the TS9 reissue I had, had the ta75558p chip, it sounded a bit different from the maxon OD9, it had more gain, and a nice sweet spot when you dig in. The maxon OD9 seems to have more bottom end as well. Both nice pedals. I just had to opportunity to A/B them and sold the TS9.
I really love those Fender Twins and am thinking of getting one reissue. I play mostly at home and on small venues. I play clean with pedals on top like you.
Question is around volume. At home volumes, being that an 85W amp, isn't the Twin a bit big? :-) At volumes 1,2,3 do the valves even move?
I just received a stock TS9 in trade and as soon as I get everything straightened out I will be sending it off to Mike for his Silver mod. I also have a Way Huge Green Rhino on it's way to me which is a take on the classic TS circuit. I also use a Twin Reverb although mine is a Reissue. I love those Blackface era Fenders although I do love Tweeds as well. Great demo and playing!
You explained everything in perfect detail...thank you soo much for making this video!
I also have been bit by the Tubescreamer bug recently...it was the final addition to my 3 od pedalboard set up, and I've never been happier! (TS9-->OCD-->Keeley BD-2)I use the TS9 at practically the same setting as you and the BD-2, with all its clarity, is the final "solo boost" to push things out front.
Keep this videos coming bro, you have a knack for teaching these crucial sound nuances!
Thanks Scott, really appreciate the replies! I've probably listened to this 15 times.... trying to get this base tone with my Tone King Metropolitan today as I LOVE the sound of your Twin. Pretty close, had my bright switch on but was thinking that OD with bright on was a no-no. Glad to see I'm not the only one!
Thinking hard about an Analogman silver or the TS808HW for my first Tube Screamer (might as well start with the good stuff!).
@MeMota Oh yeah, I had the bright switch engaged. I usually have them turned on with any amp and then dial the treble knob back a bit. That's how I start playing, at least; I may change it based on how that particular amp responds but if I plug into an amp for the first time, the bright switch is turned on and I dial the treble back a bit.
did you mail in your ts9 or buy an already modded one from analogman. I wanna get a ts9 but dont know if i am better off purchasing one from GC for 100 and mailing it in and paying the 75 for silver mod plus shipping or just buying the already modded ts9 off his site for 200 with shipping included. what you think?
@CiDTeaFace I bought mine new straight from his site. In the end it seemed to be about the same and I prefer to give my money to the little guy rather than the massive corporate conglomerate :)
Holy crap! I'm a huge Fender guy too, love brightness and clarity, but MAN! You're not kidding about those JBLs =o Your mic's off-axis and everything... yeesh... Good demo, tho. Just wish I had the money for, uhh, any part of that rig:P:D Peace.
I bought a 12ax7 tube overdrive pedal that I've been playing around with lately...I'll try to post a demo. I think I'm likin it! It's basically a tube preamp...
Which one did you get? I picked up a Butler Tube Driver the other day but don't have a power supply to test it out yet. Changing out the tube BTW will massively affect the tone.
I got some Chinese thing "Biyang" off of ebay to give it a whirl. They take a pretty big power supply...usually around an amp or better. You can pick one up at radio shack for about 30 bucks, but take the pedal with you if you go because RS only gives you 1 tip for the PS so you'll need to match it.
I've only gotten the chance to play through the 20th anniv. There's a guy in Dallas selling one of 100w Tri-Amp with two 4x12s but sheesh - that's way above what I want to carry around :)

some people spend like hundreds of $s on boutique stuff, a TS9 (OD9) does it just as well :)

I had a 90s TS9 reissue, sold it and got a new Maxon OD9 (JRC chip, maxon electronics equal to the 80s TS9s)

i just love that!!! xD

Again, headroom is what I am looking for.
Thanks a lot,

6packofsteel 1 year ago
@6packofsteel These were 10s - the David Gilmour GHS brand. I like the brightness of them, plus they rarely break or have defects.

@MeMota Glad to see you like it - the silver analogman is the best TS to my ears but that may be because I've not heard the HW TS808!

So if I understand you correctly, you don't like the Analogman TS9 with your vox but you love it with your Fender Twin?

I imagine that, if the 12AX7 is ever too much (ha!), you could put a 12AY7 in to cream up the sound.

Hey man...that's a great idea! Less gain, but less "color"... I might just try that... thanks.
