@russianman07 yes, as soon as you plug in an active hdmi cable into the insert on the right side of the machine, the screen will blank out and immediately switch over to the ps3 or xbox 360 display, its really cool, and i have seen it done on a youtube video
I would say the OLD M17x is better. I very well know you get less "free" parts with it, but you have the option to get it with a 1920x1200 Screen, where on the R3, you can maximum get 1920x1080.
I would get the old M17x very cheap, then just upgrade what I wanted afterwards.
@KnekkePower The m17x r2 also has superior build quality and screen. Plus if you have dual 5870's the r2 outperforms the r3. The r3 is a step backwards in my opinion.
@860125mwj I was in the same place when shopping around my roommate has an xps from dell less than a year old his also overheats constantly even when running something as simple as photoshop or 3ds max and i know that dell and alienware have terrible reputations but i thought i'd give them the benefit of the doubt and just try an alienware i finally got a hold of them theyre sending a tech to replace my video card but i don't think that will fix the blue screens and random restarts
fucking terrible i have one only had it 3 weeks ive had to do a full system restore twice it overheats and blue screens and dell told me it's too new so it's not in thier system so i cant send it back and i was using it for school (visual effects major)
@carrion412 I had bluescreens but my system never overheated though. The bluescreens seem to have gone away now but I still ended up selling it. I should have listened to myself when I said that dell is crappy. I'm going back to toshiba because I never had any problems with them.Leave it to dell to ruin a good laptop.Also at one point my m17x r3 actually didn't recognize the charger which should never happen. I have never had that happen on any laptop except dell. DELL IS CRAP!

@AlienTechProductions ive seen alot of videos it might burn its self if you have it on a like bed or something so it cant vent but when its on a flat surface its dsigned to vent perfectly without over heating. it has fans on the back and on the bottom i think.

@TreeHouseHacker the technology is called optimus. it means that when GRAPHICAL POWER IS NOT REQUIRED it uses less voltage and gives u 4 hours of battery. no computer in the world not even mac books can game for more an hour and a half.
Ok. M17x r3 or New dv7t quad? Im stuck....The Hdmi in is such a cool feature. But pricing wise to tune the one I wanted was 2k. The dv7 quad offers alot of the same hardware features and came out be around 1500$. The only thing the dv7t lacked was the hdmi in and the xtra usb slots o and like 5 pounds lol. u dont even need a desktop anymore, if u dont use 3 or more monitors u dont need a desktop, this laptop loaded would do just the same as a high end desktop maxed out, if u dont use 3 video cards or more u can just get this
I would honestly sell my entire setup and get this laptop but I realise I have an Asus G51JX-X5 360M 720QM which is just as good as a back up PC. If I didn't have both this and a PS3 would suffice my gaming needs.

@thesdcfa Actually the m17xR2 is better for gaming with its dual GPU configuration. The upcoming M18 will be the gaming king, but I expect its battery life to be zilch, its weight to crush a small child and its cost should ruin your credit rating for years to come.

I have the black M17, and i can say that dust becomes visible very quickly... so that might be something to consider when buying. personally I'm going for the red (coz you get that 2 tone effect).

@cbrr4321 ita already out, 1500 dollars minimum up to 4400 dollars fully specd up! (Its brillaint because this is about 4000 pounds off the the UK site, so in reality im saving 1600 pounds buying off the US site! :p thank god for fucked up economys!!

well, lets see this new guy offers Wireless 3D transfer to a 1080p full hd tv seemlessly also,it's running the brand new core i7 Sandybridge platform(with 4 core i7 options) for better upgraded performance from previous series platforms.Plus, they made the laptop much lighter with 4 hours of baterry life!Now just compare!!Of course I would buy this in a heartbeat if I had the money-who are you kidding!!

Why can't they do SLI Mode for this one or at least give it a GTX 485m with SLI. Not trying to Criticize them but they should really focus on the newer mobile gpus.

@thesdcfa Actually the m17xR2 is better for gaming with its dual GPU configuration. The upcoming M18 will be the gaming king, but I expect its battery life to be zilch, its weight to crush a small child and its cost should ruin your credit rating for years to come.

@xxxxxHavocxxxxx because Intel found a bug into all Sandy Bridge computers (not only the Alienware M17X). Shipments will begin again starting from 20th february

now the R3 have those new AMD Radeon 6970M ... i think with Crossfire (but you have to buy it yourself) it would be overpoverd to play normal games like BC 2 or Black Ops

I have the black M17, and i can say that dust becomes visible very quickly... so that might be something to consider when buying. personally I'm going for the red (coz you get that 2 tone effect).

Does anyone know if you can play a 3D compatible game (Black Ops) on your Xbox or PS3 and play in 3D using the 3D screen on the M17x R3?

@ItsThaaAzn no i'm quite sure not. In that case the Alienware notebook is only a screen, so you need that the console supports the 3D output and you need that the HDMI link is the latest release

@Notebookitalia The Xbox 360 does, and Call of Duty Black Ops is a 3D compatible game. I was asking if you could use the 120hz screen on the M17x R.3 as a 3D TV.
