  • Love 'The Graduate' pic to represent virginity.

  • Sheffield but near enough to barnsley

  • Just heard this today for 1st time. #1 on the Coverville 2011 Hall of Fame. Very impressive.

  • cute. save the clock tower too.

  • Best Kinks cover since Kirsty MacColl's version of "Days".

  • Nicely presented visuals, thanks.

  • @Onariman48 I do like the Kinks version too. This is the first version I ever heard and I'm a fan of the artist. Thanks for the comment

    Kindest Regards

    ER

  • I prefer the Kinks version.

  • I love you curly girly,,,,,,singer song writer godess

  • God save England, and Kate Rusby. ♥

  • top version from the barnsley girl

  • @mickob45 Couldn't agree with you (or almost all my comments) more. Kate Rusby is fabulous and I adore her. Not only makes me proud to be British, makes me proud to be a Yorkshire girl :)

  • This is a rare example of a cover improving on the original. For me, this is THE version, turning Ray Davies' pretty but melodically unremarkable pop (one of the original Britpop songs?) into something much more folk-ish and memorable. Kate Rusby should have been on Davies' "See my Friends" collaborations album with this.

  • @shanehnorman Sorry, but that is absolute horse-shit. It's like saying Britney Spears version of 'Satisfaction' was better than the Stones'.

  • @SizeTenBiscuit It's all a matter of taste. Sometimes the original is the best, sometimes a cover does a better job. Also Britney Spears and the Stones are very chalk and cheese. I don't think Kate Rusby's version of this is better than the Kinks but then they're very different styles. I think they're equally good for the style.

    Kindest Regards

    ER

  • @EriksRose1 What a nice reply :)

  • @shanehnorman

    You're crazy.

  • I love UK so much...I feel like I should have been born there.

  • love it :)

    Greetings from Germany

  • This is why amarican's are jelous of us... ;)

  • @20meerkat Exactly!

    Kindest Regards

    ER

  • @20meerkat Well, except the bit about Donald Duck, we can't take the "credit" for him. Not sure how he crept into the song, really.

  • I hope you know she didn't write this song.

  • @ronalddeinartz but she sang it better than the man who did and i'm a massive kinks fan

  • @mickob45 See comment below.

  • If I had not been on a bus back from the back of the beyond of the Irish midlands last night I'd never have heard this. It was played on the Irish radio graveyard shift and something about it got into me. What a lovely musical voice. Must hear more!

  • After the royal wedding yesterday and now listening to this I feel quite nostalgic for England after living abroad for 40 years !!

  • Lovely version by Kate Rusby, but let's give credit to Ray Davies, one of the greatest songwriters and social commentarians of our time. As an expat Englishman, this song and Waterloo Sunset always make me think of home. Especially after a couple of drinks..

  • What a great video for a lovely song, beautifully sung. I only caught a few episodes of Jam and Jerusalem - but it was SO like the tiny Devon village where my mum was born and raised that it was almost uncanny (right down to the characters and situations - the number of times I've spoken to ladies exactly like Dawn French's character...!). But the song stands alone in it's greatness. Kate Rusby is a REALLY gifted lady. A friend of mine has seen her live 3 times and she never disappoints.

  • @RoonJazz

The village that it was filmed in is just 10 miles away from me, in Devon, called North Tawton. It is just outside of Crediton, which is about 7 miles outside of Exeter. It is a true Devonian Village and the characters are so true to life. Jennifer lives not far away and chose the location for the filming herself and Dawn is from an area of Plymouth (again in Devon) known locally as Blue Monkey. Bring back Jam & Jerusalem!!

  • @philhodgson I know North Tawton!! My mum was born in Bovey Tracey & her family still live there & in Broadhempston (nr Ipplepen/Totnes)! I couldn't believe how true to life J&J was - a REAL understated gem of a programme - it should DEFINITELY be brought back, as it was Licence payers' money well-spent. Next time Jasper & I head on down the ol' A303 (can't afford holidays of any sort at the mo. Good ol' budget cuts & fuel prices), we'll offer to treat you to a few pints of the good stuff! x

  • i love this video it is sooooooo good and good singing!!!!

  • this song sums up britain

    I'M PROUD TO BE BRITISH!!!

  • This song was the theme of 2009's camp trip to the new forest (I might add it was kates lovely version too).

  • here, here!

  • I LOVE KATE!! got all her albums, pride of South Yorkshire!

  • @northernfag I love Kate too. She's brilliant. :oD

  • I loved this xxx

  • I think I prefer this to the original.

  • love this

i'm from scotland but please save england

    pc crazy

  • @plopplop1983 Long Live Scotland!

  • @plopplop1983 That's an amzing comment coming from Scotland. Alas UK wake up!!!

