I don't care about this. I still love Mackye's work, I am still Straight Edge, and I still think Edge is a good thing. Of course it's unfortunate that some used it as an excuse to hurt people. But that is what people do. Simply being clean doesn't automatically out you above the herd.
@LiberalismIsALie Bullshit. First, I don't believe that was in rolling stone. 2nd, what are you doing reading rolling stone? And 3rd, why would you believe rolling stone anyway.
this is why I stay away from other so called straight edgers, they tell you what you should do and what not do. I claim edge in my own image bound by 3 simple rules: NO smoking, drinking, or doing drugs. I agree with Ian on this. Militants are dumbasses anyways there's a reason why they're a dying breed
@09DevilKiller Ian is an intelligent guy and whether he was straight edge, crooked edge, or whatever, he makes a lot of sense. Unfortunately I think militant behavior in any group will not die out. People use these movements of any kind to justify their shitty behavior.
Ian, you are an inspiration! I've listened to your music for years; and it never get's old. You inspire me to seek recovery and happiness. One day I will be Straight Edge!
@maximilian4050 Go for it, makes me happy. I am heartbroken by the amount of mates who died young and are fucked up because of booze and illegal drugs. If you get out you will have happiness and wisdom you never thought possible!
@thegrandjew Not really, its mostly about an Occupy camp in my hometown. There is a blog on booze that took me ages and I would like people to read. I don't want to turn the world Straight Edge
@thegrandjew I don't think making drugs illegal helps. How many people would bother doing crack if it was legal tomorrow who wouldn't do it anyway? Most people do drugs to escape or be one of the crowd, then often become addicts. The addicts are victims too. Ancient people did drugs in a different context and with respect. Make conditions where people have more respect for themselves and others and people may stop poisoning themselves. The drug laws are a chaotic joke.
@thegrandjew Try not fucking with any of it. I'm probably older than you and seen too many awful things. Selling out is thinking life is crap, getting high then not making your (or any one else's) life any better.
I have done research on caffeine, sugar and booze. Caffeine is pretty harmless compared to even sugar and sugar is addictive and very unhealthy. Poor guy just had an opinion then turned into a punk Jesus! Following other people is the opposite to punk. I was influenced by Fugazi's ideas but what made me really straight edge was real life. Look on my channel for more details.
the reason youd get asked that so much is probably cause like 90 % of edgers do it for the ego trip and then when "high school trends" are over they dont really care and give it up
It's about rejecting the intoxication culture. Nobody ever got raped at a party or wrapped their SUV around a telephone pole because they drank a pepsi.
@Pilaf1984 If a woman gets raped, it's not her fault. Being drunk is absolutely disgusting in my eyes, but victim blaming is not acceptable. Women get raped because someone rapes them, not because they're drunk.
@xmalaisedusieclex Good point. Lots of men could rape pissed women but chose not to, why are they different from men who do? I decided getting drunk is stupid so I don't. I tell my daughter not to get drunk, because it is stupid. I have known too many drug addicts to do any drugs and been to two addicts funerals. Don't like the gang rubbish that goes with straight edge but I do live by the rules. Better person for it,
I don't see how anyone listens to this and thinks "douchebag"... the "fuck you" at the end might have been a little unwarranted... But I'm sure that if people took your own personal expression of your life choices, made a pseudo-militant "movement" out of it that totally got the message wrong, and then people bugged you about it for the rest of your life, you'd be fairly pissed off about it too.
@dreadedwheat26 The problem with this "brilliant observation" is that straight edge can not by definition be anti drug. The human body itself produces drugs, like adrenaline or dopamine, when doing things like exercising, eating, listening to music, making love, etc. Straight Edge can not be about never doing any drugs because everything is literally a drug.
MacKaye should be a little more humble, he gave a voice to the then voiceless, but's he's not some God, he's a hardcore vocalist/guitar player. Evolution takes place, people build on the roots, from Vegan Reich to Earth Crisis. I love MT and Fugazi but MacKaye's a fucking prick.
