The first two people are Benton Mackaye, who envisioned the trail, Myron Avery was the Lawyer who mostly built the trail.
The WWII vet that was the first to walk the trail was Earl Schaffer. I believe he did it two maybe three times, the most recently about ten years ago, I think he may have been pushing eighty.
For me, the very worst part of the AT are the people. They all get in your face and buisness. It will never occur to them you might be there to be ALONE. You will get no privacy on the AT.
