I've got a '95 XJR and it's bloody brilliant. I drove one of the XJRs he's testing above when they were new and it was a lot better than my old X300 one.
The XJR isn't an M5 - because it doesn't have to be. It'll keep up with one and be a lot comfier whilst doing so.
@FastCarPete I've got an x-type. Handles completely different than the toyotas and hondas i've owned. It is firm, subtle, taut but not bone-jarringly annoying like hondas and is comfortable for long distance cruises like the toyota.
How they managed to build a suspension that behaves in such a manner.... I was befuddled.
My next car? the 400 hp XJR. I dont like the new XJ but love the Bertone design based on the classic look.
I don't get it. All you people going on about how he's an idiot and so on. He's expecting a sporty drive because it's a sports model. The fact that certain other brands manage that with a good normal ride quality too is why he says there are better options. I'll wager that most of you lot shouting him down haven't even tried them next to the opposition yet you're all rubbishing his opinion like you're the next gods of road testing. It's an honest review which I can vouch for having tried them.
Wow, this guy is reviewing an XJ with no idea what the car represents. Sounds like he wants a Corvette with four doors. I bought an 08 VP because it is the last true XJ.....the 2011 is an Aston Marton copy.
the guy is a tool, I have a 15 year old XJ6 (I'm a 35 year old Project Manager). This guy has no class, he wouldn't know a classic car if it came up to him, kicked him in the nuts and said "I'm a classic car". Nob head.

@tommyb2b1 it,s sad you had a bad experience with a jag, but, there was obviously issues with it prior to you buying it, any car can crap out if the owner mistreats it, it,s mechanical after all, you just bought a lemon, better luck for future buys,--- a sloth in the twisties ? as i said, buy a sports car, people don't buy luxury autos to race

Need some advice. Im thinking of buying a Jaguar XJR, 2005 MODEL AND with 60000km, it will cost me around 18000£ but it has 5 years , please need some advice. THANKS
Plastic engine tensioners? Always break and drop the timing chain, very expensive repair and you need a good machine shop to straighten the eight valves! terriblely made ie;98-2001 this year is no better?
Ask this "critic" (isn't everyone a pro) in another 10-15 years to re-review the car and he will be jizzing in his pants with glee. He would get girls in the Jag that would stick around and in the Benz's, they take his credit card and flee.
I own a 1987 Jaguar Xj6 Sovereign. The steering wheel just shakes a bit its a jag thing. its not really shaking its more you can feel the engine through the steering wheel. There AMAZING cars and i love them (:
...and the S-Type has been discontinued. Both the S-Type and X-Type Jaguars were never really Jags. They were an attempt to make money by getting in on the entry level luxury market. The XJ and XK series are the real thing and it takes more than an engine to make a car special and iconic.

