Good review, guys. It's nice to know that you went into this film with an open mind. It's a shame so many fans of the Swedish films are shunning this film. I can understand why they wouldn't want to see it but I say give it a chance! :)
It's not a remake, rather an adaptation from the book. The story dramatically departs from the swedish version, most notably the ending. To suggest that Fincher wanted to remake the first film—which in my opinion is mediocre at best—is an insult. This is a fresh interpretation of the story, using the book (not the other film) as his source.
Mara is Lisbeth Salander; whereas Rapace by comparison—let's be honest—has about as much talent as a wooden doll.
They are planning to the trilogy. Steven Zailian already finished the script for "The Girl Who Played With Fire". Everyone is coming back, Fincher is tentative, but most likely to come back. They are just waiting to see how the first one does before they green light the sequels.
@AmadeusExcello I just never saw the point. It never felt like it added anything to the source material. That is one thing that "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" does, by expanding the story and addressing issues from the original.
What's the difference between Rooney Mara and Wayne Rooney?
None - they both kick balls!

"Let Me In" is a competent re-make and a fine film in its own right.