@LeviAAA I know what your saying. This man's ideas are very important to me. I lived with a total addict on a council estate and watched people ruin their lives. Getting off your head is an escape. It's not helping anyone make their lives better. Alcohol and bad food are shoved down our throats as a treat we deserve, it harms us and our lives. I had heard of Fugazi and straight edge but I had to live a little to follow the rules.Love the rules, hate the bullshit!
how is he a douche bag? he's talking down on the bull shit straight edgers that turn it into a militant movement, and beat people the fuck up and shit like that.
all he's saying is he doesn't wan't his words contributed into violence, and it's ridiculous how much attention the violent scene has gotten. Also, him getting annoyed when people ask if he's still edge. Like who the fuck would ask Ian Mackaye if he's still Edge? The caffeine thing is stupid too, it's not like you see fucking iced tea ruining peoples life now do you? he's not being a douche, in my opinion.
I knew Ian in 81 and experienced the inception of.DC hardcore. Ian is genuine and refused to follow the path of opportunistic pompous types like Brian Baker.
@CaseyAnthonysArmy You're calling Ian Mackaye a "douche bag" (which is a total irrelevant and stupid insult) and you're user name is "CaseyAnthonysArmy". Are you fucking joking? You're the "douche bag" here. That cunt killed her daughter. Dumb cunt.
the one thing i dont like about the straight edge scene is that it tends to be very strict in its tendencies...there are drugs that have been proven to help certain people, depending on the circumstances they are living under. im not putting down or condoning drugs, im just saying that people should open their minds before they simply indulge in or completely shut themselves off from the reality of drugs.find out for YOURSELVES. research leads to knowledge and knowledge leads to the truth.
@catholicgirlmustache I went straight edge because of real life, not just because of the movement. I gave up refined sugar because I was using it like a drug. Being strict on myself means I look at the world differently. I researched the subject before giving it up, Like the man says, don't follow him think for yourself! I have done drugs and life is as good without them. Maybe if I hadn't I wouldn't feel so strongly!
I guess this is a touchy subject and my personal sights cannot account for all straight edge followers, but in the city I live in they are extremely immature. They see it as their "god given" scene and pretty much force any younger people from entering. The promote violence against people who do drugs or smoke and ultimately they made me dislike the music scene...really ruined it for me=/ Avid concert attender for many years now not even interested!
haha ian is quite two-faced at times. he´s big-hearted and humble at the same time as he would tell a "really young kid" something like that. love him though.
im sure by really young, he meant like 17 or 18...not like 6....and by that age you should be able to take a little bit of criticism, especially if your such a nit picky little fuck head
Ian is awesome. Growing up I was straight edge n didn't know it.. I just didn't need drugs n booze to have a good time it took forever for me to even like the taste of alcohol.. Years later I just do shit in moderation and respect anyone who has the discipline to avoid excess.
agree. i'm straight edge, but i could not give a fuck what the guy next to me does. i have friends who drink and smoke and do drugs but i don;t care, because its my own thing. i also refuse to draw x's on my hands or anything like that because i don't need to prove my shit to anyone else.
@CheapHomemadeProdux Totally feel you on that, I fuckin' hate people who feel the need to group up and fuck with people who are different from them. Especially when they do it based on their misconception of wise words and then use those words as a scapegoat for their own ignorance.
Fuck being spiritual. Its all mumbo jumbo BS anyway. The only truth is that none of this matters in the long run because we all die and no life is anymore important then the rest. Shut up and enjoy the little time you have and stop arguing over this type of crap, which doesn't matter anyway.
@iamboring000 since when is agreeing with someone considered arguing?? youre the one arguing... i respect the straightedge ideals but to each his own...
Interesting guy. Can't say I agree with him on singing about subjects that are violent or even celebrate violence. Art should never be constrained by the same code as life. That said. I would have trouble sleeping that night if I felt I influenced people to do bad things.
