Still today after all the years that have passed by since first airing this show still can be seen on tv.......just goes to show that the old shows can't be beat......today all they have is filth and perversion.....Thank God for re-runs..........Give me Andy Griffith, I Dream of Jeanie, Petty Coat Junction any day over todays crap.
@XxUltrAMegAxX Very true. What is truly reveling is the fact that some small independent TV stations in smaller markets still air re-runs of this show during prime time , and the show still beats the major networks best efforts.
That was very beautiful. Note how scared she looked. The Dillards sang this song on one of their videos. I remember it fondly. It was a good video I also sold it on ebay for $71. Such auctions are too rare. I don't sell the oddball stuff that gets on the news.
Wow, loved whenever the Darlings were featured, and this was my favorite performance on the show. Love the Dillard's version, but for some reason (probably due to Andy's expression during the song) I prefer this clip with Charlene singing.
So i sat at tha computer last night and smoked a bowl. I happened across this song and it blew my mind. I love rap never been into this old stuff. But this song truly spoke to me. Its now my favorite song. Fell asleep to it last nite and woke up first thing this morning and turned it on.
50 years this shows has been on tv. And a great show that makes us fans forget our troubles and "wish" we could be in Mayberry. Thanks so much for posting.
Growing up, I would have never admitted to liking any "hick" bluegrass. But I remember the beauty of this song standing out watching this performance on TV. Since the Dillards' version didn't include "Charlene" singing, I searched for other artists. I fell in love with Sugarcane Jane's & downloaded the track from Amazon for .99. Their slower tempo appeals to me even more. Now, that one is absolutely one of my all-time favorite songs.
@ADMnTNB Shows such as this are too simple for the remarkable, 'sophisticated' thinking of the day. There are no gratuitous vomit scenes, and it is politically incorrect. It doesn't raise the conscientiousness of people with issues such as, thinking green (although there an episode which Barney arrests a bank robber for littering.) being angry over big companies etc. We are just too smart these days! *
* All sarcarsm is intended for mature audiences. Parents: guard children against truth!
@NousChristou "Life was so much better when it was racist!" Get bent. America, love it or leave it. I suggest you leave it. The rest of us would be so much better off. Your kind of thinking is killing us and making us lose our grip on being a world superpower. Tool.
The group doing this part-time gig is the most excellent Dillards. My favorite CDs I own from them are "The Darling Boys" and "There is a Time" from which this comes. Tons of great songs.
14 dislikes!!!!? This song brings back purity and the way music is meant to be. Love it! Anyone who dislikes this needs to have at least one holly jolly christmas and not be so pissed off!
My dad passed a few years ago and this song, and particularly "The Darlings" rendition of it, remind me of him and all the times he and I watched The Andy Griffith Show together. Episodes with The Darlings were his favorites. Thanks for the post.
Maggie PetersonFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Maggie Peterson Mancuso (born 10 January 1941 in Greeley, Colorado) is an American television actress. She is best known for playing Charlene Darling on The Andy Griffith Show. She also played innocent Rose Ellen in the 1969 film The Love God?, starring next to Don Knotts. She also played in the The Andy Griffith Show episode "A Girl for Goober" (1968) as the character Doris. The Darlings received a star on the Missouri Walk of Fame in 2008.
No matter how many times I've heard this songs, it brings be back to a time forever gone but only captive in this song...It's a song that reaches within ones soul with a haunting sentiment....
A soft tune which evolks some warm and wonderful memories of summer days and nights with great friends and neighbors in my Mayberry-like hometown. If all communities were like Mayberry . . .well, you know. Peace To ALL.
As a child, this segment made of laugh. Watching the deadpan faces of the Darlings/Dillards and seeing Mr. Darling wiping his eyes was hilarious. Today as an adult, and listening to the lyrics and Maggie Peterson sing, it is I that finds myself wiping a tear or two from MY eyes. BEAUTIFUL JOB!
it just don't get much better, love the old shows, wish some new tv shows would appear like this, with a lil' class, all us older irish ridgerunners ain't dead yet
This show just found the simplest excuses to insert beauty. It's amazing. It never seemed self conscious or contrived. There are about 10 classic moments in episodes of this show that I think are truly educational, beautiful, and positive representations of 20th century culture for future generations. About 5 of them are musical. The deadpan or goofy humor perfectly complements the scene, even though the song itself, literally sends chills up my spine.
Both my Grandmother & my Husband watch Andy Griffith on a seemingly daily basis, so I'm very familiar with the show. But, when I heard this song for the first time I just couldn't get it out of my head! Its haunting and beautiful and I wish I could buy it on itunes. <3
Thank you for your post. My father passed away a little more than a week ago... I wanted to play this at his funeral, but no one thought it was proper enough... so I'm using your video to post on my facebook so I can remember him in my own way.
Of all the music that was done on the Andy Griffith show this is probably the absolute best moment of all I think. I am from that part of the country on my mother's side Eastern Tn, western North Carolina. When I visit, people still talk that way back in the hills.
On one of the Mayberry reunion shows, which, you know, had all the pitfalls of being a reunion show, Andy and some of the other guys (I am pretty Don Knotts and Jim Nabors joined in) sang the alma mater for Mayberry Union High. It was sung with such heart and commitment, it's like they all actually went to high school there.
@Murdilizer hey thanks for sending this to me it IS awesome...along with making hip hop i play guitar and i even got a mandolin ive been messing around with. i might post a blues number that i recorded a while back, ill share it with you if i do.

