thank you grandmother , please be strong .... thank you grandfather for teaching me the way of our people an thank you father for life and loving my mother
mother ...thank you for life an thank you for understanding when i needed to be free
It would appear to me that the Cherokee phrase ( Wash Your Spirit Clean ) is a lot like what Jesus taught, when he said ( " you MUST be born again of he spirit" ) to me both would mean the same thing
@RettWilliams59 - Yes that is all my mother knew ( Black Dutch ) , she kept saying the Bowles ( her ancestors ) were Black Dutch and one day I asked her " mother does that mean my ancestors were black folks who came here from holland? " she never had an answer, it took me a lot of research to ever find the truth.
OK. Peopel clearly do not listen to break down the syllabary which is so slow how can you not recognize the dialect, and words?
Hi-Nv-Ga-La-(Ja)-Da-Nv-To is the first part.
JA beign the dialect variant between the two. But many look at the sylabary wrong and don't speak each part right TSA is cha in soem dialects its varies to sha.
When yo ueven say siyo for hello its acually not SEE YO but rather soudns mroe liek shiO ran together almost a sharp SHO with slight hearrign of the E (see yo)
Wow, whoever is saying Rita is not Cherokee is absurd. Yes, they are speaking cherokee. Sometimes people on youtube are a little crazy and get carried away.
@lilwing80 - If you look on you tube you will fond more song videos by her #- 1 - Cherokee Morning Song and #-2- Cherokee Amazing grace. So very beautiful.
Thanks for your words clear... Maybe I cant not speak Cherokee, I have only the music and the title copy.....

There are two main dialects of Cherokee spoken by modern speakers. The Giduwa dialect (Eastern Band) and the Otali Dialect (also called the Overhill dialect) spoken in Oklahoma. The Otali dialect has drifted significantly from Sequoyah's syllabary in the past 150 years, and many contracted and borrowed words have been adopted into the language. These noun and verb roots in Cherokee, however, can still be mapped to Sequoyah's syllabary.
I can't address whether this song has any Cherokee in it, but I have found out this... Rita Coolidge (and consequently her sister who's in Walelea with her) is recognized by The Cherokee Nation.
@6Nations4life - it is people like you who would say I am not Cherokee either, even though I am a direct desendant of Chief John Bowles. In fact my Great Grandmothers name was Bowles, and YES she was born in Montague CO. TX. - just stop it already.
This music is a fraud. Rita Coolidge and her sisters are not Cherokees. And what is even worse, the words claimed to be Cherokee in this piece are just made up gibberish. People ask, "What is the harm in people falsely claiming Cherokee heritage?" This is it folks! They are bastardizing my tribe's culture and language.
Rita Coolidge and her sisters all claim to be Cherokee.
I believe the quote from their website says:
"Rita’s father, Dick Coolidge, was a Cherokee preacher in the Baptist Church, and her mother, Charlotte Stewart, was Cherokee and Scotch. The locals said, ‘Charlotte’s married a gypsy.’ In the hills of Tennessee, we weren’t the minority; we were the only Indian people in town."
But you're saying they are NOT speaking Tsalagi Gawonihisdi.
@sambsonwayfinder The Cherokee people are dealing with a phenomenon unknown to any other people in the history of man. We are being displaced by the very people who stole our lands, destroyed our way of life, murdered our ancestors and drove us west on the Trail of Tears. The words in that song are NOT Cherokee. Rita Coolidge is NOT a Cherokee. I cannot say it any plainer than that.
Thank you. I am aware of this phenomenon and am trying to root out the truth. I hope you don't mind, but I've taken it upon myself to contact Walela personally and direct them to this very conversation. I think it important to see what their response to being told that they are not speaking Cherokee and have no native blood in their veins will be. I have also contacted the Cherokee Phoenix Newspaper. Stick with your principles and continue to strive for truth in this situation.
@cherokee7star Yes. The same with my ancesotrs. my mother kept saying we are - BLACK DUTCH - It took a very long time for me to find out EXACTLY what that way. Mother didn't even know.

THe proper wordign is nto english reference.
To me to wash a sprit clean or the word for word would be closer to
adiwasti nihi's adanádo (or inner soul form galakuodi adanado) {u}danagalada
yet don't take her version word for word becuase it isnt actually what it is sayign at all. More to do with rendering ones soul free.

@cherokee7star
I can think of at least 2 possibilities if they are indeed NOT singing in Cherokee:
1) they are singing in another native tongue besides Cherokee
2) the German person who posted this video (note the translation under "Show More") mistakenly assumed it was.
sambsonwayfinder 1 year ago
@sambsonwayfinder They are singing in Cherokee. It is also quoted in the liner notes of the CD in Cherokee.

THIS IS NOT CHEROKEE LANGUAGE.
STOP RIPPING OFF NATIVE CULTURE AND LANGUAGE FOR YOU TO PROSPER AND MAKE MONEY WHILE OUR PEOPLE SUFFER AND DIE.
WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS AIDING THE CULTURAL GENOCIDE AGAINST OUR NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE.

@sambsonwayfinder I shall look forward to it. But I can tell you what she will say.
1. Her ancestors hid out in the mountains.
2. Her ancestors stood strong in the homeland , my ancestors ran away.
3. I'm a racist, identity police, blood police etc.
4. I'm trying to keep all the goodies for myself.
5. Her ancestors refused to get on the roll because they were ashamed or refused to get on the roll because they didn't want handouts.
6. Ad naseum...