  • @plopplop1983 too late were all moving to scotland its madness down here

  • The wonderful Kate performing a wonderful song by the wonderful Kinks. How much better can it get?

  • Pretty good. Although the pool rack doesn't quite fit - it's not billiards.

  • @MyohoSound Thanks. And I know, I just can't be bothered to change it. In my defense, I made this very late at night.

    Kindest Regards

    ER

  • @MyohoSound pool is however a type of billiards

  • Great video!! Love this song..:) it makes me feel better for some reason :)

  • @surfaceofthesun100 You're very welcome :) Thanks for commenting

    Kindest Regards

    ER

  • @EriksRose1

I heard Kate Rusby and her Mother on BBC Radio 2 with French & Saunders - she was delightful. I have always loved Kate; wish I could see more of her here in the USA - really, one of the very best voices, so pure and moving. Best wishes to all for 2011.

  • I am a signed up member of both the Skyscraper Condemnation Affiliate and the Office Block Persecution Affinity.

There has been talk of merging the two organisations together but personally I just like keeping things the way they are.

  • There's no flies on that Tedman55 is there?

  • Sums it all up. Thanks for posting.

  • Absolutely another worthy cover by the beautiful Kate. My one criticism of the video is that pool is not billiards ! ;-) Good effort all the same.

  • this is a cover

  • Very nice video...... I like the pictures and its timing

you put a smile on my face even though I was worried

    thanks ^___^

  • Brilliant! Great version by young Kate, and a very well done video to boot!

    Thanks for this - appreciated!

  • GOD SAVE VIRGINITY!!!!

  • Brilliant, shows how the use of dialect in music brings the song to life.

  • Fastastic version and a canny video :-)

  • Very cleverly put-together video, thank you. Oh, and Kate does a passable job of the song too!

  • i have to say, this is better than the kinks version

  • Pfft - who is disliking this?! I ADORE this song, even more so when she sings it. =D

  • fab song from a barnsley lass, excellent

  • love the video made me smile. Kate is just amazing and I love her to bits

  • Great rendition... But Donald Douk? jeje

  • ahh love this

  • Any one know the chords are for this version?

  • fun vid........................except they were pool balls not BILLIARDS. Devil is in the detail!

  • morning sergeant

  • God Save European civilization.

  • i went to go see kate rusby tonight in concert! REALLY GOOD! seen her little baby, cuttie:)

  • I've seen her live, shes fantastic and a nice personality...really down-to-earth

  • "We are the sky scraper condemnation affiliate

We are the office block persecution affinity" beautiful makes me love England

  • I've never watched the program , I just like the song espeacialy this version, isn't that enough? Funny to think that in the '60s the Kinks got banned from touring the USA just because of thier name!

  • yay america dum dum YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYSSS!!!

  • lolol wut?

  • song love

  • just ONE more reason to scrap the license fee !

  • damn u bbc just another reason they can stick their licence fee sick of the crap like jonahane ross and his dribble strictly come dancing the list goes on and we have to pay for this!shame on you BBC.

  • what no more jam and jerusilim ow no wheres a noose... and a tree!!!

  • beautiful song like guava!!!

  • Memories of Ray Davies and the Kinks.

  • an angelic voice to a melodic masterpiece!

  • Wot? ?Wot?? No more Jam and Jerusalem? ? Who ses so?? Why???

Can we form one of those internetty group things to force them to bring it back. I love that programme, Jennifer Saunders and BBC I hope you're reading this.

  • I'll sign up! We're still getting it in Canada, but the thought of losing it fills me with dread! My very favourite show.

  • The track combines two of my passions - The Kinks and Kate Rusby - but the accompanying slide show is woefully off the mark a few times. I mean, showing a shot of pool balls when the song is about billiards (to be protected against incomers like pool, surely; and the choice of a "small shop"!).

  • I love Kate Rusby, I love the Kinks, I love Jam and Jerusalem and Love All our ways!

  • Totally brilliant cover of a Kinks classic.

    God save Kate Rusby.

  • deep breaths of British beauty and traditional song. Long live our Kate and God save the Queen x

  • I like this version-her voice and accent is class. Bit of a soft spot for the original though. God save the Kinks.

  • Can't believe there isn't going to be anymore Jam and Jerusalem!!! ='(

I look forward to it every year and now there isn't going to be another one. Sadness =(

    xx

  • Either it's this lady's plaintive vocals, (or maybe the Stella) but the nostalgic vibe of this song is 'nearly' (;() making me cry !

btw, got to love those flat Barnsley Vowels !!

  • i really like it!

    well done =]

  • Great song. Nice video!

  • Simply a well done video to a great tune. Thanks again for making & posting.

