We used to own to holiday houses there when we lived in Westport, one on the very edge of the river. It is so beautiful for swimming and fishing. We used to whitebait there every year. DAMN THE DAM!
my back yard, been in,over, through, all of the place,go into the forks via walkway and chopper most years, fishing and hunting sort of hopin my kids could do the same thing, ruff and tumble flows into the mokihinui and also will suffer thats were the most blue ducks live,no one sees them in there, hope they dont dam it,stocton hydro sceame sounds alot better
We raft and kayak this beautiful river and it would be a real heart break to see it dammed. nztiyoweh is right. damming this river will effect the rare blue duck as it will lose up to 20kms of water way that they live in. lets stand up and show the world we are not a power hungry nation and actually a nation willing to protect what is left before its all gone!
Shame on Meridian! Their propoganda video fails to tell people that blue duck will die, eels will be drowned and home for 20 endangered species will be lost. The coast will erode. There'll be no white water kayaking or rafting. And most of the goldmining history and old pack route will go under. 70% of people oppose. Shame on you Meridian. And even worse, you've made it so that nobody can post comments or rate your video. People power and sensible solutions will win.
This is a great video a matter of "don't tell me, show me" How can any true blue kiwi even think about sacrificing this gem of wilderness rain forest. There are 16 threatened species of bird and fish living in this river system. Flooding a rain forest when there are so many alternatives is insane. We are trying to save our ecosystems not destroy them. Great video, lets have more.
Wrecking environments like Mokihinui, or burning coal are not our only options. NZ's electricity demand doesn't have to keep rising: we must stop wasting power!
Much of what we generate is wasted. Every light or standby appliance you turn off, every 3-minute shower makes a difference!
Other sources will replace gas/coal used today: wind, tidal, waste wood and increasingly-efficient solar.
No way should more pristine rivers like Mokihinui be sacrificed for more electricity for us to fritter away.
I'm not sure how damming a pristine gorge, flooding 330 hectares of conservation land, and wrecking this wilderness river system could ever be sustainable. There ARE other power options out there - we've just got to get smarter. Do we keep sanctioning destruction of our wilderness rivers forever because we're too lazy/afraid to address our power consumption? Crazy - and selfish!
In the short term, New Zealand's energy demand is likely to increase. Our options are to set up reliable and sustainable carbon neutral sources such as hydro, or burn off some (woefully polluting, quintessentially unsustainable) coal. In the medium term, some land will face ecological degradation... but I think the Mokihinu plan makes more sense ecologically than the alternatives.
Look at this beautiful untouched paradise. My god how much of New Zealand needs to be destroyed before people realise you can't undo whats been done. What has happened to keep NZ clean keep it green. I wish people would leave things alone, concentrate on fixing other problems before destroying our home land.
Great video. Interesting choice of song - we have to assume it's hope for the FUTURE generations rather than hope for electrical generation

A full cut is in the works with rafting and kayaking footage and some stunning scenery from inside the gorge. Stay tuned!
Also, check out the Waitaha River short vid. Another stunning river that is threatened by Hydro.
