was Peter Jackson going to account in the rest of the film for Gandalf's lack of staff? They cut this bit but in the following bits he has a staff. Was he just going to have staffless Gandalf for the rest of the film?
PPX14 2 years ago
Probably an attempt to tie-in the shattering of Gandalf's staff, which they entirely omitted from FOTR.........
cmc10101 2 years ago
when does that happen? I can't remember.
PPX14 2 years ago
His staff was splintered when he struck it on the bridge at Khazad Dum....in the book.
cmc10101 1 year ago
oh, yeah I forgot, and I guess he doesn't get a new one like in the film
PPX14 1 year ago
Actually, in the book, it is repaired by the elves.
cmc10101 1 year ago
oh right. still, what's going on in this clip? why on Earth are they suggesting the Nazgul leader is more powerful than Gandalf? And how do they get around the fact they cut this out - does he not have his staff later on in the film?
PPX14 1 year ago
@PPX14
the scene was cut out.. its not in the extended version

Oh, and i just remembered that we do see Gandalf doing lightning strike. That too the old Gandalf(against Balrog). =P I forgot!!

Also the author should have made Gandalf do more fancy stuff. All he does in the whole trilogy is make his wand-staff thingy glow. I wanted to see fireball, lightning strike, wizard blast, and you know really graphical fancy things.
nutroot 2 years ago
Try to read the introduction of the LOTR. There was an entry there regarding the role of "magic" in the story. Tolkien made it a part of the story, an important element, but not it's crux. Magic here is more subtle, not the kind you see in kiddie stuffs.
1981regie 2 years ago
@nutroot your critisisms of tolkien prove that you fail! Gandalf is capable of doing 'magic' if you call it that, but thats not why he was sent to middle-earth. the istari (gandalf, saruman, the 2 blue wizards and the other whos name escapes me) all were sent to fight sauron, but not to become leaders. the idea was that the istari would educatate the men of the west so they would be able to control middle earth when the elves depart. only gandalf stayed to this cause whilst the others didnt

Sunriel 2 years ago
Ah not really, despite the immense power that he has acquired from Sauron, he still doesn't compare to the Resurrected Gandalf. When gandalf was "sent back" he has significantly increased in power, a real Maia will always be more powerful than any corrupted wraith.
