Any Emerson fans out there interested in owning the gloves he wore in that race? I have the autograph pair i true part of the indycar series. Text me if interested 2107047631
Ironically this crash got me into watching Indycar. The replacement driver (Jan Magnussen) came from an series I'd watched before and in which TV coverage a few words were said about these US motorsports...
*Strong American Accident* - "OH MY GOD! An accident! Oh my god! God bless America! God bless American forms of motorsport, even though they are insipid and laughable when compared to other forms of motorsport. God bless us American commentators with are dodgy accents which are thoroughly inappropriate for this idiotic 'sport' we are commentating on. God bless America!"
@MissEgasMoniz *Strong American accent* "Oh my God! Sweet Lord Jesus! Jesus H Christ! Mother of all that is good and pure! These blasphemous blashphemers who blaspheme on my territory are blasphemous indeed - and lo, beholden onto yourself with pious unpiousness as I utter and mutter into the gutter this phrase; 'God bless America! God bless my strong, pompous and self-righteous American accent! Above all, God bless this utterly tedious and ludicrous form of motorsport I am commentating on."
@xxWhyIsTheRumGonexx because the US 500 which was to compete with the Indy 500 and was heavily hyped as the new crown jewel of American Open Wheel Racing was marred by a lap 1 accident that involved more than half the field, and then on lap 1 of this Michigan race one of the biggest stars of the sport suffered career ending injuries. It was a real blow to the stomach.
@xxWhyIsTheRumGonexx I used to love Formula 1, however to me it's lost much of its luster ever since about the mid 90's. It's a shame because I think the current roster is the most talented overall roster EVER in F1, but the quality of the racing and the direction of the formula is so bad that it ruins it for me. Wish those F1 boys would come race in a non-ecclestone run series then you'd see some real racing.
@erasetoimprove LOL I was just some days ago discussing this issue with one younger Finnish guy (who started watching F1 in 2000) and I told him that the last interesting F1 season was in 1997...
The US 500 never even started before the big wreck...it happened coming to the green, like the start of the '82 Indy 500, but worse. What made it worse, like you said, they were hyping it up as the "REAL 500". Mario Andretti has said many times that they never should have run that race.
@BSNFabricating And CART threw away the rulebook by letting everyone bring out their backup cars as if nothing had happened - don't give me this "the race hadn't started" BS - because they desperately needed some kind of race.
I was saying, they hyped the US 500 up as the race with all the stars, and they couldn't even get to the green flag without a wreck. Given all the publicity, they HAD to do what they did (allowing the teams to use backup cars). Otherwise you would've had a 500-mile race with only a few cars...it would have done more damage to open wheel racing than what had already been done.
NASCAR was already sitting back and watching the trainwreck. They were the real winners in the whole mess.
It would of been a ratings disaster having only about 10 remaining cars to run an entire 500 mile race. They made the right decision to bring out the back ups.
I feel positive Indycar is on the right track right now, getting the new car and getting rid of Barnhart will be great. The thing the series needs most though is to continue to keep the same crop of drivers. There is normaly a big turn over every season, it would help add credability to have the same guys in the series.
The only objection I have about the series right now is that they're doing the same thing CART did -- getting away from the ovals and their roots. Hopefully once they get the new race car perfected, after a year or so, they will start adding back some races like Kentucky, Chicago and others.
It was a huge blow losing Dan Wheldon, and Danica, but the top drivers are still there-- Dario, Helio, Power, Dixon, Briscoe, TK. The sponsors and press have to do a better job promoting them.
@BSNFabricating I agree but after Vegas I would rather see the next few years are dedicated to safety so they can go back to racing at those tracks.
I agree Wheldon and Danica were two of there most known drivers. For now though they need to keep top drivers, as well as potential big stars like Hildebrand and Hinchcliffe. And proven winners like Hunter Reay, Wilson and maybe Conway to a lesser extent. Tracy and Bourdais may not be winning now but they still add name value to.
@BSNFabricating Danica was NOT a star - Indycar gained nothing when she raced there.
Losing Dan Wheldon was tragic, but he just wasn't big enough a name to help the series. When the racing was awesome 2000-2 the series began building names in Sam Hornish, Scott Sharp, and Greg Ray.
The series needs the kind of racing where the cars are nose to nose for the lead for the entirety of the race to help build up name recognition.
The thing Danica did was bring name recognition... Actually she MADE her name in IndyCar. The biggest mistake IndyCar made was hitching their wagon to Danica and not promoting other drivers as well.
When you had drivers like AJ Foyt, Mario Andretti, Rutherford, the Unsers, Mears, Rahal, etc, people could relate to them. A lot of American fans just don't relate to foreign drivers, no matter how successful they are...which is why the series desperately NEEDS more homegrown talent.
@CookProductions1 inst a shame body , just one of his good luck . Well ,after sometime later we got ok. 1* time he should be dead , and on this case , He should never walk.

The Michigan races in 1996 were the most embarrassing races in CART/Indycar history. It was a damn shame.