I am not doggin him, I seen it, it was fucked, but some people like in hardcore just fade away. Cut the tie let him go, hell even he want to just fade from that scene.
He spoke at a cafe in Denver colorado. I worked there at the time years back I dont smoke that shit I was shocked that he smoked with my co-worker whom he has known for years. I was disgusted and shocked, it was like seeing members of infest smoke weed as a kid. My eyes was my proof, how the mighty fall. Thats why singers and bands really are not that important anymore. In life all you got is you and your heart. He's a nice guy still though
Psychedelics can and will change your life, by making you lose your fucking mind, You wanna be more spiritual? go to a church, or a temple, or a mosque, or a monestary, and think for yourself, is this what I REALLY want and need? dont let fucking drugs do it for you! you wanna be open minded? read up on other cultures, you wanna be an individual? dont follow the crowd, by drugging yourself up, I am not for violence, but I am not for Pot either.
@upWITpeople So would getting involved in good charity work, or a deep personal relationship with another human being, or really intense exercise, etc. There's more than one route to happiness. I prefer the ones that don't necessarily come in packages.
@poptartcasualty If psychedelics are abused then they can cause some damage. IMO I think they should be used as a catalyst to open your mind and to discover a lot about ones self. I think what gives psychedelics a bad name is the people that just take them to get "fucked up". It's obviously clear that the type of people that use it to feel good rather than the ones that use it to open their minds are D-bags that just use them to fit in.
@upWITpeople They're definitely not for everybody. Quit being so assumptive and generalizing about their affects. Everyone reacts to them differently.
Psychedelics do nothing but cause you to hallucinate and be fooled into thinking you're having some outer-dimensional experience. Everyone wants a quick result without putting any effort or work into it. If you want true spiritual experience, learn how to quiet your mind and meditate. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself.
Ian MacKaye is NOT straight edge and he wasn't the inventor or creator. He simply just wrote a song that expressed his feelings during the whole dirty punk scene. He called it straight edge and people got inspired by it.
@moshxking : wtf .. this guy is like the inventor of straight edge , and your name is based on "hardcore-music". Please know your history before you post something lame like that. Have some respect for people who know what they're talking about.
I like to assosciate myself with the SxE movement but not the militants. I don't mind people drinking and smoking, it's their life. I'm not gonna be the prick who beats some kid up for experimenting with alcohol. Sure, I've drunk before. I've been there and I just didn't like drinking. Hence why I'm SxE, the militants have this all wrong.
I refuse to associate myself with SxE, and this vid really helped cement those feelings :) The whole "movement" thing is fucked. I don't do drugs and I don't drink, but I'm doing it for me!
All those straightedge militant nazis should be shitting in their pants when they find out that they got it all wrong. Shame, Shame. Thanks Ian for speaking some sense into the culture finally, but you should have done it sooner.
it's terrible how something intended to be pure became so violent and militant, like Mackaye has said in past interviews about sxe. "it means i'm straight in the head" not "YEAH BRO LETS BEAT THOSE SMOKERS UP FOR SMOKING AT OUR SHOW" that's not what true edge is. it's about fighting with your heart against the choices that some people make to get fucked up and drink and get high, not fight against those who make those choices. its about being apart of something great, not this militant bullshit
so you think he's a sell out, i think you're a sell out, you think you're so good with your name 'moshxking' i hope someone is going to beat you up int pit you bitch
Anyone who uses violence or actually believes that violence can change the beliefs of others doesn't understand what straight edge was about in the first place: an individual's choice to maintain their ability to control their actions instead of allowing substances to interfere with that process. Ian MacKaye is an inspiration to us all.
Very well stated, straight from the horses mouth so to speak.
and when I talk to ppl about it myself, I often quote what Captain Barbados(from POTC) had to say about the Pirates Code "It's more like guidelines, than actual rules" in which these are individual guidelines, or should be anyways.
