By far one of the most excellent performance of this aria in relation to the singer (Scholl), the costumes and setting - it is a package which all comes together to make something that is without a doubt nothing but superb.
I have high hopes for this production (which I haven't seen in full yet). I love updatings, but I hate updatings which try to be modern and traditional at the same time (i.e. The Met's Faust which is in 1945 in USA but has the soldiers wearing 1800 French uniforms, or Glyndebourne's Giulio Cesare, set around 1900 but which has Cesare (Sarah Connolly) wear a full Greek armor plate). This one seems to be a thorough, well-done updating. Plus it's Andreas Scholl!!!
The tempo is ferfect. Scholl is perfect. But all this modernistic crap? Wagners Walkuries are now always portraied as motorcyclists. Original? No! Oh, how I long for a more genuine performance. That would be a sensation in these days. Back to the sources, please! Singers with wigs!
@achantus1 yes!! I agree 100% with you there! The soul of the music is from the 18th century, and in that time all the operas were visually set in the 18th century too (they didn't even try to set it in the time of Julius Caesar) .. modernist settings for me just do not match the music whatsoever .. does anyone know why the one guy is wearing a skirt, no top and a leopard-skin jacket? it is completely ridiculous ..

Funky! The first time I saw this on danish tv - my wife and daugther gave a scream - the contrast of Scholls masculine apperance - Rolex, uniform and all - and contra tenor - dear me ;-) The music has a swing to it- the hornplayer is fantastic- Scholl is Motherfucker!!
what is the setting of this scene? In Caesar or Tolomeo's palace? In another video it's set in Tolomeo's palace but it's not clear which one this is - because I have to analyze this video. And why did Tolomeo spill the drink on the server?

Hahaha, I like Handel. I like Andreas Scholl. I like him singing "Bist du bei mir" too. So enjoyable. I don't have the chance to see opera in Europe so I thank you for posting.
Excellent aria and opera, yes... but there are 41 more operas one better as the next!! See Xerxes, Acis and Galatea, Samson, and so on. Hail Händel forever and ever

Yes, that is what I was eluding. I intended to file that comment under another comment that mocked Mr. Scholl's voice. I was merely stating that it is not possible for most men to sing full voice in that range (unless castrated). I know it is falsetto, and wish you would not call me stupid, simply because you think I don't understand.
A mi me fascina!
I do love Scholl's voice, as always, but think the error here is in the balance. This is supposed to be a duet between the horn and the voice. The orchestra as a whole need to tone it down, especially the bass, as the horn is getting lost. It is the interplay between the horn and the voice which should create the atmosphere in this piece
FWIW, that exact balance that you describe leapt out at me when I listened to this for the first time. My first and most powerful impression was the horns, and how his voice and they kept trading off. So the effect definitely came through, especially to someone who hadn't heard the aria before.
You are correct. Keep in mind, the 'live' performance will sound entirely different from a compressed audio production as heard, here. A recording engineer can increase or decrease the volume of each sound track from where the microphones are placed. Obviously, the horn player was not privy to a microphone. Although , is was not necessary. The audience heard this presentation as you suggested.
negative comments about Scholl duly noted, I find it a first-rate performance. the staging makes clear that they want him to appear confident and powerful, and thats what i think hes going for- but if you wanted tension, you sure don't have it.
Agreed -- they didn't want Tolomeo to really come across as someone to be taken seriously just yet. That was rather nice; he's revealed as increasingly slimy and much more dangerous as time goes on, which gives him (Tolomeo) a perceived character evolution that he lacks otherwise.
I like this rendition of this aria. You don't have to be an expert as to what is happening. The performance is sound and the staging is good. Very enjoyable. Thanks.

Great!Morituri te salutant!! many women can sing this but it´s not the same listening Jennifer Larmore (Royal Theatre of Madrid, Nov. 2002) to Andreas Scholl for sure!

Scholl, while a very skilled countertenor, always leaves me cold. There is so little emotion when he sings. Especially as compared to Michael Chance, David Daniels and Daniel Taylor.
But in Dov'e sei, amato bene, no one can touch Scholl. "emotion" is different things to different listeners. For me, Daniels is hard to take because his voice is so imprecise. Yes, histrionically Daniels is impressive, but at the expense of the runs. Plus, I find he barks a bit when he needn't ("Ombra mai fu"? Why? It's about a tree!) Still, fine singers, all, to be sure.
Thank-you for your response! Perhaps I should like to compare Scholl's usual renditions(particularly in opera & oratorio) to the ultimate countertenor (my preference in every genre) Michael Chance. And you are quite correct in your alluding to the fact that we all perceive and react very differently to music, especially to that of the human voice.
I agree with 32Styx, this performance was almost sterile. I didn't hear any of the tension of a warrior who is trapped in the den of his adversary, in Scholl's voice. I know Scholl can put an astonishing range of expression in his voice, I've heard him do it on other occasions, but this here wasn't his best moment.
Well, at least the french horn player was excellent, whoever he was.
It's good to know that someone else feels the same way about this rendition. It seems that ANY criticism of Scholl is like raising a 'red flag' in front of some listeners.
I know what you mean, but there's even worse. Try saying anything critical about Glenn Gould around here. Now, that's where you'll have to run for your live. :-D
Many fans of classical music are no better than football fans. Touch their holy cow and they'll break your bones.
I saw this performence on Tv one of my friends went to Copenhagen to write about the this performence for a newspaper as a critical, he return two times to watch the opera. And I understand him after that I saw it on television. It was great. I loved the bas singer and Andreas vocie
nice!i love Scholl.handel,i love you too,Giulio Cesare is one of his most popular operas,i have ever listened to other versions and i think this one is better.scholl is divine!

