Mike Portnoy has magic hands..he gets that sweet sound out of the drums.Tone is in your hands.That is what separates the men from the boys in drumming,that and time and i believe Jazz co ordination is in there as well.In other words playing from your backside first...how the hell do you fly a helicopter without FEELING the aircraft from your ass if you know what i mean..anyway best wishes to you all!

Well, we've learned that Portnoy obviously doesn't listen to other drummers while trying to play in unison. it's why I've never liked this guy. His talent is substantial, but he seems to be in the game for himself and the rest of the world should revolve around him. For a guy who counts Phil Collins an an influence, maybe he ought to review him and Chester Thompson doing their duets just to get an idea of how two drummers/percussionists playing in unson should sound. It isn't this mess!

@stevedrums Actually I would say this was supposed to be his lead anyway. Terry does lots of collaborations with drummers on here and they all do their own thing to and he follows, its just to add a dynamic level.

@FakeMessiah94 If you are playing together, then it's not about a "lead". It's about complimenting the other player, trading 4's or 8's etc.... Portnoy doesn't do any of that here. he's not listening to Bozzio, he's being Portnoy. To my ears, it's being selfish. you may disagree and that's fine. It's just about preferences and taste. In this case, Portnoy shows no taste or consideration.

I myself am not the biggest Dream Theater fan just because prog is a genre I am really into but, from his various clinics of paying respect to the drummers he grew up with to the odd-time signature playing that really influenced an entire genre, you have to respect the dedication and respect the man has for the instrument. I would go as far to say that he has been a bigger influence than Bozzio. I still don't know why he must be involved in every drum channel jam...bothers me

Someone gets the job to satisfy young people by stimulating their predictable "needs". Portnoy know how to do this. Bozzio plays hes drums like a painter would paint a picture or a poet would write a poem. Most Portnoy fans wold probably just laugh when i say this.

Portnoy demonstrates techniques. Bozzio discover art. Thats the difference between them.

Neil Peart didn't switch to DW until 'Test For Echo' in 1996, which was well over 20 years into his career. Prior to that he played Slingerland ('Rush' through 'Hemispheres'), Tama ('Permanent Waves' through 'Power Windows') and Ludwig ('Hold Your Fire' through 'Counterparts'). Prior to his days with Rush, he played Rogers drums.

He hasn't "almost always" been a DW endorser by any stretch.

@metaldrummer47 Everything Mike played is basic. Just a straightforward time signature. Pridgen does a lot of tricky odd-time signatures and rudaments and what not. That's not to say Mike is a bad drummer...they just both have different styles.
