在蔣時代，台灣人不僅被政治專制，還被當作二等公民。不少台灣人因說台語而被罰款，如講台語是低俗的,有的還被掛上牌子在操場罰跑，直至他抓到另外一個說台語的為止。美國也曾有族群問題，其解決方式不僅是結束黑奴制度，廢止不許黑人同乘白人共車的歧視規定，還在於白人要向黑人道歉，在心理上族裔平等。

今天，蔣家專制已被結束，但以外省人為主的國民黨不僅沒有為他們歧視本地人的劣行道歉，而且仍有不少人仍把自己視為「貴族」而高人一等。這是台灣至今存在族群問題的根本原因之一。台灣在日本放棄主權撤退之初，人民真的欣喜欲狂，期待異族統治的終結及回歸祖國所能得到的尊嚴生活。

陳水扁以大半生精力使台灣民主化，他勝利了。由於台灣己民主化，不再是兩蔣威權時代公私不分而無人敢置喙，貪污腐化會被揭發被追究，所以他才會被捕。 他有份創造出令自己被捕的民主機制，這就叫做命運的弔詭。陳水扁被捕，看在中共官員眼中，是政權轉移，失去權勢，貪污腐化就會被追究。他們會因此叫自己不要貪污，還是會更加害怕中國民主化？
