  • i can't believe his voice still stays the same. legendary

  • one of my first favorite neil young songs havent heard it in so long

  • Let's give props to the guy who wrote it - Ian Tyson, who wrote so many other great and legendary songs

  • Absolutely. I used to look forward to "The Ian and Sylvia Show" every Tuesday (early '70's). He dropped off the radar after that show went off the air (occasionally resurfacing), but running a working ranch will do that to you.

  • Is that Emmy Lou seated on Neil's left? The harmonies on the original are a highlight (with Nicollette Larson?) but barely audible on this video.

  • No, Emmy Lou has more delicate facial features. And I bet they would give her more camera time too.

  • that might be Neil's wife Peggy, she is also a singer herself ,possibly joined him on stage

  • @ZWILD1 I'm pretty certain that is Peggi Young. Neil's wife.

  • i heard this on radio 2 the other day and thought i must look for it on here. this video is fantastic. i'm not sure if my eyes are playing tricks but i'm sure i spotted the fantastic willie nelson!

  • Neil Young is someone I wish would live forever.

  • he will.

  • to all who wanted to cover this song, i have watched some of them finished videos and they played it on key of "G" when as you can see clearly he is playing the song on key of "C"

  • it's in key of C, because there is F in Dm.

  • i agree bro....

  • Wish I was there, still have not seen Willie, or Neil, and I am bummed- Today is my 45th birthday, so I shall listen to Neil all day..... ANGEL

  • You are going to see Neil before you pass! Get ahold of them tickets when he comes around!

  • well,. you should go to next concert and don't think about anything.

  • next time he playing anywhere near you go and see neil, had the pleasure of him in dublin 2 years on the trot ,one outdoor and one in a new indoor arena ,both gigs will stay with me forever, happy birthday by the way

  • when and where is farm aid

  • Wow, he has aged in time. Just like a fine wine. This song is so sweet!

The song I heard also done by Tony Rice who is blue grass.

No matter how you play this song it is beautiful.

    Shelli

  • I've heard of Canada somewhere in school. Just kidding. I know where it is on a map. It's right next to Germany.

  • Hey that's really good!! Now just do the rest of us a favour and hang yourself and call it quits.

  • Okay, Slappy. Leave the fact that I'm well hung out of the conversation. Do you frown at satire?

  • go ahead and tell me what satire is i'm not sure what you did was satire.

  • Grab a dictionary, douche.

  • Learn how to spell, Dipshit!

  • Great job with the grammar. I take it you took the small bus to school. What a freakin' idiot! Get back to English class, asshole!

  • enjoy wayl they still alive

  • Old man, look at my life....

  • hey neil and willie

    great,

    what year is that martin

    art

  • Had not heard this in many years, then it caught me today at a time in my life when things are coming to an end in many ways. Thank you, Neil, for helping me cope with moving on. By the way, the original Harvest (not Harvest Moon) is also an amazing song.

  • Neil Young rocks... love this song. He has such an amazing catalogue of music it truly is hard picking out favourite songs. Viva Canada!!!! We love you, Neil!!!

  • Don't forget it was another Canadian Ian Tyson who wrote and first recorded this song .

  • man his voice is sounding real good , he rocked it up hear in new zealand a couple of months ago, really brought the house down

    rocknroll my bro

  • He lives in the US Jogan. I'm from the UK, I now live in Canada and couldn't give a toss for the UK; it isn't the country that I was brought up in.

  • he has a home in the united states, but he was born and raised in canada

  • I am honoured to have named my boy after Neil and I am truly blessed that Neil Makes CANADA PROUD !!!!! Thank You Neil for remembering where you come from...... :)))

  • Wow, it's amazing where on YouTube, you can watch your favorite performer age right before your eyes. I still love Neil Young as a young man and probably more now as an older performer.

  • This song has a lot of sentimental meaning to me. I dated a guy who was a sailor, and this was one that meant a lot to us when he was away. Not to mention, it's beautifully performed.

    Thanks for this.

  • This song means a real lot to me, as my old Dad always said he didn't didn't like anything "modern" "rock" "pop" or anything after about 1950. Just occasionally he would let his real feelings show through and when I played "Comes a Time" and this track in particular, he would say "Who Sings That?" "Thats Good". But when I put on "Tonights the Night" he couldn't work the whole thing out.The generation gap was wide.

My Dad died in 1987 but this great song brings him back to me.

  • My dad died in 89. He loved This Old House off of American Dream.

  • Why? - To see the eagle glide ascending above an ancient river bending, through the timeless gorge of changes, where sleepless awaits.