every straight edge kid ever should see this. Most straightedge i've met are like born again christians pushing their beliefs on others. I lived with a sXe kid from Boston. Christ.
this guy is pretty stupid and white when he implies that rap music inspires niggers to kill each other.
people involved in drug dealing and other illegal horseshit aren't killing others because of a rap song but rather because they think they need to in order to not get caught or to protect themselves.
although i believe that white people usually go on shooting sprees after listening to stupid shit like eminem
@gauchebag He didnt say 'Niggers' go and kill someone cause of rap lyrics, he didnt specify what race the killer might be, loads of white kids listen to rap and there are some kids that will and have gone out and done some stupid shit because of their music choice...
im pretty sure Ian's old enough and experienced enough to know the difference between an everyday drive by shooting in Compton or a drug deal gone bad in the projects as opposed to a 'trench coat mafia' type of nutcase
What's the point of sxe? What, you want to basically live a semi-Christian life, but take Christ out of it? No drinking, no drugs, no sex... And where does that get you? I think I'd rather live for Christ than label myself straight edge.
@elementskaterxl Not doing drugs has nothing to do with christianity and it was never billed in that way. "And where does that get you" I know that's not a question, but it's just a personal choice. Most people who don't do do drugs don't even make a deal out of it or called themselves straight edge.
@FroDolla The edge movement is what's dumb. What's the point of painting Xs on hands or labeling yourself just to show people you don't do drugs. I can see the purpose of having it in lyrics, but the whole scene is pointless.
@elementskaterxl i dunno whats the point of dressing like a tool and going to nightclubs getting drunk.."the whole scene is pointless"....whats the point of wearing budweiser shirts and marijuana belts..i dont fucking know because its what your into...im into NOT being like people like you so I'll wear my Earth Crisis shirt and not associate with retards.
@dickhornymouth I don't know where you got the idea that I do drugs or whatever, because I don't. I just think the edge movement is pointless. I'll put it this way: When I meet someone new, or see people in general, I assume that they don't do drugs. Only once they give me reason to suspect it, is when I start thinking that. I guess at my high school there were a lot of drug users, but I just chose not to associate with them. College changes things because druggies don't get very far.
Self control with substance use shows more maturity and responsibility than an outright rejection. I recently broke edge a few weeks ago and absolutely don't regret it, realizing i possessed the self control to use substance without it being detrimental i started consuming it. Many things in life are poisons, but alcohol being a poison can be naturally metabolized and processed by the body in reasonable amount. It's all about moderation in everything you do, whether you're straight edge or not.
thanks to inside straight edge for giving edge a negative image. now not all the time do we use words to hurt other individuals, but some times its them who look for the problems, i never let people dis me or edge, i let people live their lives however they want just dont push me, on the other hand i dis posi kids who run their mouths about drinking coke or taking meds is breaking edge, thats bullshit!!
@Chocobowill - exactly what is it you're resisting, buddy? The miniscule 2% of the human population that are straight edge? Do you really think self destruction is rebellious? How cool is it to do the same things your parents and grandparents did? It doesn't seem very punk to me.
@kevin2849 - What's "bad" language anyway? Just another lie pushed by society. Why can't I say "shit" whereas "defaecate" is perfectly acceptable? Same fucking thing. Society pushes so much bullshit and so many lies. The real spirit of straight edge is recognizing bullshit wherever it raises its ugly head - and that includes other straight edge kids when they treat it like a religion. They're as full of shit as anyone.
I don't care about this. I still love Mackye's work, I am still Straight Edge, and I still think Edge is a good thing. Of course it's unfortunate that some used it as an excuse to hurt people. But that is what people do. Simply being clean doesn't automatically out you above the herd.