  • I prefer this version to the original by the Kinks

  • It's a bloody good cover version, sure, and far be it from me to disparage anybody's personal taste, but the original is...well, the original. Forty years on it's as fresh and as relevant (if not more so) than the day it was recorded; for a song (and an album) which was considered mired in the past even when it was released it just goes to show that maybe The Kinks were on to something after all.

  • Well bloody said.

I was a around when the Kinks brought this out, and, along with such classics as 'Victoria' was deemed a little too 'English' even then. Love this version. Kate Rusby has a beautiful voice, but Ray is........................... Ray...

  • why do we have to say one is "better" than the other, or "prefer" this to that.

The song wouldn't exist without Ray Davies. The version at the time started the song on it's life.

This is a great version too.

    Different...

  • I'm there... a Tudor tearoom on the green in an English country village, surrounded by trees and flowers.

    Is there anywhere more beautiful?

  • Not to my mind :)

    Kindest Regards

    ER

  • @MattAbel24 only one thing that I can think of is more beautiful than that... a Norfolk village surrounded by trees, green fields and above all, the broads at sunset :)

  • @Maksimfan second that. Geldeston Lockes Inn at sunset with a pint of orange wheat....what the hell am I doing in Leeds!?!?

  • @martinmedeski You know Geldeston Locks Inn? I played there a few times with my college!

  • A great version of a great song!

  • By heaven.. she's got the purest voice since Joan Baez!

  • funny lyrics! thanks

  • Ray Davies wrote many songs that reflected his observations of English life, this was nothing more than a well written piece of social commentry, a nostalgic look at a way of life that was disappearing even by the late 60s. Try listening to the whole album, fabulous!

  • Lovely Song, Lovely Voice, Thnx 4 posting,

  • I wonder if this song has anything to with the changing demigraphics of england. I could see multiculturalists getting up in arms over this. Not that I would care.

  • Demographics, maybe? ;3

  • Ahh................England, nowhere better despite everything.

  • she has such a beautiful voice!

one of my freinds said i sound like her ..... i wish ... lol...x

  • Gosh this makes me homesick. 11 years and counting.

  • thank you this song makes me so happy didnt think i would find it video is fitting 2

  • Love this and the TV show

    peace and love

    Little Milton

  • She has such as fantastic voice! I love the way the northern accent comes out when she says certain words.... I could listen to her all day!

  • This is quite possibly the best video on youtube, just fantastically clever

  • @Cally2903 Donald DOOK.

  • Cool video. Made me chuckle

  • She said Donald Duck

  • did she say 'god save dumbledore'?

  • Not sure what you heard; but was probably Vaudeville - which is like an old fashioned form of Victorian/Edwardian British theatre.

  • I saw Kate yesterday at where I work, and I see her there about once a month or so, and I have always said to myself that I would ask for her autograph, but I chickened out, aannnd, I'm leaving at the end of this month, so I don't know whether I will see her again!! :O

She's such a lovely person who ALWAYS has a smile and speaks to you! :D

  • Love Kate!!!!!

    Wonderful song

  • her voice actually just gave me goosebumps ... just wow

  • I'm sure some of that jam is french.

  • this lady has a voice to die for

  • Nice take on the song

  • Tops!

  • I didn't care for this version. It just sounds like Kate Rusby takes the material too seriously and the song loses all it's humor because of it. She's a talented singer but this song is nowhere near as charming as the original kinks version.

  • I don't know Kate Rusby's stuff at all, and I don't know the Kinks' stuff much either, but I know the original version of this song and I think this is actually slightly better, if only because a slightly silly song gains from being sung with sincerity. Also, much as I like Ray Davies, Kate Rusby is evidently a much better singer.

  • Lovely video, with one small complaint - that's not billiards, that's pool, which the Village Green Preservation Society would absolutely hate!

  • I spotted that myself.

I actually prefer this version to the Kinks, this is more lively!

  • hehehehe

  • i love this song wow

    Kate Rusby soooooooooooo cool!

    cop ya

  • Beautiful song, beautiful version x

  • i love this song, and the original kinks version, the lyrics are so good

  • I clicked on this expecting to dislike it. I'm happy to say my expectations were wrong. Why do I always expect the worst? 5 stars.

  • Beautiful but what was Kate thinking doing a duet with Ronan Keating last year !!! She has a great voice but the single was terrible . Stay on your own Kate - your fantastic

  • This was the first Kate song I heard, so well sung and funny.Seeing her next month! Am a fan for life now, she so often expressesemotion I can't put into words for myself.

  • brilliant, thanx so much for posting ! : ) xx

  • I am now in love with you for this video

  • I absolutely love the way her yorkshire accent comes through in this song. A lovely sweet song as english as you can get.
