  • the sound is very very nice. how do you do ?

  • a oder d key?

  • Wonderful. I imagine it takes so much skill to coordinate the pumping and the playing.

  • @godzilloid

It takes skill, but it is the kind of skill that can be acquired through dedication and daily practice. It doesn't happen overnight! Mike is blessed with an ear for music and good hands, but he worked hard to develop his abilities.

  • Any idea where i could download the sheet music for there tunes?

  • I feel proud of the pipes I play! Any idea what that first tune was?

  • @FlyingPiper13

    Hi. Tunes are:

    1. Sunset On The Somme. (G.S. MacLennan)

    2. The Fiddler. (Donald MacLeod)

    3. Beyonce's Welcome To Leith. (M.Katz)

    Cheers!

  • Great stuff!!!

Does anyone know the name of these tunes. Especially the first one.

    Please respond if you know.

  • @ParrotFinger

    Tunes above. Cheers!

  • I remember Mike Katz at the end of the 80s, when he came with the Pipe Band in Douarnenez (Finistère, Brittany); we've spent the evening (and a part of the night) playing (and drinking !) in a bar down my home. It was great ! ! !

  • Rasputin on the small pipes.

  • very good :) well done

  • What is the name of the second tune?

  • What key is it on? Isn't it D.

  • I know those are small pipes but what brand. I want to purchase a set of small pipes and love the sound of these. What are they? PLEASE RESPOND

  • @bituco94 From what I can tell, they look like Ian Kinnear smallpipes in C.

  • @bituco94 I do as well. The sound that these pipes are generating is absolutely beautiful.

  • Thanks

  • hey jude!!!!!

  • Great playing and recording the instrument.

  • what key is this in

  • felt it through me heart loved it

  • Hi Robin...I was trying to find sheet music for beyonces welcome to leith but cant seem to buy it anywhere....where can I get it?.... Top playing Mike by the way 5 stars

  • Beautiful...

  • It isn't a Uillean Pipes?

  • @Koyuki91 no they are Scottish small pipes that Mike plays here. Also blown by bellows but a lot less 'plumbing' than Uillean pipes. You can see more of Mike playing both these small pipes and the Highland pipe

search youtube for 'Mike Katz Scottish bagpipes' and also'Battlefield Band' and you should find a number of videos which you find interesting

  • @USEROBINMORTON Thanks you. But in what are the difference between a bellow scottisch smallpipes and a Uillean Pipes?

  • best battlefield band piper for me

  • And i thought those were Irish pipes. Sounds awesome!!

  • @wyomikey65 no the northumbrian and scottish smallpipes are from the same family and trad. Although 150 years ago some makers in Northumberland/Tyneside put keys on the smallpipes to extend the range.

The Irsh pipes has a very interesting history as well, developed from the pastoral pipes played all over the British Isles and then developed into the Union pipes by makers in Ireland (Kenna), Scotland (Robrtson) and Tyneside. Its pedigree and evolution are not just limited to Ireland.

  • @seonidh

Your Tyneside union pipemaker was a fellow named Robert Reid.

For the record, though, the vast majority of union uilleann pipers were Irish born or of Irish descent. Many early pipers were members of the Anglo-Irish aristocracy, or professional musicians who were patronized by the same aristocracy. Once the aristocrats fecked off to London after the Act of Union though Irish pipers had to fend for themselves, and that's how the instrument got ingrained in Irish trad music.

  • Das ist wunderbar. Man kriegt gleichzeitig eine Gänsehaut und fühlt sich total froh und glücklich.

  • Anyone know the name of the Reel?

  • Anyone know what tunes he's playing?

  • thats how you do it!!! :D

    you are sooo awesome!!

  • the thing that makes a great piper is an absolute dedication to the instrument.. it's like Kung Fu mastery, it takes all you have

  • Anyone who enjoyed this video may be intererested to know that Mike Katz will be teaching at the piping tutorial workshops at Battlefield Band's Music Tryst Festival, which is being held at Newbattle Abbey, near Edinburgh, from 17th-19th September 2010. You can find out more about the festival and the workshops at

the festival website: music tryst dot com

  • So disappointed this wasn't on Mikes album - superb though it is! Does anyone know if these are a set of Kinnear s'pipes?

  • @TenkoJapSniper

Yes, Ian Kinnear C set in polypenco, I think.

  • Nobody plays like the pipes Mr. Mike Katz - when I see him live, he makes me cry every time

  • god, imagine running into battle in a bayonet charge while before you charges large kilted men armed to the teeth, id hate to be it that situation.