haha ian is quite two-faced at times. he´s big-hearted and humble at the same time as he would tell a "really young kid" something like that. love him though.

im sure by really young, he meant like 17 or 18...not like 6....and by that age you should be able to take a little bit of criticism, especially if your such a nit picky little fuck head

He use to be so straight edge
Ieatpancakeseveryday 11 months ago
Ian is awesome. Growing up I was straight edge n didn't know it.. I just didn't need drugs n booze to have a good time it took forever for me to even like the taste of alcohol.. Years later I just do shit in moderation and respect anyone who has the discipline to avoid excess.
icbm777 11 months ago
agree. i'm straight edge, but i could not give a fuck what the guy next to me does. i have friends who drink and smoke and do drugs but i don;t care, because its my own thing. i also refuse to draw x's on my hands or anything like that because i don't need to prove my shit to anyone else.

Fuck being spiritual. Its all mumbo jumbo BS anyway. The only truth is that none of this matters in the long run because we all die and no life is anymore important then the rest. Shut up and enjoy the little time you have and stop arguing over this type of crap, which doesn't matter anyway.

Interesting guy. Can't say I agree with him on singing about subjects that are violent or even celebrate violence. Art should never be constrained by the same code as life. That said. I would have trouble sleeping that night if I felt I influenced people to do bad things.

Pilaf1984 1 year ago
@upWITpeople yea it will also fry your brain and with in a the first few tries you'll begin a breakdown and irreversible damage
poptartcasualty 9 months ago
@poptartcasualty If psychedelics are abused then they can cause some damage. IMO I think they should be used as a catalyst to open your mind and to discover a lot about ones self. I think what gives psychedelics a bad name is the people that just take them to get "fucked up". It's obviously clear that the type of people that use it to feel good rather than the ones that use it to open their minds are D-bags that just use them to fit in.

@upWITpeople They're definitely not for everybody. Quit being so assumptive and generalizing about their affects. Everyone reacts to them differently.

@WorldGenocide55

I like to assosciate myself with the SxE movement but not the militants. I don't mind people drinking and smoking, it's their life. I'm not gonna be the prick who beats some kid up for experimenting with alcohol. Sure, I've drunk before. I've been there and I just didn't like drinking. Hence why I'm SxE, the militants have this all wrong.
gobbitop554 1 year ago 2

it's terrible how something intended to be pure became so violent and militant, like Mackaye has said in past interviews about sxe.

Anyone who uses violence or actually believes that violence can change the beliefs of others doesn't understand what straight edge was about in the first place: an individual's choice to maintain their ability to control their actions instead of allowing substances to interfere with that process. Ian MacKaye is an inspiration to us all.

this guy is pretty stupid and white when he implies that rap music inspires niggers to kill each other.
people involved in drug dealing and other illegal horseshit aren't killing others because of a rap song but rather because they think they need to in order to not get caught or to protect themselves.
although i believe that white people usually go on shooting sprees after listening to stupid shit like eminem
gauchebag 1 year ago

I think I'd rather live for Christ than label myself straight edge.
elementskaterxl 1 year ago
@elementskaterxl Not doing drugs has nothing to do with christianity and it was never billed in that way. "And where does that get you" I know that's not a question, but it's just a personal choice. Most people who don't do do drugs don't even make a deal out of it or called themselves straight edge.
RawwestHide 1 year ago
@elementskaterxl youre dumb as fuck
FroDolla 1 year ago
@FroDolla The edge movement is what's dumb. What's the point of painting Xs on hands or labeling yourself just to show people you don't do drugs. I can see the purpose of having it in lyrics, but the whole scene is pointless.
elementskaterxl 1 year ago
@elementskaterxl i dunno whats the point of dressing like a tool and going to nightclubs getting drunk.."the whole scene is pointless"....whats the point of wearing budweiser shirts and marijuana belts..i dont fucking know because its what your into...im into NOT being like people like you so I'll wear my Earth Crisis shirt and not associate with retards.
dickhornymouth 1 year ago

@Chocobowill - exactly what is it you're resisting, buddy? The miniscule 2% of the human population that are straight edge? Do you really think self destruction is rebellious? How cool is it to do the same things your parents and grandparents did? It doesn't seem very punk to me.
Pilaf1984 1 year ago
@kevin2849 - What's "bad" language anyway? Just another lie pushed by society. Why can't I say "shit" whereas "defaecate" is perfectly acceptable? Same fucking thing. Society pushes so much bullshit and so many lies. The real spirit of straight edge is recognizing bullshit wherever it raises its ugly head - and that includes other straight edge kids when they treat it like a religion. They're as full of shit as anyone.