  • Good answer.

  • That is a really good answer and one of my all time favorites but he never seems to play it.

Shame, lots of good words "the aimless blade of science cuts down the pearly gates" (or similar).

  • why the hell would you go to the states?

  • That magnificent country to our (US) North is underrespected -- even recognized -- does almost everything better than the US. I await your "Love it or leave it" response.

If you are so stupid you can't see all Canadians have health insurance and that poor provinces are helped by the rich ones, well go on. Continuing being an ignorant American.

  • He does a good version!

But--I still like Bobby Bare´s version more!

  • No! No! No!

Neil Young wrote many, many songs but not this one. Not this song. This is written by folk legend Ian Tyson married to folk legend Sylvie Tyson ...

  • I guess nobody noticed, including Neil and the band, that he screwed up the lyrics, singing the second half of the second verse in both the first and second verses. To say nothing of the off-key singing. Ian Tyson has dibs on the song. No question.

  • He wrote the song --he can sing it anyway he wants.

  • neil young didnt write this song Ian Tyson did.

  • Tyson wrote it in 1961. It's one of Neil Young's favourite songs of all time; he spend many a nickel playing it on jukeboxes and it appears on his 1978 album, "Comes a Time" and he has performed it many times in concert. He gets the verses mixed up, but he seems really into it, as ever. He TOTALLY mixes up the verses for "Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues" on the Dylan 30th Anniversary concert, though! But his performance is amazing.

  • Must be the drugs.

  • I love Neil but I think I like Bobby Bare's version of this better, especially live.

  • He is actually Canadian, and not Native. Got his start in Winnipeg, Canada - home of the Guess Who, Bachman Turner Overdrive, and many others!!

  • successful american-indian musician.

  • i love all your music neil...

  • Neil young is the god of music :)

  • neil young is myhero

  • i always start to cry whenever i hear all the songs of mr. neil young...i miss my father he's working abroad and he likes Mr.neil young very much.........

  • Keep your chin up friend :)

  • Neil's music has sustained us all through some tough times. I know he's helped me out

  • cant wait to see him in dublin superb

  • So cooool

  • This guy...

    This guy!?!?

"This guy" is Neil Young. I'll just leave it at that.

Well I can't just leave it at that after all.

Inimitable is a perfect word to describe Neil.

One could write volumes and volumes about Mr. Young and that would barely scratch the surface of this Jewel of a man and artist.

  • Good job by Neil, done in his inimitable clear, distinctive voice.

I believe this was the first song Ian Tyson ever wrote---pretty hard to top that.

  • Great Song! Great Version!

I'm with SarahhAndAlicee - Enjoy them all while you can.

  • well said

  • Who really cares, but thank God for both Neil and Dylan. To be fair i don't think many artist have consistently kicked arse for 40 years as Neil has done. Of all the old boys out there the only ones who don't live in the past are Neil and Tom Waits. But then again Bobby Dylan wrote some of the greatest songs of all time. Dont argue listen to them both

  • Add another canadian to the list Leonard Cohen

  • Ian Tyson sings this best.

  • ..neil is my homeboy..i love him to the max..gives me chills when i listen...

  • i cant choose who is the best singer of this song. either brother fours or neil young because they are so good

  • it's OK to have a preferrence about a "performing" artist. We all have our favorites. But you demonstrate ignorance on the subject of general musical artistry by totally, TOTALLY missing the boat on Dylan

  • You are damn right. No one can be compared to Neil except Bob Dylan ..

  • neil is in the same category as dylan..... no comparison to their greatness

  • the mans a god, period.

  • No one can play this song better except Ian Tyson, great cover version from Neil forever.

  • I can't help but shed a few tears. Makes me think of loved ones departed and some still here. I'm a musician. I'm also sentimental. Right now there's someone I love that I'm thinking of. Neil Young can kick ass and get dirty with the best of them like in "Powderfinger". He can also do some of the most beautiful stuff you ever heard like "Harvest Moon". Hell of a man

  • It's nice to read in comments on this song and some others I've seen that I'm not the only one in the world that gets sentimental over performances like this and who thinks that Neil Young and Bob Dylan are simply beyond compare.

  • Amazing song! Written by the great Ian Tyson.

"Comes A Time" is my all time favourite Shakey album! Neil was born to sing this song!

  • This song makes me just want to hug the person nearest to me...not to mention Neil

  • Comes A Time is too often overlooked when talking about Neil's best albums. I'd say it's as good as anything he ever released.

  • I loved this song the first time I heard it. Neil still sounds great!!!
