  • Wow, do you sell those? If so, how much?

    That's really cool.

  • How about lessons? I live in Indonesia and if I stay here I'd happily pay to learn how to make a bamboo bike.

  • Its a thing of beauty

  • How does the frame weight?

  • bamboo mbt ?

  • Amazing job, Phil Webb! I absolutely LOVE it!!! I want my own!!! God bless you!

  • Do these things break easily?

  • @Rommel5321 No, the bamboo is stronger than aluminum! :D

  • is it safe?

  • @Adiobot

    Very safe!

  • can i jump into the ring of fire with bamboo bike just asking.

  • Queen is awesome! whoever said this song is shit, doesnt know good music! but anyways, i'd LOVE to have one of these, they seem so eco friendly! :D

  • @CeeCeeObscura getting from point a to point b on something powered by apples and bananas is definitely eco friendly ;)

  • is there like a lowrider bike version made with bamboo

  • @mr4toes Not yet, but perhaps yours could be the first.

  • @mr4toes recumbent you mean? yes. look up klaus volkman

  • I just had another thought;

What would happen if you used thin strips of bamboo plus resin instead of carbon fiber at the tubing intersection points?

I think a soft tail would be awesome and I wouldn't care if it were a pound heavier if it meant it would be all bamboo but just as resilient.

  • @Delivered0ne We've tried many concepts, and will continue to do research and development as we move along. The bikes we are delivering today are much different than this proof of concept bike.

We are also developing other components... in due time we will be ready to release for sale.

    Thanks for sharing!

  • Phil, I just perused your website, good stuff all!

Why not consider offering a MountainBike soft-tail similar to the old OOP Ibis Silk Ti, but with geometry closer to the fantastic Bridgestone MB-1?

You could call it the "Peak-a-Boo" !

I'd seriously consider buying one & I'll wager it could be done for <$1000.00 USD including a Fox rear shock.

Then, have the locals build a spectacular World-class off-road trail to bring even more $ to the area also offering wonderful Thai food of course!

  • @Hopstoopider I like the way you think! Keep the ideas coming! We do have some very awesome off-road trails around these parts.

  • YOU BASTAGE!! You get to work in the field most fun on earth AND eat the best food on earth, too!

    So the question is; WHY?

Is it lighter, stronger, stiffer and less expensive than a full carbon fiber tube frame, or is it just more readily available?

How do the two materials compare?

How does Bamboo hold up to wet weather, sunlight, banging against granite & shale rocks & odd-torque-angle crashes in comparison to chromoly, carbon fiber or aluminum?

    -Finally, what's the cost comparison?

  • @Delivered0ne There is a lot of data out there about how strong, tough, and durable bamboo is. (If you were to slam a bamboo frame against a carbon fiber frame... you would loose a carbon fiber frame:) ) Plus, because it is so good at absorbing vibrations, it provides an incredible ride. Processed and finished properly, it will hold up for many years.

Our frames currently start at $799.

  • Ok... Cool design! BUT take off that horrible song! Wow I'm so pissed because I listened to that BS for the whole thing! I'll be sure to mute it next time... But again, great bike! I wouldn't trust it for a big serious triathlon or tour... But recreational would be just fine :)

  • Someone has a grin a mile wide! Thanks for sharing!

  • are all bamboo bike only for commuting?

  • @hallmonitor98

No, they are built for all purposes. I ride a road version, and it's really quick, responsive and confortable. There are a few triathletes on them too.

  • très léger

  • Watch out for woodworms when you ride this bike...

  • @FilippoGatti1991 you gotta just ride faster than the worms.

  • cool, but $800 for the frame? Common! how about pricing a product for common people?

  • @spaggs111

Sorry spaggs111, though we are not in this to make anybody rich, we do need to be able to stay in business. These are high quality, hand made frames, with carbon fiber, top quality bearing, and wheel mounts, and delivered internationally to your door with taxes paid.

Compared to the competition, ours are a bargain!

  • @spaggs111 800$? Thats the cheapest bamboo bike on the market right now.

  • @durianriders and we hope to keep the lowest price to comparable frames. My 25 years with Michelin Tire Research and Development as a design engineer instilled the importance of quality and quality control methods. Our intentions here are to teach the importance of quality to the local people of this developing country. You, the customer, reap some of the benefits of this philosophy.

  • ¿Can you tell me which type (species) of bamboo is the one that worked best for you??

  • @aguiladplata a few local types. We use different species to obtain different results. I only know them by the local Thai names. Come visit us and I can show them to you.

  • i hope this bike will use in tour de france or BMX X games....cool...hahaha

  • What was the final overall weight?

  • @dozzerkid

the first road bike frame weighed in at 1.9 kgs. The latest Hilltribe weighed in at 2.7 kgs.

  • Bro, good stuff!!

  • Bro, good stuff, man!!

  • im wondering if u could make a bmx bike thatd stand up to the pressures of jumping.. if ud reply itd be cool

  • Respond to this video... I do think so.

  • Thank you. This was the prototype in 2008. We have come a long way since then. We are looking for partners to help us accomplish our goals of bringing freedom to folks here in Southeast Asia.

  • @philwebb333 by any chance, can you tell me where to buy lugs? I'd like to make my own bamboo bike, but it doesn't seem that safe to use anything but lugs to hold it together..

  • @NamesROverated

the lugs are hand built at the time of construction.

  • @philwebb333 can you tell me how you affix the crank tube?

  • @NamesROverated Bonded in place with the carbon fiber.

  • What a cool bike. Natural and modern materials, I love it :D

  • dream came true with bamboo

  • Wonderful!

  • It was fun watching this come together! A more than year long dream/idea now a reality!

  • If you come to Sabah (Formerly North Borneo) can you start a week long bamboo bike making workshop here? I wanted to learn the basics so that I could make my own bamboo chopper bike.

  • Hey Phil-

Dude, that is sweet. Will it hold a 225 pound man like me? If I buy one, does it come with a free soundtrack?

    Josh Parsons

  • Thanks Josh-

I believe it will hold you Josh, come on by sometime, we'll get the video camera out, and test it.