might I as what a mondeo is??? lol. Never heard of it. Must be some weird small ass tiny car that is sent over to europe cause their roads are to small for a real vehicle like a Navigator, Yukon denali, etc.
The Ford Mondeo is a product of Euro-Ford and isnt sold in America, and it is a 4 door saloon. Its outsold the BMW 3-series for many years, although I think the BMW has finally passed it in sales numbers. But Euro-Ford churns out better cars than Ford in America because we use better quality materials and we pay higher prices.
The host is so mean, this car is awesome!!! I own a 2003 S-type r and the car is fantastic I race race Bimmers and Mercs all the . I win most of the time
Even at a young age, I really adore the classic interior of this car so why would he say it is more likely for old people. I'd prefer to drive this than any other "more for the younger buyers" german cars and I'd be unique. Dont even say this is ugly. If you say this car is ugly than I'm sure you'd also say the new BMW 7 series is good looking. I dont hate german cars In fact I like those cars but I think there is something special about the XJ that attracts me more than most modern cars.
u like jag but do not insult those who prefer benz or bmw. it is very naive and biased of u. i love jaguars but i just have to say that this car looks Sooooo.......ooo inferior to the s-class and the 7-series.
this dimwitted idiot doesn't know what he's talking about. I'd rather have a proper Jaguar than a Beamer or a Merc. It has passion and substance. It's much more exclusive than any of it's competetors on th road too. You see Beamers and Mercs everywhere thesedays!
i agree... that jaguar is so beatiful... everyone these days think of buying mercs or bms, but i would have the jag... it's also cheaper then it's rivals
I agree, but he is right inasmuch as the 2003 X350 had it right by sticking to what they know best, then pulled a boyracer trick out of the bag with the face lift. Aside from the questionable glued on spoilers, I don't fancy what those tyres would do to the ride quality, which, of course, is what Jaguar is all about - going around corners a lot faster than it feels. On those tyres one would definitely know how fast one was going.
@minibus1351 The "dimwitted idiot" is a profession racing car driver Jason Plato, also a Touring Car champion in 2001. I'd take his opinion seriously. Back then I would've bought a E class over the Jag but the new XF is definitely a class leader.
@minibus1351 Amen to that. I've owned four Jags - I still have two of them (JaguarSport XJR-S V12, and an X300 XJ6); I've driven XKR, XJR; BMW 740, 850, 528, Merc C180, 220................none of them come near an XJR.
At under 90K.. to get a BMW or Benz anywhere near all the options and comfort you get with the Jaguar STOCK.. you'll spend over 100K. It's lighter than a lot of its competitors 4K lbs vs 4500-5000lbs. More HP/TQ than an S550 and LS460. And the 50hp for the Audi is more or less neutralized by an extra 800lbs.
If performance bothers you so much, take that extra 20+ grand and buy bolt ons and upgrades from Arden and their ilk.
I'm 23 and I think it's absolutely sexy and a great buy.
your leaving out the reliability factor in the 460, those are just about the only top end cars that are not grenades, as well as the gs450h and the ls600h, but h's are on a whole diffrent level.
the other thing i hate is reviewers harping on about the specifications and equipment. why are you spending half the time telling me stuff i could look up in the online brochure. i want to know what the essence of the car is about, how it fits in with it's competitors, why i should/n't buy this car, why fans love and why others would go with a merc or a bmw, it's reliability.....
i agree with you sodoffb. 5th gear are hot on gimmicks but fail in the substance department. at the end he talks about scuttle shake. is he having laugh?! scuttle shake on a bonded aluminium space-frame saloon???!!! does he even know what that term means? complete numpties.
Its a Plastic suited, slightly funked up version of the old classic.
A terrible car by any standard- if you had that much money and bought this rather than "any" other same priced car i would think you may need a little word.
haha- whats left of this car is as far away from the original as can be. That turd on the roof is just folly and the huge arches serve in holding back the sleek classic look of the original which was by all means a very nice car.
Have any of you "chaps" ever driven one of these before? Maybe your that good, you can comment without doing so?
Every time I see the gimmicks that Fifth Gear put in their reviews my stomach sinks. From Potato's attempt at looking scruffy (you can just hear the director calling out "Jason! Scratch your balls now!") to his witless acting it's all painfully laboured...
That's not as bad as the part where he says 'I'm a racing driver in my 30s...' he was a few months away from 40 when this was aired. It says it all that he drives a 911 turbo with the number plate 'P1ATO'
Dos it look like a sports car? Mad Sunday blast - its a Jag. I'd trade my BMW in, but I have just bought a Range Rover. Still in 2 years if production remains in the UK - I have no reason to doubt this mind.
Maybe the facelift wasn't so bad 'cause at least it now looks different from the previous model. But still, the American styling sucked. It made the car less elegant.
It does feel american- and this edge has taken the car away from its origins- these origins are where the car had its genuine sophistication and classic looks- this current model is far away from that.

WEll they are conservative but beautiful cars. I like the new S-Type.

There is no new S type. The S type has been replaced by the XF

Yes there is, there are 2 S Types, the current one (which I call new) and the older one which was like 1960 something :)

Well the Newer Stype last year of production is 08 and then it will be replaced by the XF

Maybe the facelift wasn't so bad 'cause at least it now looks different from the previous model. But still, the American styling sucked. It made the car less elegant.

Fair comment mate.
It does feel american- and this edge has taken the car away from its origins- these origins are where the car had its genuine sophistication and classic looks- this current model is far away from that.
