How about this? Just wear whatever you fucking want to wear. Don't let anybody else tell you otherwise. That to me, is not being true to yourself. That's like being mainstream, only it's darker. Also, every Goth is different within the spectrum of typical Gothic fashion. For example, every Goth girl doesn't wear a corset: some like them, some don't. You mix and match, and make your own personal style within the broader style.
This is to all the people who are confused about the whole "being an individual in a group" thing. I know it seems contradictory, but the fact is, it's impossible for humans to not conform to something. It's basic psychology: people need to feel they are unique, yet they need to feel they belong somewhere. The difference with Goths is they choose what lifestyle they will conform too, rather than just following the majority. It makes sense in our minds, it just doesn't always come out right! :D

This is coming dangerously close to being mainstream with prices that are definitely high fashion. Many real 'goths', for want of a better word to describe us, find these mass produced fashions totally our of reach. Goth has fallen into the evil clutches of global capitalism and the cynical 'quick buck' economy. There is something very wrong about Asian child labour sweatshops churning out gothic fashions and accessories.

I think you should shop wherever you want, be it Hot Topic or Vampire Freaks. The goal is finding the clothing you like, where you get it doesn't really matter in the end.