Hail Händel forever and ever

raulfernandezg 2 years ago
What are you talking about? Have you actually tried singing that high in full voice without being castrated? Last time I checked, it doesn't happen.

are you stupid...it's called falsetto
Hanselvongretel 2 years ago
Yes, that is what I was eluding. I intended to file that comment under another comment that mocked Mr. Scholl's voice. I was merely stating that it is not possible for most men to sing full voice in that range (unless castrated). I know it is falsetto, and wish you would not call me stupid, simply because you think I don't understand.

A mi me fascina!
nancyfi 2 years ago

What a voice !!!!!!
DynVec 3 years ago
I do love Scholl's voice, as always, but think the error here is in the balance. This is supposed to be a duet between the horn and the voice. The orchestra as a whole need to tone it down, especially the bass, as the horn is getting lost. It is the interplay between the horn and the voice which should create the atmosphere in this piece
beckyberridge 3 years ago 2
FWIW, that exact balance that you describe leapt out at me when I listened to this for the first time. My first and most powerful impression was the horns, and how his voice and they kept trading off. So the effect definitely came through, especially to someone who hadn't heard the aria before.
janiscortese 3 years ago
You are correct. Keep in mind, the 'live' performance will sound entirely different from a compressed audio production as heard, here. A recording engineer can increase or decrease the volume of each sound track from where the microphones are placed. Obviously, the horn player was not privy to a microphone. Although , is was not necessary. The audience heard this presentation as you suggested.

orchestra is outstanding.
negative comments about Scholl duly noted, I find it a first-rate performance. the staging makes clear that they want him to appear confident and powerful, and thats what i think hes going for- but if you wanted tension, you sure don't have it.
blind913 3 years ago 5
Agreed -- they didn't want Tolomeo to really come across as someone to be taken seriously just yet. That was rather nice; he's revealed as increasingly slimy and much more dangerous as time goes on, which gives him (Tolomeo) a perceived character evolution that he lacks otherwise.
janiscortese 3 years ago
I like this rendition of this aria. You don't have to be an expert as to what is happening. The performance is sound and the staging is good. Very enjoyable. Thanks.

Scholl, while a very skilled countertenor, always leaves me cold. There is so little emotion when he sings. Especially as compared to Michael Chance, David Daniels and Daniel Taylor.
32Styx 3 years ago
But in Dov'e sei, amato bene, no one can touch Scholl. "emotion" is different things to different listeners. For me, Daniels is hard to take because his voice is so imprecise. Yes, histrionically Daniels is impressive, but at the expense of the runs. Plus, I find he barks a bit when he needn't ("Ombra mai fu"? Why? It's about a tree!) Still, fine singers, all, to be sure.
xgianpatrick 3 years ago 2
Thank-you for your response! Perhaps I should like to compare Scholl's usual renditions(particularly in opera & oratorio) to the ultimate countertenor (my preference in every genre) Michael Chance. And you are quite correct in your alluding to the fact that we all perceive and react very differently to music, especially to that of the human voice.
32Styx 3 years ago
I agree with 32Styx, this performance was almost sterile. I didn't hear any of the tension of a warrior who is trapped in the den of his adversary, in Scholl's voice. I know Scholl can put an astonishing range of expression in his voice, I've heard him do it on other occasions, but this here wasn't his best moment.
Well, at least the french horn player was excellent, whoever he was.
Timrath 3 years ago 2
It's good to know that someone else feels the same way about this rendition. It seems that ANY criticism of Scholl is like raising a 'red flag' in front of some listeners.
32Styx 3 years ago 2
I know what you mean, but there's even worse. Try saying anything critical about Glenn Gould around here. Now, that's where you'll have to run for your live. :-D

Really? You didn't hear any tension? But I do hear dignity of his interpretation. I don't like exaggerator in performance.
Totanz 3 years ago 2
I hear lots of tension, but it's all coming from the orchestra. I agree on the dignity, though.

Scholl's performance was pretty good. However is it just me or is the orchestra rather off on the music? It just didn't sound right.

I saw this performence on Tv one of my friends went to Copenhagen to write about the this performence for a newspaper as a critical, he return two times to watch the opera. And I understand him after that I saw it on television. It was great. I loved the bas singer and Andreas vocie