  • Hearing this guy play is so damn interesting, Liquid Tension Experiment should recruit him for one or two projects.

  • Ich bekomme jedesmal eine Gänsehaut.

  • Shalom & SAOR ALBA

  • These aren't smallpipes.

  • what are smallpipes then? Borderpipes perhaps or closed chantered cousins like the northumbrian trad?

  • Someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the Great Highland Bagpipes the same with the Great Irish Warpipes? They're both mouth-blown and I think I've read somewhere that they were introduced to Scotland through Irish immigration. They actually look the same and they're both mouth-blown.

  • Actually no specimens of late medieval pipes survive from scotland or ireland so its not proven. In fact its noted that both tones clashed at the battle of the boyne and that the standard modern GHB was invented by makers like Hugh Robertson in the mid 1760s.

As for the gaelic introduction hypothesis it was invented by a historian called Gratton Flood and has no modern historical bases. In fact the pipes are only recorded in both scotland and ireland from the 14th century onwards.

  • @KyussWhitewater

The Irish War Pipe was a modern (80-90 Years ago) Invention by bagpipe makers Henry Starck of London - They Patented the keyed chanter found on that. It was brought in and used in pipe bands in the Irish regiments of the british Army. The great Highland bagpipe in its present form came into being in the mid 1700's prior to that they only had two drones. MacIntosh's Lament is the oldest known piece of Ceol Mor frm 14th Century - 2 Drone Highland pipes were fully developed then

  • Can anyone tell me the difference between a scottish pipe and an irish one i have a pipe player at my church who said the were different i just dont remember in what way?

  • Scottish pipes such as the Great Highland bagpipe are mouth-blown and the music is written nominally in the key of A though the pipes are in Bb. Scottish smallpipes, as in the video, are bellows-blown and are in key of A or D, though they can be in C as in this video.

The Irish bagpipe is usually in key of D though there are sets in C. They are always bellows blown. They have three drones, as with Scottish pipes, bu also may have three additional pipes called regulators for playing chords.

  • Scottish pipes such as the Highland Bagpipe are in the key of Bb and are mouthblown. These are ones seen in parades played by pipe and drum bands.

Smallpipes, as in the video, may be in keys of A, Bb, C or D. The one in the video is in key of C. Most Scottish smallpipes are bellows-blown. Highland pipes and smallpipes have three drones.

The Irish pipes are bellows-blown and have three drones. They may also have three additional pipes called regulators for playing chord accompanyment.

  • Everything cornemusa said is true but...

The biggest difference is in the inside bore of the instruments and how the reeds are made. In the smallpipes the bore is perfectly cylindrical or nearly so and very small. It is the quietest of the three.

The highland and Irish pipes bores are both conical but the Irish bore is much more complex and very close to that of an oboe The Highland bore is simpler and much broader and of course much, much louder.

  • the Irish bore is much more complex and very close to that of an oboe

@rav yeah the uilleann pipes have more in common with the oboe because it is a modern form of the pastoral pipes that were based on the shwam. Wiki the pastoral pipes for a history.

  • Pipes are made by Ian Kinnear in key of C

  • Does anyone know what make of pipes he uses, they sound fantastic, Key of C?

  • I had the pleasure of playing on stage with the Band last week and Mike grabbed my Pipe in the Pub and my pipe was played like never before!! nice people great band and Mike is a genius on the pipes!!

  • Does anyone have notation for any of the tunes? Would love to get my hands on the dots for the first one in particular.

  • Good playing & good tunes. I've just done a bit of research and they are:

    1. Sunset On The Somme. (G.S. MacLennan)

    2. The Fiddler. (Donald MacLeod)

    3. Beyonce's Welcome To Leith. (M.Katz)

    Cheers.

  • bigbaw...are you having us on about the name of the third tune? If no, that's hilarious!

In any event, this is brilliant music to say the least.

  • WoW !

  • They (the band) were in town last night Nov 4...another outstanding concert.

  • For twenty years now I've seen this man 'become' the music he plays. Not an ounce of the magic has gone; it has matured.

  • Truly stunning. What a player . Ian Kinnear made these pipes pipes I believe.

  • Hypnotizing......absolutely amazing!

  • Does anyone know the names of the tunes?

  • These pipes have such a brilliant tonality - stronger than Northumbrian. Mike is a top player and would be welcome to join our band any time