Like someone said: We'll never get a show like this one ever again. It taught morals and we cant have that now. Can we? Awesome singing and strings in this one.
My roomate was watching andy griffith a month ago and this episode came on and I've had this song in my head ever since. Today I decided to look for it and found it, thanks to whoever posted it. I love the old man crying.
My favorite episodes were always the ones featuring the Darling family. I loved the boys' expressionless faces, and how these wacky hillbilly folk turned out to be extremely talented musicians. This song is my favorite.
hehe, im watching andy while listening to this. if my headphones behave. oh, i just discovered that you can take the headphones out to listen. lol, im blonde
I always believed Andy should have married Charlene. She was cuter than a speckled pup under a little red wagon, she sang like an angel, and was sweet as maple syrup. Besides, imagine how much fun they could have had with follow up episodes with the " in-laws " coming to town.
This song is sooo soft and soothing. I'm grateful for dvd's and YouTube so I can hear it whenever I need a lift. THANK YOU ANDY AND THANKS FOR POSTING.
I loved this show when I was a youngester & it still stands the test of time. I especially liked it when the Darlings were on--especially with Ernest T. Bass, played by the incomparable Howard Morris. The Dillards were one of the best bluegrass groups around. If they ever spoke a word on the Andy Griffith show, I don't recall. All they had to do was sit there with a straight face and do their stuff!
the music is awsome i love the banjoe and any music that it accompanies but this is stale comedy and really couldent capture a real audience anymore othger than the people who used to watch it and get those memories flushing back...not to say it wasent good when it came out but kids are doin meth and bangen eachother by 14 so...hears to an age of comedy we wont see again but wonrt soon forget

My favorite episodes were always the ones featuring the Darling family. I loved the boys' expressionless faces, and how these wacky hillbilly folk turned out to be extremely talented musicians. This song is my favorite.

There is a time when leaves are fallin'
The woods are gray the paths are old
The snow will come when geese are callin'
You need a fire against the cold
So do your roaming in the springtime
And you'll find your love in the summer sun
The frost will come and bring the harvest
And you can sleep when day is done

There is a time for love and laughter
The days will pass like summer storms
The winter wind will follow after
But there is love and love is warm
There is a time for us to wander
When time is young and so are we
The woods are greener over yonder
The path is new the world is free

I always believed Andy should have married Charlene. She was cuter than a speckled pup under a little red wagon, she sang like an angel, and was sweet as maple syrup. Besides, imagine how much fun they could have had with follow up episodes with the " in-laws " coming to town.
