Sabbath brought the heaviness with dark themes, essentially giving birth to metal (not to put down Led Zep, Deep Purple, etc.) Then you have Maiden who gave it the time changes and furthered the imagery. But it was Priest who really helped redefine the sound. Not to insult guys like Death, Venom, Megadeth, Pantera, Helloween, etc. But the three really form crucial cornerstones of metal.

What makes them the best is that they evolve and experiment with their sound.
